Sony F5 price - €14,995

Yeah... and the F55 at a max price of 19.000 euro. That's below RED prices.
I just wrote Creativ venture to find out how they can be sure of this pricing, and wether one is guaranteed to "only" pay that once Sony releases the prices.

At that price RED still can't compete even though they lowered the price IMO. I like RED and all... but this camera is so versatile on paper that it could deal with every aspect of the jobs I aim for.

I just gave 3dbroadcastsales a call to find out if the creativeventure prices are going to stick. They call back or write me as soon as possible with any info.

That leaves me wondering what the US price will be. Currently that's about $19,200. But then again cameras are usually cheaper in the US and no VAT.

I assure you that Peter will not commit to US prices at this point. Or even commit whether that European price will stick.

Yeah I'm assuming if those overseas prices are right, that means USA prices around $17K for F5 which is not bad at all... I'm hoping thats the case, I'm in RED world now, and its not bad, but post production is soooooo slow.

I would like to buy the F55 and do internal 4K to SR Codec on the SxS cards... I'd be super happy with that, and might not even use the RAW recorder until later.

Well, with due respect, Sony Professional NA probably has little to do with what Sony Europe does, other than endeavor to be on the same page as to releases, prices, etc.

My guess is that Belgian website is just posting something to get deposits.

Wild guess, f3 price goes down, this takes its slot

Doesn't sound entirely crazy.

Do you guys think $6000 USD more for F55 would be worth global shutter and 4k internal?

It would be an amazing deal, in my opinion.
- 60fps 10bit log 4K to internal, with datarates that are similar to REDCODE36... sounds great to me.
- better color filters (although let's wait for actual footage to see if they help skin tones)
- global shutter for not just image quality but also VFX (I do a lot of VFX and let me tell you that a single project shot with global shutter can save $6K in VFX labor, easy)
- better output options (aggregated 60fps 4K! 4K HDMI!)
- higher framerates for high speed shooting

So yeah, I think it will sadly be more than a $6000 price difference.

you should work in sales.

Haha, I work in marketing actually - we just did the title graphics for this trailer:

Seriously though... I have never owed a fancy camera. I spend so much time behind a computer right now that it makes sense just to rent.

But if F55 was $25K or less and its skin tone rendition is good, wow. I would really wish I could buy one.

For my projects: 1250 is enough ISO. 4K Bayer (resolving to around 3K) is enough resolution. 14 stops is enough latitude. No rolling shutter is great. 4 channels of AES digital audio is great.

I don't want > 1250 ISO because I don't want to stack huge quantities of ND.
I don't need > 3K resolved resolution because due to focus pulling or motion blur, there won't be much real detail beyond that in what I shoot.
I don't need > 14 stops of latitude (though more is nice, I admit!)
And global shutter is already the best it can be.

Sure, I would like more fps. And lighter and cheaper. But this is the first camera that I can look at and imagine still using in 5 years' time.

Epic is really close but the skin tones are ugh, the fan is too loud currently.

Anyway, let's see if they sell the F55 for $25K though. I doubt it but would love to be pleasantly surprised!

Curious about f55 fan....

In the demo video (and according to Sony), the F55 seems extremely quiet and does not overheat.

Then they attached the raw recorder and that had a large and noisy fan. Hope they fix that. But it brings some perspective into why the Epic is so loud - and makes me sadly wish for an Epic with external raw recording and internal compressed recording that was really quiet.

My 2c would be to skip the raw recorder anyway. I don't think most folks understand how close lightly-compressed 10bit LOG 4K will come to RAW in terms of grading flexibility and overall quality provided you just get white balance and ISO vaguely neutral!

But that's just me speculating without any actual tests.

Having the RAW recorder as a separate module, seems ideal to me - because when you need RAW, you can simply rent one, with high-quality 10-bit codecs for the rest of the time.

If that price is accurate its pretty stellar. Of course it will be awhile before any gets an idea of real world performance, though you could reasonably expect it to be solid.

Well I don't know how it works other places in the world, but in DK if a shop writes "max price" at something, then they are required to not ask more than that price once the product is released otherwise they would get a slap of illegal marketing and in some cases be forced by the court to let the customer buy the product at their projected max price..... I'm hoping the same rules apply in Belgium.
