FS7: Sony FS7 Battery Solutions

I wish Sony had gone with a four pin locking DC input, this one they have now looks a little weak. Maybe some one will come out with a dummy insert battery with a locking four pin in? I would like to use some good old Dionic 90's.

the XDCA-FS7 extension unit adds a 4-pin XLR dc input. It also adds a vmount, RAW out, timecode in/out, ref out, genlock, and a 12v hirose out to power an accessory. Oh, and internal ProRes HD.

4 pin Xlr connector would have meant a larger, heavier camera and more costly package. You also get a power supply for the camera, that would not be included in a camera with 4pin power...

For the target price, audience and size/weight they were going after I think it's a good compromise.

It is the same connector as the EX3 and EX1/R cams use, to me it has proven very reliable on those cameras, and I do like the location of this connector on the FS7. When you put the back extension unit on the FS7 you get the 4 pin XLR connector. But I prefer the light compact connector in compact mode, even the 90 degree XLRs are heavy and take up quite a bit of space. In thousands of hrs of use on EXcams I have never had the yellow barrel connector cause a problem.

I still use the EX3 as a shoulder cam with IDX bricks for balance, I like the ½" imager for easy on the run focus and my 14X lens is very smooth, some are not. Now with the FS7 and the new zooms I may start using this camera for R&G more than the EX3 as the images are so much better. With the FS700 shouldering was not ideal but I did use it a lot especially on fast moving boats at 240 fps but I mostly ended up cradling it.
