Sony a7III

Additional info some of us may want to hear (because you never know what will be included after a9's release):

- 1080/120p
- 5-axis IBIS
- Same bigger battery the a9/a7RIII have (much better)

I'm predicting this camera will have AMAZING AF in video.

And this about HLG (via B&H):

"HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) support is also available, along with the BT.2020 color space, for recording within a wide color gamut and, in addition to S-Log2, S-Log3 is also available for producing an effective 14-stop dynamic range with increased grading control in the shadow to mid-tone regions of the image."

Hmm. At first glance it looks pretty nice. Certainly nothing to complain about for the price considering it's a full frame sensor shooting 6K and recording 4K. But as an overall tool, I'm not sure.
I'm not seeing anything about a headphone and mic jack on it when looking at the specs on the B&H site.
Just thinking about it in comparison to a GH5 it's still missing a few bells and whistles (10 bit, 4K 60p, proper flip out screen).
Compared to the GH5S how does its color hold up at higher ISOs?
I don't know. I will definitely look into it more. Maybe rent one and check it out.
Never been a fan of the Sony A series ergonomics though but something I could potentially get used to.
Is this weather sealed or no?

It is weather sealed and it does have a headphone jack and mic input (the first two versions have them as well).

ok, just trying to keep up. What was it that that Sony already announced?

A7R III?

And so this is A7 III with a smaller sensor?

And then what, A7S III is predicted to follow?

It's a full-frame sensor as mentioned, which is kind of a big deal for the price and what it is offering.

The a7RIII was announced before this and the a9 before that. Both are primarily stills cameras (well I guess all of these mirrorless' are) but the a7RIII has S-Log2/3 (the a9 shockingly didn't get it).

The a7SIII should be next, but there is also some chatter about an a6700 (an entry level APS-C and would-be successor to the a6300/6500).

IQ looks pretty good but IBIS doesn't seem to be an improvement over my A7sII. not very good from what i see. does anyone know if its technically improved?

To me, this looks like a winner. But I will not buy it.

For stills shooters, it's 95% of an a9 for less than half the price (the only thing missing is the 20fps shooting without EVF blackout) or a cheaper version of the a7R III without the crazy Mpix. It has the bigger battery, the AF joystick, and the dual SD card slots.

For video shooters, it does everything the a7S II does, but with much better AF and maybe more noise in the crazy-high ISO values I never use (52k and above). Unless you're actually shooting in the dark relatively often, I'd take much better AF over crazy-high-ISO. Plus, with 24 Mpix, it's a great camera for stills as well (I found the 12 Mpix on the a7S a big limitation in some cases).

The best thing about this is that Sony is executing perfectly with the a7x III generation. The a7R III was exactly what it had to be. the a7 III is exactly what it has to be. WHERE'S MY A7S III WITH 4K 60FPS AND MAYBE 10-BIT AND MAYBE EVEN IMPROVED DR. (OK, actually I'll be happy if it's just like the a7 III -including Mpix- but with 4k 60fps and eye-detect AF working in video mode)

EDIT:
If anybody gets a Sony rep, or, even better, some hands-on time, here's what I'd like to know about video on the a7 III:
- Does eye-detect AF work in 4k video mode? (on note x of the press release it says it does not work in video mode, but I'm not sure if it only relates to whenever you're using the LA-EA3 adaptor)
- How good is the 1080p 60fps and 120fps? (aliasing/moire? a6500-like softness?)
- How good is 4k 30fps? (according to note xiii, the a7 III only reads the full sensor for 4k 24fps, for 30fps it drops a third of the pixels, does this create aliasing/moire, or softness?)
- Shooting slog3, is DR improved with respect to the a7S II? (I guess not, but just in case let's check it out, right?)

So these cameras are still 8bit 420? Do they at least output clean 10bit 422 in 4K?

I don't use DSLRs and Mirroless cameras as main cameras so I'm not up to date on that. For a crashcam 10bit 422 doesn't matter that much.

But none of the Sonys have? Does the GH5? Do any of the Canons?

The GH5 and GH5s do 10-bit, both internally and externally. The Sonys, Fujis and Canons (including this new a7 III) are only 8-bit (420 internally, 422 externally). At least the codec on the Sonys is quite good (XAVC-S), so, even if it's 8-bit, it's pretty usable (similar to what you may know from the C100, for example). Slog3 is a bit of a stretch sometimes, but slog2 is definitely OK even in 8-bit 420 internal (I see it break often, but it's always when people grade it with LUTs; use curves instead and it's much more difficult to break it).

So the GH5 is the only one with 10bit 422 even externally? Hard to believe in 2018. That's way more important than 4K.

Even the a7S III may not have 10-bit, because the Panasonics are the only ones with 10-bit right now and the DR and sensor size just can't compare, so it's a different market. My expectation right now is that the a7S III will have 4k 60fps and eye-detect PDAF in video mode, and if it also has 24 Mpix and remains not too much north of $3k, I will probably buy it.
