F3: Sony F3 Convergent Design Odyssey 7 (not Q) 60P slomo

Sony F3 & CDO7 1st impressions:
Impressive monitor - Tools are outstanding

CD O7 FW - 2.11.110
Note: My unit shipped with FW 2.10 from BH, it also reports a record of recording 6 clips - Dunno what that's about - Testing from CD?
...updating the FW update was simple but I could not easily find any info on how to do it. After downloading the Odyssey_2.11.110.zip *MAC OS 10.5.8* and uncompressing revealed the
Odyssey2.11.110 folder - inside is the }ODYSSEY_UPDATE{ folder, simply drag this to the SSD and it auto detects the FW.

Recording from Sony F3 with CBK-RGB01:
The main goal here was 1080 60P (slomo) from the "A" port on the F3.
Setting the F3 to -System- 1920 59.94
Dual Link "A" port - 3G YPbPR422 & S Log (3G RGB444 does not work at all)

OD7 Auto detects 59.94 - records to a single SSD and plays back in the monitor as 60p slo-mo
however, using FCP7, reports the file is not optimized for Final Cut Pro - and plays back as realtime
Using Cinema Tools I was able to conform to 23.98 and it plays back as slo-mo fine.
There are some notes from CD regarding the optimization but I thought it only was for FCP X.

Note:
When I returned the F3 system to 29.97 or 23.98 I had to set the output of the "A" port to
1.5G YPbPR422 & S Log. When enabling the F3 LUT it is contrast only and similar to what is already
in camera. But, it passes that LUT through it's output, not affecting the recording.

Summary:
The Owner/Operators that work in my market all purchased 7Q's, I waited for the 7 as I do not
need an A/B switch to monitor 2 cameras, 4K etc.
I currently us a PIX 240 as the recorder and it accepts 3G RGB444 & records
all flavors of ProRes & DNX. I needed to replace an aging Marshall monitor and with the OD7
I got a 1080 60P spiff. I configured it t with the new Wooden Camera monitor cage, IDX plate
and power it with Sony BP60's which run it for aprox 4 hrs.

Its a good combo for sure... Just recently finished 13 days shooting 2x F3/Odyssey 7q's and the setup worked like a dream. The odyssey is the best recorder/monitor out there. It worked seamlessly in 25p/60p 422hq the entire shoot. The guys at CD are making the F3 a relevant camera even in 2014.

My problem with the Odyssey 7Q us that it is just bloody huge and that shows in the above picture.
Not an ergonmic solution at all.
And that battery at the back would definitely increase the weight considerably making the rig front heavy.
When is someone gonna make an EVF/recorder solution?
Even an eyepiece on a 5" monitor would be acceptable...

Yoclay, I totally agree on the size... big fan of proper ergonomics as well. Ideally something in the 4/5in range would be great but the odyssey is much lighter than it looks and the monitor with battery is maybe 1.5lbs? How much different would a TV logic 5.6 with sony battery be weight wise? The rig above in its current form is not front heavy at all... however with a larger prime or zoom it definitely is. The majority of our shoot was on sticks or easyrig and in that environment the odyssey was more than ideal.

UPDATE:
Firmware: 3.10.100 OCT2014
Now you can setup the Project Rate: from 23:98 to 60p
With the F3 set to 29.97 (or 23:98) F3 owners that do not have CBK-RGB01 upgrade can simply use the HD SDI out and record slo-mo from that port.
Just brilliant!
Recording Real Time & Slo_mo at the same time is just to cool.

So you are saying that without the upgrade I can shoot 60p with the F3?
This is great news to me, as I never purchased it.
If I understand correctly what you are saying is that there is a "project rate" in the menu on the 7/7Q and the user defines it for a specific (albeit lesser) output.
If the camera is then placed on that output the 7/7Q in fact takes over and produces the higher rate on the recorder?
Is this only in Prores422HQ or also 444 ?

By the way can I do an anamorphic desqueeze on this monitor? (1.5x)

well Yoclay we've had this conversation between us and you know I agree with you wholeheartedly in regards to the size of some components and having to strap even more stuff onto a camera rig so it resembles a damn Christmas tree with a lens buried somewhere in the wiring and kit. This is why I too bought up the plea for an EVF/Recorder. Something not too far beyond present technology I'd have thought, though Mitch wasn't sure of it's practicality or viability financially for a manufacturer.
Then I read this week that the new Zacuto EVF uses a screen that's around 1" and yet has higher resolution that anything out there at this time, so surely if the screens can be miniaturised and still function to a high degree, how hard would it be to make a smaller record option in an EVF. I think it will come, but when?
By the way, here's the loupe I adapted for my PIX. Still a lump on the camera rig, but better than hanging the PIX, plus EVF and a Big Gulp cup holder too.

Does the Odyssey accept 3G YPbPR422 from the A port in 3G with the paid upgrade to the F3 to use this port as the monitor and recorder of 60p? Do you know if the Odyssey 7q also can do this (the chart on their site seems to indicate only the 7 can do this)?

Thanks for the info

They can both do it.

How does that work shutter wise? Do you end up with a 360 degree shutter on the 60p material?
