Sony F35 which recorder?

Hmm. The specs here say 12G. Mind you, I have no idea if the thing will work as advertised (as it's yet to be released) but it is intriguing.

Sorry to start an off topic debate with my low quote of 5k. YES of course, we are talking about the street value of a very rare object. I consider an F35 and interface box to be a complete starter package for the F35. The buyer who bought the F35 for sub 4k bought the if box for 2 on top, bringing the price of a working F35 to around 5-6k. No the viewfinder doesn't count, truth is, there are thousands of people looking for those viewfinders, while there are only dozens looking for F35's. It's a crazy fact, but the F35 body is one of the lowest valued parts of the package. I would expect anyone to pay more for a proper F35 viewfinder than for the F35 body. So yes, it would be hard, they are not easy or redly available, I stick by my value of 5k for an F35 with Interface Box. I hope it is clear that you could do it without an interface box, just need the lemo power plug. Steal of the century was that last F35 auction, it won't happen again because there are too many people looking for it now, but if you want something enough you spend the time finding out where they all ended up. Start doing that and you'll find a deal. An F35 package with SR tape recorder, viewfinder, assistants panel, complete like the day it shipped from the factory should be 9k, and that's a deal. My value system is somewhere around: F35 body 5k, IF Box 2k, Viewfinder 3K, HDCAM Deck 1.5K, F35 CCD replacement block 2k. Of course you have to hunt, that's a low rate for any part, but that's what I think is the minimum values and how I assess if a dealer is offering a deal worth bidding . My fear, and it should be of the others here too who are looking for an F35, is that the value will drop even more, someone will realize there is more value inside the camera head if you melt it down and sell it's rare materials for raw material. Or sony will realize it is nothing but bad press, that the most expensive cinema camera of our time is paving the way for the F65 to take the same price dumb, and offer a trade-in on F35's to F55 rental houses. It wouldn't take much to take them all out forever, I think among DVXUSERS we could account for 20, maybe 30 at most.

Keith, couldn't agree more, 10-bit 422 probably looks just as good played on the big screen to it's 12-bit counter part. My real interest in 12-bit has to do with ideas in up converting to 4k. I've seen fantastic results from the 4k of the GH4 converted to 444 HD, makes me think about going the other way. Truth is, it shouldn't matter because you can't add pixels and it's just a silly 4k wrapper, unnecessary. But there is something very appealing about plugging the F35 into an Oddysey 7Q and having it read as a 4k format, mix it with FS700, C500, Blackmagic. It can be done with a computer, us a card dedicated to the up conversion not just software or transcoding and it could be realtime, but who wants to strap a computer to their F35. I know blackmagic or AJA are going to make a box that input HD and spit out 4k on the other side, then I will have all the parts for a new interface box...

Until then the Hyperdeck is incredible, fits beautifully with the F35 and follows it's rules of simplicity. I like that it is $300, I have a 2nd one in the case I never use just in case, you can do that with a $300 recorder.

Which is already very different! That's a 20% difference.

Honestly I don't agree at all. Just because somebody wants to sell a BMW for a few grand doesn't make the BMW market price a few grand. Just because some dude lucked out and got a deal on a F35 it doesn't make it the market price The market price is what it is selling for. Again, please show me a F35 selling for $5k and I will buy it now.
If you don't know of one, then this can't be considered the market price. Would you sell yours for that? Would anybody here? I don't think so.

No use in arguing about "market price". F35's go for what they go for - they're always fluctuating, although the average is certainly getting lower.
I bought mine for 7k in the end of 2012, while they were still mostly going for 10-12k. However, I soon had to pay 2k for some "unexpected" repairs, pulling the cost up to 9k. It's always a gamble.

By definition, a "market price" should be one at which the item may be readily purchased. Right now, I'd say $8k to $8.5k could fairly be considered a "market price" for an F35, considering a reputable seller is offering an F35 with viewfinder and IF box for $8.1k (or best offer) and a second seller is offering the camera and IF box for $8.9k (or best offer). A price that requires in depth research to find where one is sitting on a shelf collectng dust isn't really a "market" price, since it wasn't on the "market" before the purchaser did the digging.

Also, while F35 prices have certainly gotten insanely low, I would say at some point it is likely to level out, at least for a while - when it's essentially the same price to buy an F3 as an F35, not to mention other neglected cameras like the original Red One, people who previously couldn't choose the F35 will, as it's now in their price range, and features the build quality of a $100k+ camera, where the F3 is plastic by comparison.

Also, to the extent the price is low enough, the 20 or 30 people on DVXuser who love this camera may buy a second unit - to be used as a backup, and as a B camera. I bet if there were 5 good F35 bodies on ebay for $3k, they'd all be gone within a month.

It's very interesting the D-21 didn't get the same love the F35 did. I very nearly bought one, but it is too heavy and not sensitive enough - even by F35 standards!

D-21 is super interesting, but yeah, not as cheap, heavier, not as versatile etc.... but I really do wonder why it doesn't get the retro love that the F35 does. I've seen some beautiful things shot on the D-21.

So for the record - I was the sub $4k buyer. I got my F35 body for 3.5K - which I only did because I thought I would be crazy not to pick it up for that price. But then I had to get an IF box for another 2K. And I don't have a viewfinder, which isn't terrible, but would have been nice to get one. Now I have to machine a plate to attach a new VF which is another cost. And seeing F35 packages with a VF now for like $8K seems pretty desirable actually, even though I got mine for so cheap.

All being said. I kind of want a second F35 after now having my one haha. It's like a weird addiction. It's just so pleasingly simple of a camera, without the gotcha's of say a Blackmagic cam.

I own an O7Q and a Pix240i as well as hyper decks, ninjas, etc. They all have their uses. The pix is nice, mine works great, but I don't find it's uses really suited all that well for the F35. I think the Pix is an AMAZING match for the BMCC - where it adds beautiful audio, TC, and other things. The O7Q seems to be a better match for the f35, where we will eventually be able to take all of the possible outputs from the F35 to either DPX or ProRes to whatever flavor you want.

There are D-21s out there for the same price as the F35, probably less in reality as they are basically impossible to offload. They are probably even rarer than the 35 though

i use the Pix with the BMCC and yes it's a wonderful addition to that camera. I rarely rock my F35 with the IF box, so having the beautiful audio on the Pix (and not needing to sync later with a separate device) is lovely. The way things stand today, though, I can't see purchasing a product (O7Q) for what it eventually might do...

Based on several bad experiences I, like hunter, gave up buying (or waiting to buy) any product that I need in the short term which currently doesn't do what I need it to - regardless of when it is promised. So many things have been pushed back, or just disappeared (SR-R3 most painfully for us lot)

Having been in the VFX biz for ages, where the latest and greatest software or hardware makes all kinds of promises of Valhalla achieved, I always say-- buy the dull side of the bleeding edge knife. Let somebody else do all the bleeding while promises are (or are not) fulfilled, bugs are squashed and features are settled. Same knife, less blood.

That's how I feel too. How long has CD been promising the upgrade for the 7Q that will allow the 12 bit 444 recording for example?
