Sony 18 55 kit glass....

18-55 kit lens

Anyone ever use this on fs700 in 4K? I'm thinking of getting this just for oss and AF (for use on kind of steadycam rig thingy)

I have a 18 -200 kit lens but want something a little lighter. All my other glass is manual.

The reviews on B&H are kind of a little all over the place. I'm just curious if shooting 4K would present any problems other than the normal problems you would expect with a cheapo kit glass.

One review said purple fringing all over, the next one says it's great??? thoughts? opinions?

They are very cheap to buy on ebay ... Just get one and see what you think. They come as standard on nearly all the NEX compact cameras.

This is a hilarious lens.

It is quite distorted (on the FS100) at the wide end - Im sure like the 18-105 is is deigned to be used with in camera software to correct distortion.

The build quality is pretty poor.

BUT
I actually quite like it, the AF works pretty well and the manual focus actually has a far better action and responsiveness than the 18-250
It weighs nothing.
I do like it - I should not but I do!

I shot this with it on my NEX5.. It was fun just to take the one lens out for the day!

morgan, that video is probably the best NEX 5 / KIT LENS film i've ever seen (the only one i've ever seen with that combination). Fantastic!

Thank you. Im actually glad to be reminded of the lens.

Simply the 18-55 range, the stabilisation and OK manual focussing and low weight make it a very fluid lens to use.

The film is (if it is) any good because I was able to minimally faff with the camera and concentrate on positioning myself and my lens.

How about the newer 17-50 kit lens? Anyone got anything worthwhile out of that one? It needs correction but that's supported in the 2.10/3.10 update...

This one?

Maybe this is better? 3 times+ the $ and 4 more oz but seems to be less problematic?

I second that. The 16-70 f4 is a very nice lens, use it on my a6000 & FS700 all the time.

Also remember that with the freshly available firmware 3.10, lens distortion correction is now available, well, actually more like forcibly on forever on the FS700, so you can FINALLY use the 18-105 f4G lens (or even the microscopic collapsing 16-50 kit lens from the a6000).

I can confirm that correction is working at all frame rates, even HFR, which is more than can be said for the new FS7.

What does that mean Juan? I'm currently at 3.01 If I update firmware, does it automatically correct for the glass it see's mounted? The 18-105 f4 has bad pincushion, does it auto correct for that or does it mess up the image quality?

I haven't heard too much about the 16-70 having any bad traits like the 18-105. Can the lens correction be turned on/off if you don't like what it does to the image?

It's automatic you can't turn it off although I don't know why you you'd want to.
On the 18-105 the pincushioning is just gone. Nice looking image at all frame
rates even 240 which is strange because I had heard it wouldn't work past 60fps.
From what I understand the lens correction won't work in 4k as the extra pixels
are not present to correct the image. But in HD it seems to work great.
I shot this with the 18-105

/QUOTE]

This is what I'm most concerned about. I now shoot almost entirely in 4K, so if I'm shooting 4K with ver 3.10 (fs FW) and with the 18-105 (or 16-70) How does that effect the image or shooting in higher frame rates? (at 4k)
Does it just NOT fix the pincussion? or does it slow down FPS capture?

Also, while I've heard about 18-105 distortion, I haven't heard that about the 16-70...

When you say the "On the 18-105 the pincushioning is just gone" are you capturing to avchd? because (even if I decide to capture 1080) I'll be using 4k raw to hd, so the camera will essentially be capturing at 4k not 1080.

I do not have or use any external capture system (Atomos, CD etc) so I can not relate personal experience, however, on another thread here, someone who does use a 7Q has stated unequivocally that distortion correction is ***NOT*** applied to the 4K external recording.

I suspect that the situation is not entirely different than when using a stills camera - distortion correction in camera is applied to the JPGs, but not to the RAW... it is up to your RAW decoding program to apply distortion correction, if it can... eg Lightroom "knows" about most Sony still cameras & lenses, so it can "fix" RAW still images, even ones shot on the distortion heavy lenses noted below.

Anyway, at the moment, Sony only has TWO "software" lenses - lenses that are so distorted as to be unusable without correction - these are the 18-105mm f4 G power zoom, and the tiny, collapsing 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 power zoom included with cameras such as the NEX6, a5100 and a6000. A "software lens" is not an inherently bad thing (even the likes of Hasselblad have them), however the fact that Sony does not state which lenses are software lenses, and that not all Sony devices can perform in-body distortion correction (nor is this characteristic ever mentioned in camera specs) is what makes the situation with Sony so intolerable.

The Sony Zeiss 16-70mm f4 is a "normal" lens. It requires no distortion correction.

After installing FS700 firmware 3.10, there is no additional menu option to enable or disable distortion correction (such as is found on the a6000 stills camera). It appears to be forced "on" all the time, and as I stated earlier, it is in fact applied to EVERY FRAME RATE, all the way to 960fps for INTERNAL AVCHD recordings.

If a person is using an external recorder, or does not have either of the aforementioned "software lenses", then I see no valid reason to install firmware 3.10 other than to maintain the resale value of the camera.
