Sony A7SIII = $3500, 10-bit 4K120p internal, 16-bit 4K60p RAW out

That makes a lot of sense re:b-roll.

Sonyalpharumors now reporting that the A7SIII has no heat limits and can recording without a cutoff. New 12MP stacked sensor with fast readout. And it will be called the "A7SIII"

I understand the photo first video second people who are still interested in the R5. But as a video first and photo very much second person, I'm basically ready to preorder the A7SIII based on rumors lol.

It's no longer about 8K vs not 8K. Now it's about a camera that overheats vs one that doesn't.

And that will very likely factor into general perceptions/reputation about the R5.

I’d file this under ‘specialty/special use case’.(you get an exemption ; ) ) I think most of us are referring to more generalized work.

Yes we're referring to more generalized work - but I wouldn't mind having a camera that can cover these special cases. I shoot the odd table top, the odd music video, the odd sports thing, the odd time I could use super slow-mo. The centerpiece of my reel is a dancer in haute couture dresses jumping in slow mo on a trampoline. Shot on a 7D in 30p and twixtored. I so wish that was shot at 240p.

Any indication of rolling shutter and scan speed on the Sony? Because I have a feeling the Canons aren't going to be good in that department.
Amazing how in our business we keep moving one step forward, three steps back. A lot of issues to get a sales oriented but close to useless in
the real world 8K mirrorless.

The more I shoot with the Fuji X-T3, the more I like it. FF isn't or really shouldn't be a sales factor in video. The Fuji colors
are excellent as is the sharpness and detail. it shoots DCI or UHD 10-bit at up to 400 Mbps. The eye detection and AF are MUCH improved after the 3.0 FW update
(not as good as Sony and Canon granted, but better than Panasonic, BMD) I just picked up two VERY lightly used/barely used Silver ones off of
Amazon for $900.00 ea. Makes spending $3k-$4k feel like possibly not the smartest move in the Pandemic/Quarantine working environment.

Battery life is too short, micro HDMI and involuntary exposure ramping on zooming XF zooms so they are far from perfect. But they are so inexpensive compared
to whatever the A7 SIII or the Canon R5 or R6 sell for, I got two of them for less than what even the R6 will cost. Guess I am just cheap? ;-) It's such a great camera
for so little money.

I think the Fujis look great. But I want the Sony/canon autofocus, the FF low-light, and I want to pair my FF lenses with a FF sensor. (Which, it's true, I could do with a speedbooster on the Fuji). Also supposedly fuji is 4:2:0 not 4:2:2, although I care more about 10-bit

It's funny - one of my wedding companies sent out a message last year that they would no longer accept Fuji cameras, and they gave us a list of canon/Sony/panny cameras they'd accept. they told me that fuji is too noisy in low-light. And I thought, "but you accept the gh5!!!!" They probably have only one guy who got a Fuji and shot it with a slow lens and they came to the conclusion that Fuji is noisy lol

The A7SIII is supposedly a 12MP stacked sensor that can record 4K 120p - which suggests it has great rolling shutter. Now - maybe it has a higher bit-depth readout for lower framerates, so maybe the RS is worse in 4k 24p. But I think it's all going to be fine since the sensor is only 12MP. Supposedly the A7SII rolling shutter was 20ms and I imagine the A7SIII will improve on that

Does anyone see Sony providing full-frame 4K/60p to anything lower than the FX9? I don't know.

Canon did but with question marks. Maybe those question marks here would be a slight crop or 4K/60p 8-bit.

This is what the rumor says: records FHD 240fps, 4k120fps 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K120fps raw over HDMI. It can't crop and give 4K because it's only a 12MP sensor. Ok, maybe a 1.1x crop

It's unclear from that if 4k120 10-bit must be recorded over HDMI (and I'm not sure there's a recorder to handle that stream continuously)

Perhaps they consider a 12MP sensor without eND, XLRs, shoulder-mount and offset-EVF form factor to be enough of a cripple vs the FX9. Or maybe the codec is long-GOP or at least on the small side

Canon basically delivered it...it just can't take the heat. The only issue with canon is the high-speed stuff is pixel-binned. Can't do that with a 12MP sensor

It MUST have 4K 60p 10-bit internal. If it's only long-GOP I'll still buy it (I bought an S1 after all)

Plus it sounds like we get RAW out...

Looks great, but when that guy is certain about something he makes it pretty clear as he's pretty dramatic about being correct, and that post regarding those specs doesn't sound very convincing (everything but its name and no limits).

If it has <1.1x crop 4k 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 with a semi-decent bitrate and AF at least as good as the A7III...I'll take it

Then which E-mount glass? 24-105mm for your basic coverage and a fast prime or two? $$$

Yes exactly - I'm thinking Sony 24-105 + Samyang 45mm f/1.8. About $1400 for the 2 of them. Could make do without the 45 but then miss the joy of nailing really shallow DOF focus pulling...

But it's true that lens costs push the package cost up for me. Hopefully the body will be $3k and then the cost relative to an R5 is pretty darn similar with the lenses

The R6 is still in the back of my mind if it doesn't overheat because it would be cheaper...

I would look into the new Tamron 28-200mm zoom. It's getting uniformly rave reviews everywhere. Dustin Abbott's review on Youtube is especially good.

I think I'd sooner get the sony 24-240 for wider wide angle and longer telephoto. It seems like they're marketing the tamron for its max aperture? Yawn. But I'll probably get neither since I basically just want something for gimbal use (generally and also maybe in low-light). I don't see myself going to 200 on a gimbal. I have a canon 70-200 that I can use for telephoto stuff - won't get the great AF in that case but whatever. I'm not going to buy a whole new set of lenses because $$$

I have a bad feeling about the auto focus on SIII. SI had a poor one. SII had a poor one. By this point, the Cigarette Smoking Man wants proof.

Dude. Come on.

10+ Sony cameras were released after the a7SII, which have perfect AF.

The $800 ZV-1 even has it.

AF is staying. You limit the rest through crops, depths or rates.

The a7sii is contrast detect no? As long as the A7SIII has phase detect, I'm not concerned. If they give it contrast detect, I will buy a tin hat from DLD

Dude. Come on.

Yup. And they all have different sensors. If Sony's reusing the old 12 MPX S/SII sensor, it might not have it.

In fact, bringing 12 MPX back is absurd in the era when the BMD and Z-cams are 6K/8K. Yet, to quote David Coverdale, here we go again.

Disclaimer - the Cigarette Smoking Man wants proof. That's all. He knows all about product crippling from reliable sources, aka history. And to quote Shirley Bassey, this can be the case of history repeating. Like this "...".

LOL. Wouldn't that be the ultimate knockout...I would have tears in my eyes.

Provide you absolutely everything you could want, but casually and unexpectedly limit your best feature.

I don't buy that 12mp sensor rumor AT ALL.

Sony has been marketing "oversampled 4K" for pretty much every camera (video and DSLR) they've released for years. They will want to market this one as oversampled too.

The quad bayer sensor that we've already seen specs for makes so much more sense - the IMX521CQR or some variant thereof.

It'll be a 4.8K quad bayer sensor with HDR readout (similar to Alexa and Canon C300 mk3), plus a bonus 61mp stills mode.

Also notice that it is "only" 4.8K so they can claim that this is somehow lower-end than their 6K sensor video cameras (Venice, FX9 etc). The pixels will be higher quality though!

Probably it will have 4.8K RAW output maybe even RAW in high speed mode. Not sure if they will have to do a little bit of line skipping to get 120fps raw or not, we'll see.

It'll have great phase detect autofocus, and they will announce new cinema zoom lenses (the ones they've already teased) which work great with it in both manual and auto modes.

Looking into the future, I wonder if they will go quad-bayer for a Venice and FX9 successors too... maybe up the res a bit so they can do a 6K quad bayer HDR binned mode (that can do either 6K RAW or great oversampled 4K). It could have the bonus of also doing a 12K native mode that makes for "oversampled" 8K or whatever :)

That would make me very happy and make a lot of sense.

That particular sensor maxes out at like 90fps 4K and 180fps HD. That wouldn't jibe with other rumors. Could be a different sensor though.

If we get into high-resolution quad Bayer sensors, we will need to worry about rolling shutter speed. They claim there are no overheating or artificial time limits.

Usually the rumors site is quite accurate this close to release (assuming it actually gets released this month). But I could believe that it's 12MP after the quad Bayer downscale. Although I don't know why they wouldn't hype it as a 48MP sensor.
