Sony F35 frame grabs and camera settings

I hope starting a separate thread is appropriate, but I thought it would be great to have a section with frame grabs of the looks we getting with certain settings or grades.

First up, low light.
I had an issue where the band I was shooting arrived on set so freakin late we had to turn it into a night shoot.
Thankfully I had 2 x LS 1000W LED panels with me. But that's all I had.

As we have learned -and Alister Chapmen put it nicely- You don't need all 12-13 stops of the DR if your scene has less than that.
So having "extended" range on in a low contrast scene is just gonna introduce unnecessary noise and the camera will allocate less bits per stop to your bit bucket.

Here's some grabs (click for full res):

Those shots on the rooftop are veeery filmlike! Congrats.

It would be interesting to do a few tests to see what you lose when switching to Drange normal regarding Tstops and noise floor.

Thanks Miguel.

Yes, it would be interesting.
Even when I've tried Drange normal in high contrast scenes, the highlights do still retain reasonable detail, and roll off gracefully, and shadows difference is minimal, but shadow area is a lot cleaner.
Definitley an overall cleaner image in "normal" range.
Heck, we dithering down DR when we grade for rec709 anyway, does it matter if we losing a little DR in "normal" setting to begin with?

Looks great! I have been sleeping…where can I find those LUT's. I have a shoot coming up on Monday outside (in the snow) with lots of action.
Might have to shoot the F35 and Odyssey to see what I can get…it would be prudent in avoiding CMOS jello.

What glass were you using?

Nice shots Jusgorilla...

Just off topic, I came across a F35 with Nikon mount for sale in Johannesburg. Must be one of us. I 1st thought of you, but seeing this post... lol no way I'd get rid of a camera that produces images like these :) not that's it's the camera that matters that most though ;)

Umm… it was me :embarasse, just had this crazy stupid idea after a heavy 4 day shoot that its too heavy and slow for me, but as always, once I see the footage, I just can't let it go. and my wife will kill me if i sell it, she absolutely LOVES the F35 :violent5:

Great shots, Justin! Looking forward to seeing the finished piece!
Could you perhaps do a little write-up on your experiences with the Osiris-luts in the F35 color grading thread? Are they an alternative to Film Convert, or a whole other concept?

There are a few roads to film print emulation, Luts in resolve are just one way, film convert is another, that adds more options like film grain, which Luts don't.
I'll definitly share my experiences over in the grading section.

Good good, I for a second secretly feared the camera was going out of fashion soon lol

looks incredible, the rooftop shots are very well done!

EDIT: the indoor shots are very well done as well, but the clouds in the background and the overall look outdoors looks insane. screams cinema :)

With the workflow on the LUTs... In Resolve 10 Lite, i do not have an option for a 3D input LUT. I can add the stages you listed to Nodes, and stack them accordingly, but i only have 1D input nodes and only the option for a 3D output. What are you referencing with regards to a 3D input LUT?

Awesome shots by the way.... i have the Osiris LUTS and just started playing with them

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is a gorgeous film! Ceylan, the director, also happens to be the perhaps single most prominent Turkish filmmaker. His films are well worth a watch!

Could someone perhaps upload some uncompressed stills showing 10-bit 4:2:2 vs 12-bit 4:4:4? Maybe both ungraded and corrected?
