Hi Guys,
2 stills from our unscientific comparison of the two beauties....
One time Highlight-protected (100%), second a workable exposure..
Same lens (Samyang 85mm), internal codecs, no LUT
enjoy!

Sorry Douglas,
but in this perspective i think what counts is what you get right out of the camera. and this pic is to illustrate that the f3 has 2 stops more DR.
who grades it, and how is something totally different and comes to the ability of the colorist - and that's not why we made this pic ;-)
i worked on amazing 7D commercials for hi class clients.
as always - new cameras with higher DR give you more room to play with,
but don't change the "soul" of your project....

cheers
stefan

To my eyes I personally like the c300 image better. Not denying the fact of the F3 advantage, I just really love that Canon look.

Red Epic Vs Sony PMW-F3 Vs Canon C300

The goal of this test is to compare the latitude of these three cameras:
Red Epic, Sony PMW-F3 and Canon C300.

Red Epic recorded RAW on-board in Red Log 4K HD.
Sony PMW-F3 recorded in S-Log both in DPX on Gemini 4:4:4 10 bit and on-board.
Canon C300 recorded in Canon-Log both in DPX on Gemini 4:2:2 8 bit and on-board.

There are four tests:
1) Diffused light, from +3 stops to -5 stops.
2) Varying exposure in relation to indoor, outdoor and medium light.
3) Diffused light at 0 + spot light from 0 to +3 1/2 stops.
4) Sensors' quality test with charts.

You can download the Pro Res HQ video here: http://www.adcom.it/Testcomparativo/
The file is huge, about 22 GB, so it's divided in 31 parts.

I will upload the H.264 version as soon as possible.

Enjoy!

The F3 wins in the highligts (now there's a new firmware update for the Epic for a better latitude) and in color rendition.
Test charts:

1) Epic
2) F3
3) C300

They may only be 2 stops... but its a world of difference....

To my eyes I personally like the c300 image better. Not denying the fact of the F3 advantage, I just really love that Canon look.

these two pretty much sum it all up. Both cameras look great, and once graded you won´t see much difference.
To me the F3 doesn´t seem to be as accurate in color-rendition as the Canon. E.g. the sky is green-tinted, but it was blue.
TheC-log on the other hand has a bit too much saturation for a LOG and the Canon clearly has problems with the highlights in the window, compared to the F3. So that is something to be aware of when using the C300.

filippo, what an extensive test! thanks for that.

My 2 cents after watching these two test (and being part on one of them):
Red needs to be exposed spot on. This package really doesn#t like to be pushed in any direction.

F3 has an amazingDR and you can easily overexpose by 2 stops . With the 4:4:4 output it is a very flexible camera.
C300 is the best bang for the buck and a great stand-alone camera. It is better not to overexpose too much and it misses 2 stops to the F3 in any case. But with the 4:2:2 onboard and the superior EVF/LCD, stabilized lenses and its size is perfect for docs, while the other two are huge packages that will give better results in controlled environments.

wow, what a test...!
thanx for that!
wonderful cameras, all of them. but still it's getting harder to justify the higher price point of the red cameras - especially for people not exclusively in the film business...
red's sensor will get an update soon. i think that they have to to keep the top position.
and before everybody goes shouting again: yes, 4k is better than 1080p - but for film, not for 95% of my work.
i for one need to have a quick workflow. (Dear Sony, where's my ingest plugin for FCPX????)
