SONY CLM-V55 Portable Monitor is available at B&H

Yes, I also saw that lower price during one day in Amazon.

A question to whoever has already acquired it or had a chance to try it: how would it compare -in actual operation and resolution- to the Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor? I know they are both same size and HDMI only. Their prices differ, but for the Sony batteries, AC adaptors and charger have to be added, whilst the Marshall's price is 516 at B&H, and it functions with AA rechargeable batteries.

I am actually watching both monitors in order to take my decision towards a field small monitor. Can anyone please help me? Thanks so much.
Ana.

I have ordered one of these and it should be here today or tomorrow. I have no way to compare it to the Marshall unit, but I would be happy to describe how well it works for my purposes, which mainly are focussing for macro with non-autofocus lenses.

The little bit that I have heard online about the CLM-V55 is that it presents a sharp, non-pixellated image with useful peaking and 2x magnification functions.

Your review and opinion will surely be very helpful, mcsadapted. I hope it reaches you soon.

What I have read -on a comparison basis- is an article on the Marshall 5" unit with regards to the 5.6 SmallHD, by Philip Bloom, in London. So your appreciations will add up a good input to the general background (concerning focussing as well as colour quality and overall view and functioning).

Thanks and good luck.
Ana.

I would be very interested in a comparison between this and the Marshall. The Marshall has false color, of course, to show clipping.

I was able to get 3:11 out of a single battery while playing Avatar on it and it still had more in it. The power light was blinking but I didn't have the time to keep testing it. I'll try again this week.

I dont have a marshal nor a camera to test it with yet. Still waiting for my GH2 but I have this monitor and it looks GREAT. I put Avatar on it to test it and it looks amazing. ---.........................
Anything I can test whilst playing a BR into it that you guys need tested?

Thanks for offering your help, terabyte. There are a couple of things that I would like to know but I wonder if you already got yuor GH2 or you have any other HDSLR HDMI camera at hand. If so:

- Is it possible to watch the focused picture in the camera LCD screen at the same time that in the external monitor?
- How much bigger (in actual terms, not in terms of the 5 inches diagonally that this monitor has) is the pictura played during monitoring, recording or playing back compared to that of the LCD camera screen. Perhaps around an inch bigger that the camera? I ask you because in pictures you can find in the web, you can see a lot of "black" framing the actual image, and being not covered by the image itself.

These are my basical two questions. Thanks so much if you can give a reply to them. And if you can not, equally grateful.

The on board GH2 LCD will stay on while outputting via HDMI. Every once and awhile it would give me some problems by randomly going to sleep, but I'd just give the cam a quick off/on treatment and it would pop back on.

As far as I remember the GH2 played full frame in the monitor, alot of the stuff you will see online is from the Canon cameras which you have to hit the info button twice to get it to pop up to full frame...otherwise you just see black bars with a smaller image.

Hey Everyone,

This might have been covered before, but I noticed that this Sony LCD lets you monitor audio through a headphone jack. Does the GH2 output audio through it's HDMI? Would this be a way to monitor audio recording to the GH2?

Thanks,
Andy

I never bothered to check, but I've still got my GH2 for a bit and I can test it out to see. My guess would be that it doesn't, but I could be wrong.

Hey Rob,

I was about to pm you about that. I would think that if it did allow audio monitoring it would be something people would be talking about, but I haven't seen any posts about it. That would be great if you could give it a try while you still have it. I would think the HDMI would output video and audio that was the major point of HDMI as a standard.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks,
Andy

No problem, I'll give it a quick look tonite! I'm at work at the moment where we have a 5D and a CLM-V55, so I can check now and see if it works with that. Though do we have any reason to believe the 5D/GH2 HDMI out's would work in the same fashion.

Live audio monitoring while recording? Wow, I would think this would be a fairly big deal for some DSLR shooters, but I guess people are used to 2 system recording now?

Hopefully, the GH2 will work as well.

Thanks for the testing.
