Sony A7S vs Sony F35 - the big vs the small.

The smallest s log camera Sony makes - the Sony A7S - I just bought it - again because MacGregor was interested in it . He is my cult leader.

So I'm going to test the smallest s log camera with the biggest and see how they cut together.

I got the Sony A7s to be my small camera - to replace the black magic pocket camera. But if its amazing I will use it a lot when I want some small camera fluid dancing like movement. We'll see. Get it Tuesday.

Fluid dancing like movement? There is too much rolling shutter for that.
I would definitely rethink that strategy if this is the reason you have purchased it.

yes I agree, the F35 is awesome to just pick up the camera and run around with, not something I have found with any other smaller camera besides film. I am so tired of footage with the "micro shakes" or those really wierd warps that people do in post to correct the shakes and rolling shutter. The F35 is not the most practical camera to grab and run around, and yet it does it the best.

I'm not trying to dump on your comparison, it would be cool to see how sony's tech 10 years later for the masses compares to the ultra high end of the past. I've dreamed of a smaller camera to compliment my F35, something for the POV rigs and gimbals and all the benifits that come from a smaller camera head. At this point the Ikonoskop and the Digital Bolex are the two smaller cameras I've considered to compliment the excellent motion of the F35.

Personally I feel there's something to be said for the last generation of high-end cameras (F35, D-21). I'm currently reading up on the F65 and there is a lot missing from it that the F35 has, interesting to see what has been cut too. There is a reason these things were twice the price of their current models.

No fans, an optical viewfinder (okay, you get that in the studio, but not the base model), the 4x3 sensor (same), etc.... The ALEXA is definitely an improvement in nearly all ways, but there is still something nice about these old beasts. They do remind me much more of film cameras than the newer ones.

Unfortunately what I'm seeing from the a7s, while technically superb, does not look very cinematic. Similar to what happens with the f3. Or the reds. Or so many others.

Well that just sucks.

For a camera the size of an iPhone that does the same thing as an F3 or a red - I wouldn't necessarily use the word "sucks"....

It would have been nice if they tapped into the F35 mojo for the A7s, but I didn't really expect it and not really what I want to use it for.

On another note - I just shot a bunch of F35/Epic this weekend for a doc and the IQ/noise/color of the F35 is still an amazing thing. You wouldn't believe how noisy the epic is in some situations. F35 definitely looks more resolute at 1080p as well.

I did too. It's sitting here in front of me. Ditched the GH4 for it. Now I'm not totally sure if that was the smartest decision.

I really liked a lot of the BMPC 4K stuff I've seen, but I'm not sure I want / can go down that route.

I do have to say that I suffer from the "one camera" line of thinking. maybe I need to free myself and have two.

the rolling shutter is definitely a mess. but its color and low light ability and full frame makes it a nice camera - but i don't know how good it would be on rigs. Gotta test this asap.

Thats what I'm seeing too- still has the dslr video look even with slog - 8-bit isn't helping either. But hey, its a cheap camera and is great it lowlight I'm sure it would come in handy. I wouldn't mind owning one.
