Sony a 6500

Here's hoping the overheating has been addressed. The 5 axis stabilization makes this pretty compelling, but we'all have to see about the overheating.

I saw it on DPReview this morning; I'm kinda surprised considering the A6300 was announced only 8 months ago.
I might be really tempted to pick one up If it can be used outside of Antarctica without over heating.

Sony claims the new LSI improves rolling shutter, judging by the seemingly endless jpeg's this camera can shoot, processing has improved significantly. That and a slightly larger grip will hopefully improve things.

I just shot a lot of video at a wedding in Tucson, it was hot and I had no issues with my a6300, but I shoot lots 300 clips, ranging from 4 min to a few seconds. I haven't had any issues yet in the hot Florida sun either, but I don't shoot endless continuous takes.

I'm buying two a6500's.

And selling my a7rII and a6300.

And I think I'm going to pick up a RX100V for 240fps and 4k as a small cam to replace my GoPro.

Yes, I am going the same direction. There is just too much value in these little cameras to ignore. Three of these can get you a lot more than one more expensive camera if you are a one man band.

6500 is not going to replace 6300 though. It's a step-up model.

The price difference makes it look like a step-up model, but the name makes it look like a replacement model. It seems Sony has set up its naming sequence to throughly confusing everyone.

I agree was not impressed with the video quality - I did a test with one. I thought maybe I had done something wrong as I noticed the images seemed a bit soft. Wondering what others think. I am wondering if the 6500 is a bit sharper.

Try the a6500 before you sell off the a7rii. On paper it's a better camera in a lot of ways but Sony stated that body is the same and the camera has more electronics in it. IBIS could potentially add more heat. The extra "enhanced front-end LSI" processor Sony added could also help the camera from working so hard and preventing overheating and I think rolling shutter will be reduced as well.

Sure would be great to have 100 Mbps in 1080 too.

I requested a review copy and will get one when released. I had a hell of a time with the a6300 and overheating so I've been to this party before and it was not fun. I live in San Diego and yeah. It's pretty mild here wether wise. We shall see. If it doesn't overheat I might be selling off my a7rii as well.

I have the RX100 IV and just putting the camera in 4K mode makes it overheat. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

The a6500 is the third camera in a lineup. The a6300 is not being discontinued. I believe the a6000 is still available as well and is a bargain if you just need a solid inexpensive hybrid. HD is very good and still are too.

Erik-

Does the 6000 overheat while doing 1080p?

I thought I remembered that heat was an issue even pre-4K.

Be well.

This is interesting.

[h=4]Camera Labs[/h]"there's a new menu option which changes when the over-heating warning icon appears: there's Standard or High options, the latter simply allowing the camera to keep operating even when it's getting hot, although protection will still kick-in to prevent any damage. When shooting with the earlier A6300, I found the body could get quite hot to touch, and revealingly Sony's engineers recommended using the A6500 on a tripod when the temperature warning had been adjusted - not to do with stabilisation, but because the body may become uncomfortably hot."

If Sony lets the a6500 get hot but not shutdown until it's critical I think I'm good with this. The new menu option for Standard and High seems like a fix without fixing the issue. and I'm good with that!

The A6000 overheated on me shooting a Franklin Graham meeting outdoors at only around 75 degrees. I was shooting 1080 60P and the longest clip I think was around 12 minutes. It stopped recording and the clip was usable. I was shooting handheld with a sony E mount lens and no additional gear attached. Using the genuine Sony battery. After that I realized I could not rely on it for a paid job. When the reports came out on the 6300 I passed on it.

FWIW, someone hacked Samsung NX500 to do "only" 2.5K and the rolling shutter has virtually disappeared.

It should be easy for Sony to offer that on A6500, if they so desired.

I am sure the 6500 is a step up model or more of oh crap our camera is overheating like crazy and we can't fix it through firmware model... lol I love they added value to the a6500 but if the A7rii overheats then you can bet there is a good change this will as well. Sony does not seem to care about the overheating anyways. I mean we know they overheat but yet we keep buying them and creating work arounds. I pre ordered the a6500 and I am selling my a6300 but if this bad boy overheats I am kinda done with the sony mirrorless for some time.

It's almost guaranteed to overheat. Hopefully that pre-order will allow you to send it back without issues. If you need a camera that doesn't overheat, I think this is not what you're looking for.

Definitely not for me as I need my gear to not overheat. I'm hoping the A7S III has most of the video specific goodness that the A6500 has though (af system, ibis, etc), I figure it won't overheat since it's sensor will have far less data to process.
