Sony a7III

The 120p is not cropped on the a7RIII and looks cleaner than the a6300/a6500 (which was bad IMO), so I'm hoping it's the same.

So Panasonic is doing it for a while and Sony still isn't? How desperate are they to protect the FS7 and Co.?

GH4 is a tiny MFT sensor, so they had to put more features on it to compete with other FF body.
Honestly I used GH4, the DR did suck :(

Highly doubt the a7SIII will have 10bit internal though... :(
All we can do is just hope dreams comes true.

Sure would like to see a low light shootout between the Sony A7 III and the GH5S. The GH5S, based upon my hands-on so far, is really good to ISO 6400, but past that, the NR is working so hard that things start to look weird.

I would also like to see them compared to the the a7sii for a usable max iso setting in very low light. Like a persons face in a dark alley.

Yes I had forgotten the GH5 is a small sensor. But I'm not even talking internal 10bit. External would already help. For people who use Sony larger cameras a GH5 as a second camera is just a hassle, regardless of how great it might be. Sony needs to get on with the times. External 10bit 422 will not steal any sales from the FS5 or FS7. This was one of the reasons I got out of the Sony game for my main cameras. I got sick of the corporate thing and the cold shoulder.

I like the direction Sony is taking in terms of camera technology and improvements, however
IMO Sony's menu system is a disaster and a throw back to the 1990's, and something that actually puts me off
investing in their cameras. It is just too cumbersome!

They have failed to tackle this over numerous upgrades to the camera.
Compared to Panasonics Touchscreen Menu system it is years behind
(Panasonics menu is by no means perfect but the difference IMO is night and day)

I find it hard to understand how a company with Sony's experience in
interfaces and technology cant get this area of their camera design right.

Thier a7 and professional cameras are crying out for an articulating touchscreen
like the GH5/s and an interface like the Hasselblad HD6

Sony's menus are absolutely horrific. I picked up an A6500 for underwater stills (and for silent BTS shots when I'm on set). And it's easily my biggest gripe with an otherwise incredibly powerful little camera - the menus just make it a very complicated camera to operate.

I was they'd take a page out of Nikon's book for menu structure (which still remains the gold standard for user friendliness in my mind - better than Canon, Fuji and most especially Sony at the very least).

I think if I had only around $6000 to spend to get everything I needed to make videos. I'd get this camera with:

Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens
Sony XLR-K1M Audio unit
Sennheiser AVX Lav
Sachtler ACE Tripod
3 batteries
Variable ND Filter
Bi-colour LED light panel

There aren't many situations that it wouldn't work for. And I don't even like the Sony look that much. But this looks to be a great camera combining the best aspects of the A6500 and A7SII, both of which I own.

Sony comes out with a brand new camera doing 4K and HDR and it is still 8-bit?

Pinch me and tell me we are not living in 2015!

They definitely are. Thankfully, you can configure a lot of stuff in the camera in terms of personalized menus and buttons, and once I've done that I hardly ever need to go into the menus. I just wish they added crop, video resolution and video fps to the Fn menu, then I'd just go to the regular menu when I have to format the card.

Already a #1 seller at B&H within 24 hours of preorders opening up (started at 11am yesterday).

...here's what I'd like to know about video on the a7 III:
- Does eye-detect AF work in 4k video mode?...

I don't think eye detect AF works in video mode on any A-series camera, including the A7RIII and A7III. If those did work it would be a huge feature. However on my A7RIII, face registration AF seems to work if I register the face in photo mode then switch to video mode. I've never seen that documented and I just discovered it.

It seems like Sony could make eye detect AF work in video mode, but if they can't even make auto ISO display the current value when in video mode, maybe it's harder than it seems. Maybe the A7SIII will have eye detect AF in video mode, and maybe they'll eventually figure out how to display the current auto ISO value in video mode.

In theory, the software should be available in video mode, but I imagine the implementation is more difficult. Having a lens keep up its focus when the camera is moving around at say f/1.4 and it simply locks on an eye would be so crazy.

We're not that far away from that though as Canon's DPAF pretty much locks on a face perfectly in most cases (at least with the DSLRs). But an eye...and having an accurate & consistent lock...that's on another level.

This is already accomplished at f/1.4 as shown at 03:40 in this video about the Sony A7III. The limitation is photo mode only not video mode (yet) : https://youtu.be/-9Lz0_uxpDc?t=221

Yes, it seems eye-detect AF doesn't work in video mode on the a7 III either. Which means it doesn't work in video mode in any current Sony camera.

But they do face-detection in video mode, right? Eye-detect shouldn't be that much more difficult. My hopes for the a7S III regarding this are based on the fact that, at almost twice the price, they need to differenciate it from the a7 III, and just 4k 60 fps (which seems mandatory in 2018 for a video-centric >$2k camera) may not be enough. The second easiest thing to add would be eye-detect PDAF in video mode, I think. OK, maybe internal 10-bit 422 is easier in technical terms, but definitely not in don't-cannibalize-your-higher-end-producs terms. XD
