Sony a6300 announced

Well, I'm ready to pre-order. Apart from BH and Adorama, any other reliable seller is accepting pre-orders? All of them charge before the merchandise is available?

I know there isn't. When I say "control and monitor" I mean to be able to adjust the audio levels and to be able to see the audiometer like in all of Sony's full frame cameras. Other then that I will use a beachtek anyway.

I know the A6300 has audio meters, and you can select audio rec level in menu.

Good to know. My A5100 doesn't, I just checked. I never noticed before because I usually shoot with an Atomos Ninja which DOES show me levels on the screen, as well as allow me to adjust the gain and monitor with headphones (both audio from the camera and from its own input jack).
I don't know if the A6000 had it, but it appears to be identical to the A5100 in every other way so I assume it doesn't- which makes the 6300 is the first compact from Sony to treat audio as important to the user.

However, I'm going to go out on a limb and also assume that for reasons involving physical design attributes, the 6300 will have the same overheating issues as the earlier APS-C cams, and shooting with an Atomos Ninja is therefore something I'd recommend either way if you want to record for a length of time without worrying about the camera shutting down to cool off.

I would be careful about pre-ordering from B&H. As a long time (20 years) customer of theirs I no longer shop with them due to the Panasonic 25mm 1.7 debacle. They took my money, promised the lens in March then discontinued it, cancelled my order then relisted it with a much higher price. I don't think they care much about thier customers. I would expect the Sony 6300 demand to exceed supply and possibly the same senario. Adorama is a good alternative.

That's good to know, thanks. I think I might wait until I sell part of my equipment first. I've never pre-ordered anything with them so that's good information to have.

No, the XLR-K1M and XLR-K2M do NOT have a headphone jack (at least as far as I've seen... I've only spent limited time with one, but it only had the two XLRs.
Aw I just assumed as I know their wireless lav kit does have a headphone jack for monitoring

In the RX10II and A7RII, you can adjust the audio meters level (it's a digit). You can even assign a button on the camera to quickly access the audio control and change the level...works well. The auto control is great too.

I hope the A6300 is the same.

What does this have to do with the a6300? Your beef is with Panasonic, not B&H. Panasonic cancelled the promotion and raised the price of the lens before fulfilling all orders from retailers at the sale price. You're really killing a 20 year relationship over a $99 lens? SMH.

Panasonic consumer division confines to amaze me with their inept processing, PR, and product intros. Thankfully the Varicam is a Pro Division product.

I hope Sony finally solved their overheating problem. Or I will dump my existing Sony kit and just stay with Panasonic.

I run two 4k cameras at a time for events. When a $450 Panasonic G7 can shoot 1+ hours of internal 4k, I'm not going to spend $4,000 for 2 Sony A6300 and 2 Atomos Ninja Assasin. Plus media, etc.

I've been shooting Sony for 7+ years for stills, alongside Canon and Nikon. Last August I had to add Panasonic to get internal 4K video.

I'd prefer the larger APS-C sensor on the Sony for casual stills, over M 4/3. I kept my Sony with about $1,000 in lenses hoping I could go back to Sony with the A6300. But having 4 systems is driving me crazy, and Sony will be the least valuable of the 4 if they can't, FINALLY, shoot internal video without overheating. :(

I brought my Nikon, Canon, and Panasonic kits to Florida with me in December. I'm here until April- I left the Sony kit at home in Michigan, because Panasonic fills that niche when I have to carry it for 4k anyway.

Oh well.... nothing that I can do I guess, but wait.

Here they mention the sensor gets cropped in 4K a little bit.

Weird, because APSC is pretty much s35mm...

I've never had to shoot 4K so it won't be much of a problem for me if it overheats. I love having an external recorder/monitor so I would gladly consider buying the Atomos if it becomes necessary.

This right here is the rub. At some point you need to ask yourself if your expectation is realistic. In my humble opinion, wanting the efficiency and size of a M43 camera while also having the benefits of an APSC one sounds a bit like having your cake and eating it too.
Little cameras like the G7 can pull off what they do partly because the sensor is smaller and lower resolution. The fact that Sony has managed to cram the kind of power they currently do into something roughly the same size is alone a miracle of modern technology.

Yes, there could be technological advances that will make it possible to have the advantages of both- more efficient and smaller nm circuit embedding, radically new sensor technology, etc. But I get the impression that Sony's engineers have already been pushing the envelope farther than anyone anticipated, and pulling out any stop they could find... and considering that the A7Sii has been reported to overheat in 4k mode, I'd say it is beyond unlikely for the a6300, which is a smaller package and higher resolution (ie processor has to work harder to resample) will somehow manage to do what no other camera manufacturer, Sony or elsewhere, has done. To be clear, I don't think there's a magic "solution" that Panasonic figured out that Sony doesn't know about, but rather they are working with easier specs to deal with which will generate less heat by nature.

And even if I'm wrong about this (and I would *LOVE* to be!), and the a6300 is somehow powered by unicorn breath and rainbow dust that never overheats, it would still have the sub-30min recording limit due to video vs photo camera regulations in certain parts of the world. All of the camera manufacturers do this for tariff reasons, and show no sign of letting up on it. Panasonic is the only one who made a distinction NOT to on their US models, where the classification between photo and video device doesn't exist anyway.

Basically, what it comes down to is, if you want a super affordable compact ILC that can record video indefinitely, don't sit around waiting with a stockpile of saved Sony gear- Panasonic is really your best bet (oh, and PM me about selling said stockpile on the cheap! LOL). If you want a larger sensor, you'll have to make some compromises somewhere, be it recording limits or heat issues or size or price tag. This has been true for a very long time and I wouldn't hold my breath to see it change anytime soon.

Personally, this is why I used to keep a closet of photography cameras and a set of Panasonic GH2s and G6s for live events and other longform recording jobs. You just can't beat the package for reliable video in this form factor. The photos aren't as good as larger sensor cameras, but for video it was good enough for me. At the time, at least. However, once I started shooting Sony, I realized that I no longer liked the look coming off of my Panasonics. Be it the DOF, colors, whatever. I just really liked my Sony footage a lot better. That's when I went in and bought Atomos recorders, figuring that they were around the same price as dedicated Panasonic cameras, and I got to use the cameras I really liked better.
The way I see it is, with an external recorder, you can make a camera like the Sony have the benefits of the Panasonic cameras. But you can never get the reverse out of the Panasonic cameras. They'll always have smaller sensors and colors that I personally didn't care for.
To be fair, this was a much easier decision for me because I still don't care for 4k, and Atomos Ninja 2 retail boxes are under $300.

Anyway... sorry, went off on a bit of rant here, what were we talking about?
I never had any oveyheating issues with the a6000 but 4k it's a different beast

You, sir, should consider yourself lucky! I've heard that the firmware 2.0 really helped, but the original overheated on event jobs all the time. My friends who use them used to curse them out incessantly, and I've seen plenty of folks on this here forum saying the same. Friends who still have theirs with v2.0 tell me that if they make it to the full 30min limit one time around, maybe it can make it a second 30 minutes, but the running time goes downhill from there. So they can't rely on it for ceremony speeches and the like because they never know when it will start failing to continue.

Meanwhile, you are right about 4K being a different beast. The A7s original didn't have heat problems, yet they added 4k internal on the A7sii and it started. There's no way the A6300 won't have it IMO.
