Sony A6300 Overheating - Test Results

Eh I dunno, do I wish the camera didn't overheat YES. That being said I got about 25 mins in a warm room before I was forced to shut it down. For what I do 20 to 25 mins is plenty enough for me, also this is going to be my backup/B Cam anyway for my more larger productions. When I use it as an A-Cam it will be in 1080 for quick web uploads so I guess the overheating issue to me is not a large one. I do absolutely love the images I am getting from this thing with my 50mm Milvus on it.

I am interested in the external recording tests though, especially with the new Atomos announcement.

Well the manual says that you will get 29 minutes in HD, not a hell of a big difference.

Issue for me is I wasn't doing a 20 minute "continues recording" before it overheated. I was doing a few minute takes then resetting the shot and then a couple more 2 min recordings and so on. Still the camera overheated and shut down. I probably could live with not doing 20 minute takes but basic shooting with the issue is concerning.

Thanks for that...it is answering a question I had in mind, because most of the testers were trying continous recording...so after that clarification the camera seems to be useless for serious work, at least for me...pity because I really like the images...

You are right which makes the overheating even less of a concern for me. I just pre-ordered the Atomos Ninja Flame monitor so I am anxious to see the external 4K recorders reports.

Now this is concerning, I will try the same thing tomorrow and see what results I get. I shot 1080 on Saturday outside intermittently for about 2hrs and had no problems. I shot about 30 clips each 2 to 5 minutes long and had no problem. But again that was in 1080.

I think you will be fine if you don't trigger the recorder with the a6300. I tested having the camera powered on for over an hour with no issues. With the a7r II it would overheat when you triggered the recorder via HDMI and not be recording internally.

Thanks Erik that's what I was curious about. If that's the case then I am more than happy to shoot into a recorder.

EDITED March 14, 2016:

It looks like there are a lot of reports of overheating turning up! Some of them are no better than my Sony A6000 or RX100IV. Overheating in as few as 21 minutes:

Thanks to Chris Joy for the DPReview link. Worry-ing. I guess I will continue to shoot 4K with my Panasonic G7 and Samsung NX500 for now. I still have my Sony A6000 for casual stills until this all gets sorted,. Along with AF with Canon and Sigma lenses... And that rolling shutter. :)

Cheers!

This is the first test I have seen of overheating with the Sony A6300 in 4K video mode.

It was posted February 29, 2016 by Max Yuryev. The verdict? No overheating!

https://youtu.be/ksc566AajAI

It is a short 2:32 video of him talking about the testing. He says that he ran the A6300 for 3 hours in internal 4K video mode:
  • restarting every 30 minutes
  • changing the battery at 1 hour.
  • with the LCD closed
  • indoors
All without overheating! It looks like he is in an office/ hotel room, probably air conditioned to about 68 degrees F. He mentions his previous experience with other Sony cameras overheating at 20 or 30 minutes, so he seems to understand the issues.

Let's hope that others find this camera as solid as he did, for events and similar needs, with internal 4k. This is obviously very early in the testing process, but we should see a lot more tests over the next month as these cameras start to ship. Call me cautiously optimistic for now! :)

Please share here if you see other, more detailed, or more technical overheating tests on the A6300!

Here is a quick snapshot of the 5 videos made with, or about, the A6300 that he has uploaded so far:

Cheers, and thanks.
Michael

Anyone notice that Max Yuryev is the ONLY one stating he didn't have overheating issues? Even other Sony "Artisans" are reporting overheating issues. That, couple with the fact Max's a6300 overheating video is now marked "private".

I am a big fan of Max - this all makes me pause before hitting the buy button on this a6300.

Makes me wonder if it's overheating just in standby. After all, the sensor is still working.

Jim

I ran the camera for well over an hour with it just on and no temperature warning or overheating. Safe to say you can use it with an external recorder if you don't trigger record via HDMI with the a6300.

I haven't been following this thread lately, but from my experience there are no overheating issues with this camera WHEN using an external recorder. I used it for four 10-hour days. Both - the recorder and the camera - were powered by v-mount batteries and lasted all day. I only shut down the camera and recorder a few times during breaks. Some takes were over 5 minutes. Please keep in mind I didn't record to a card at all.

It's a bummer you may have to use this camera this way as a nice attribute of the unit is its small footprint, but yea, it is what it is.

I experienced overheating already within the first hour or so at diving through the menus and at setting up my function menu and custom buttons. Obviously this was very disappointing because I intended to use the A6300 as my B-Cam for interview situations.

By now I hadn't had the time to run tests with all possible setups, but I tested this three setups yesterday:
1. Standard settings, internal battery, 4K 25p Super35 100mbit/s, screen unfolded - 21 minutes until shut down
2. Same Setup, external Power with Sony AC-PW20 - same result, 21 minutes
3. Airplane mode on, Screen and Viewfinder off, external Power over USB power bank (Anker) - total of 46 minutes until overheating shut down

So there is something one can do, but it's far from reliable. Too bad, because the image quality of this little cam is really exceptional. BTW, if you like to grade some original footage of it's gamma profiles, take a look here https://vimeo.com/159859352
I'll have to take a deeper look into this overheating issues within the next days and have to test external recording too.

This is where the rubber meets the road

Two obvious things helping here are the compression encoding not having to be processed when not recording internally, and secondly there may be a bit less heat from the lack of a battery being discharged inside the body

4:2:2 is a must for me anyway, and the new Atomos is in the cards for Ronin monitoring and it's 1,500 nits

So more details recarding operating environment of these four 10hs days u just had would be very appreciated if you would please

Was it hot? Direct sunlight? If AC environment, what was the approx temp? Was the camera on continously throughout those 4 days? Was the monitor articulation open the whole time? Did you change any settings that may have an impact on heat?

Thanks

And could you please upload a clip or two for us, to see how it grades?

Hope I am not getting too greedy, but those answers and a clip or two would complete the whole picture.

So yea...

No regular battery (dummy battery to D-tap adapter/cable). No auto-focus (used a manual lens 99% of the time). No internal recording.

99% of the shoot was inside in a really warm house. 4K/24p for everything.

The camera and recorder were only turned off a few times throughout the day. Sometimes idle for 10-20 minutes, and sometimes it was take after take after take. "Cut" and "let's do it again". Barely any breaks and it all went perfectly. (Same Extreme Pro SSD that was used in a BMCC in 2013.)

I can't share the 4-day stuff right now, but here's my first day with the camera...just messing around on a little project. I know everyone is crazy about skin tones, but just wanted to mention that they look the way they look in some shots because of mixed lighting, a variation in the white balance value adjustment (Sony calls it the "Color Temperature/Filter" setting) that I was messing around with, and makeup. There was no attempt to "fix" any of that in the footage below.

S-Log3.

https://vimeo.com/159173964 (If you decide to watch it, please playback in 4K!)

For $1000, I am very pleased with the results, and planning on using the camera for lots of static 4K/24p.

Personally, I haven't tried any of the HD, so I have no idea. But there are some tests around here somewhere and people talking about the HD, detail settings, etc.
