Sony a6500 wide lens confusion

I recently got an a6500 for film work, and I like wideangles... but started to realise there don't seem to be many options for fast, wide lenses or I just don't know about them.

I have the Zeiss 24 1.8 with it, and also a canon 16-35 2.8II which I'll use with an MC-11 adapter without autofocus.

But I'm looking for a lens f2.8 or faster that matches 18mm on super35. So a 12mm full frame lens? or 18mm Aps-c.
Either sony E or canon EF mount...

I also need to be able to use screw in nd filters on it, e.g Hoya Prond.

thanks

HI Pat1,
I bought a laowa 12mm FF canon mount @2.8 for my FS7 or A7RII. There is an emount version too but i prefer setup this lense with metabone speedboster to have a FF @2.0 on my FS7. For my A7R2 i can choose to shoot in FF or aps-c mode and choose setup lense with metabone standard or metabones speedboster if i want shoot in aps-c mode who is more sharp and less noisy. This lense is zero deformation it's incredible and really super super wide. There is back focus problem with metabones speedboster and this lense. To resolve that, look a thread i wrote on this forum on how setup speedboster for infinity back-focus. of course there is 15mm Zeiss Milvus canon mount. https://www.cinema5d.com/laowa-12mm-f2-8-zero-d-hands-on-review-and-comparison/

Hi Samuel,

So if I wanted the equivalent FOV of an 18mm zeiss Ultra Prime on an Arri Amira/alexa, I would get it from either an 18mm Aps-c lens or an 18mm Full Frame lens on an a6500?
thanks

I think arri amira alexa are aps-c (super35) sensor and his prime lenses are not FF, so if don't make mistake an 18mm aps-c lense on your a6500 will do the same FOV but not the same DOF than FF lense + FF sensor. Even with speedboster you can't have same DOF than an FF lense + FF sensor because it's crop. It looks like same FOV but not same DOF.

The sensor in the alexa records an area that is 23.76mm wide, and the sensor in the a6500 is 23.5mm wide. So a 18mm lens will give you the same FoV on both cameras. Whether the lens covers full frame or only APS-C is irrelevant (it would look wider on a camera with a bigger sensor, and you can only use it there if it covers FF, but really, if all you care about is APS-C sensors, it just doesn't matter: image circle doesn't affect FoV, focal length is what you're looking for).

I've been using the Rokinon 12mm T2.2 cine Lens in native E mount on my a6300 for gimbal work (mostly interior wides) and am happy with results.
As for FoV and comparing different camera's (or formats) - I highly recommend bookmarking this page (it's probably posted in 50 different threads on this forum already):

I'm not sure what OP's looking for - other than nice wide, fast lens. As you pointed out, the 18mm is already covered with his zoom range. I suspect or am guessing he meant "matches 18mm (Fov) on full frame " rather than s35...

Even with speedboster you can't have same DOF than an FF lense + FF sensor because it's crop. It looks like same FOV but not same DOF.

Actually, the Speedbooster does effect aperture, and keep the DOF the same. Essentially it takes the full image that would be hitting a FF sensor, and compresses it down to a s35 image circle. Some people get confused though because the Speedboosters report the aperture as being faster - though this is only true when you're still treating the sensor as s35. It's a bit of a marketing stretch, really.

eg: a 24mm 2.8 lens on a Speedbooster will look exactly the same as either:

a) a 24mm 2.8 lens on full-frame; or:
b) an 18mm 2.0 lens on s35

The confusion arises when people mix the 2 - so they believe they are getting a 24mm lens at f/2 on a FF sensor size (partly because the SB reports the f/2.8 lens as an f/2.0). Really they are only getting the f/2 if they treat the sensor as though it is s35 and the lens as though it is 18mm. The crux of it is that you get the same image with a Speedbooster and s35 as you do with FF.

It looks like same but not exactly the same (don't forget than speedboster adaptor is X0.75) it's simple take FF lense plug it on A7RII with metabones standard in FF mode and do the same but sensor in aps-c mode with metabones speedboster ultra and you will see the differance. It's subtile but not the same, picture is a litle cropped with speedboster. Anyway those metabones Tools are really very good thing since severals years for our works on our s35 camera. With those standard and speedboster adapters on my FS7 (S35 only), my FF lens 12mm is near 12mm with speedboster and with standard adaptor (X1.5) it is an 18mm (two lenses in one but the 18mm has a DOF of 12mm cropped so it is why i wrote DOF is not the same). It is my way of thinking.

If you use the Speedbooster Ultra 0.71x it is a bit closer but I agree, it is still not quite an exact match for Full Frame, at least not on my FS700.

haha samuel you are our "wikipedia "lol

your 24mm gives you about the same as a zeiss 18mm zeiss on arri ...sort of. you should just read a bit about these things fov, aputure, sensor size etc and you can calculate them in a few seconds
