F3: Sony F3 Resurrection - The New Chapter

This was footage from the archives, I am shooting 10-bit on the F55 and it does render highlights nicer plus give a bit more room in the grade. But a lot is possible with 8-bit depending how it's shot and how well the lighting is controlled.

I'm on the fence for an R5 to go along the F55. More disk space, more storage,...

I know, I shoot some RED stuff regularly and have some nice RED footage I've shot in my archives. The R5 & media, etc.. is just another $10k I don't have. :embarasse

Nice work Sam. I like the highlights on the nose.

Did you try workflow outlined in this thread, or something else/new?

Cheers,

You probably know that I find Log wooden.

Basically the flat curve lacks contrast and saturation.

So go into Resolve and ramp up the contrast and saturation!

But this crushes ones DR - basically the tops and bottoms clip.

So, lets work out a way of letting the tops and bottoms through that harsh primary grade and bring em back into vision.

Layer nodes is my thing of the day.

Get the primary grade and add two layer nodes, highs, lows.

Qualify each layer node, for example the high qualifier might slide in between soft 70-80 through 100 IRE

This 'lets through' those high values past that harsh contrast primary.

Same process on the bottoms.

Subtle slide of the qualifier position rolls the tops and bottoms, and allows you to colour/contrast/control them too.

That is this weeks method anyway!

One thing Im noticing is that these files Ive been shooting don't have much latitude (bend in post). Im going to need a way of nailing my skins to a very close value, ideally while not blowing anything but the specular highs.

I dont have a WFM but hope the yellow 50-55 zone on my SmallHD might be of help - either hit the skins in that or just below it.. not sure which yet.

Both of these scenes are designed to look unlit, in-fact they had some gelled 800s bouncing around.

I was just fooling with seeing how they upscaled - the second one I forgot to sharpen so it did not upscale so well.

You want me to upload an untouched frame? How do I do that?

blacks are really crushed...and skin tones are too orangish...for an ambient lighting natural look with bright windows maybe something like this:

thanks! photoshop...
some simple adjustment layers, brightness and contrast, curves, vibrance and a smart sharpen

Photoshop is great for creating targets but mine is done in resolve with no secondaries - that is a slightly different challenge!

I'm trying to make a "pastable" workflow in Resolve..

Am I missing something here. Although these these pics look fine enough, I'm surprised that people posting test shots here for color correcting Slog aren't using shots that are more complex, and have a wide range of exposure and color. Getting a face to look nice tells me very little about how any method will work for a rich wide shot with windows and interest in both highlights and shadows. Same for the guy in the car on the first page of this thread., though that was more complex shot.
