Sony Cinema Line & FX6

Does clear zoom work on peoples' faces? Seems simple "AI" upscaling is not great at that yet.

Searching for info about the new Mac mini's I stumbled upon Andrew Reid's EOSHD site, and wow, was he always so negative? It isn't so much what he is saying, but how he is saying it. And I thought I was critical of cameras.

Anyways, he pans the Fx6 as a Sony ploy to get us to buy more eMount glass..... but that is the autofocus game, unfortunately. The only thing I agree, is I wish it had an anamorphic crop. Maybe not a full frame anamorphic crop, as cool as that might be, FF35 anamorphic glasswork is just too rare, but Anamorphic 4perf is about the same frame height as the Fx6's 10MP frame, so it would just be a center crop and desqueeze, nothing too crazy. Would mojo up that overly clean Sony look.

Time to settle in for the weekend. this place always clears out on the weekends. And oddly from 1-4pm Pacific Time. I haven't figured that one out yet. Till next week!

BTW, another consideration is to evaluate how AF behaves in the clear zoom mode. Even the gyro IS. Sony disables various functions in certain hardware states.

It's possible face-tracking or object tracking (or other modes) are disabled in clear zoom...if you care about AF.

At least on the a7siii, it seems like only wide area AF is available in clear image zoom. No other AF.

But if he's talking about using an S35 zoom, it probably doesn't have AF anyway...unless it's the Sony 18-110

But certainly, I'd want to test the clear image zoom if i were sodotoguwangus and make sure I was happy with the look. It may work better on static than on moving shots for example. I do not know

Haha! He's always sounded very entitled about cameras. (Like, "stupid canon needs to add x y and z futuristic features or their brand will die") but I think he has gotten more nasty and negative hot take in his tone as the era of clickbait and twitter has progressed. 5 or 10 years ago, I didnt yet have the feeling that I wouldn't want to run afoul of him. He's probably more pleasant in person, who knows

I'm not sure which lenses he has in mind, but there's a good handful of S35 zooms...mostly those super zooms you like but also a couple of more expensive ones like the 16-55mm f/2.8 (nice lens).

Let's get one thing straight - I am not a super-zoom-liker. Just a super-zoom-tolerator for when the occasion calls. (There is a remarkable difference, for example, in how the 28-135 holds balance on my gimbal across the zoom range as compared to my sigma 24-70 which is back heavy and then front heavy if you balanced it in the middle. But the sigma looks better.) and for tomorrow's shoot, I've got an 18 balanced on there right now. It's an open question if the 28-135 will take its maiden voyage later on in the shoot or if it'll be 18 all day

But yeah I thought he mentioned S35 zooms, but I see now he just mentioned non-full-frame glass, and you're right that there are tons of APS-C AF lenses for sony

Agreed, Idk why he loves Super Zooms. I am more of a Prime guy myself. Super Zooms are not good for cinematic art.

Just noted on Ali Chaps blog a 9 vs 6 chart.

6 misses cache record - to me this matters (not that it worked properly on the FS7)

6 misses some form of connectivity - this doesnt mattr to me now.

-----------
The bunny shot.
So you align your camera at the top of a rabbit hole and after two hours the rabbit pokes it head out and examines the day. If you dont get the head popping out moment you miss the shot. Your choices are; role for 2 hours or use cache record. I know its a silly example but its why I think cache record matters. Having a (front) tail with audio also hugely helps an edit.

Out of curiosity, are there external recorders that do cache record?

I was thinking the same - I dont think so or not in the atomos (cheap) class

Actually it looks like you do but you only get 2-3 seconds!

"Pre roll or cache record allows for a short recording time to be captured continuously prior to pressing the record button (approximately 8 seconds in HD and 2-3 seconds in 4K being cached into memory). This option is enabled from the input menu under Record section and is available on the Shogun/Ninja Assassin/Flame and Inferno series. To flag that pre roll is activated, you will see a white circular arrow around the record button and a red Pre Roll icon will flash in the top left hand corner. The frame rate and codec selected will affect the number of seconds being cached for pre roll. Using a lower bit rate codec setting and shooting at lower frame rate will increase the length of pre-roll"

Its not just wildlife, you could be hanging out with a politician who starts going on about grabbing pussy, race car crashes, many many situations.

Its the same with primes/zooms - none of us like zooms but know they are needed when doing real live jobs.

Wedding
Car arrives - wide scenic (24FF)
Bride exits car - 135FF (ideally S+Q)
Run into church disengage ND (no messing with screw on filters)
135 on door - bride enters
24 wide scenic as bride walks up aisle

You can do this live sequence without a zoom and proper ND
