Sony 12.5-75mm F1.8 C-mount

I can tell you that you will get heavy vignetting with that "peep hole" look up until the 50-75mm range. I've used and bought many c-mount zooms like the Sony c-mount that you are looking at. It looks like it can focus to infinity but that's not always the case. it's trial and error based on the lens.

If you do purchase it let us know how it works on your GH1 or new GH2. I'm also curious about the digital zoom feature although from the specs it may not help c-mounts unless we got a variable zoom that could allow us to zoom just past the vignetting.

Thanks, guys -- yeah, I'm hopeful for the variable option as well, at least having options like 1.5x, 2x, etc. I like the look of the Canon, I wonder if I should snap up one before they get more expensive?

Some of the B4 lenses look pretty good as well, I hope someone will start mass-producing adapters soon.

Any other recommendations for C-mount or similar? Bought a 25mm security lens, was thinking about maybe an 8mm or something, in advance of the Gh2.

If you can find these lens in c-mount zooms for a good price pick them up.

If we do get a 1.5x option they would be great to use. The Schneider has a larger image circle and is quite sharp.

Schneider Variogon 1:2/18-90
Angenieux Type L2/L3 1:2.2/17-68

These are a few of my favorite c-mount primes that I like from my batch of lenses.

Kodak Ektar II 25mm f/1.4
Kodak Ektar 25mm f/1.4
Kodak Ektar 40mm f/1.6
Computar 25mm f/1.3
Wollensak Raptar 25mm 1" f/1.9
Yvar 75mm f/2.5

I went c-mount crazy when the G1 first came out so I have a number of c-mounts and though got some interesting results with the GH1. The digital zoom pretty much degraded the footage and I've held on to these lenses simply because I love old cine c-mounts and hoped that the GH2 or AF100 could bring something better to the table.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out. I'd like to look for some locally, not quite sure where to find them, though -- In Saint Paul there is a place called Ax-Man surplus that seems like a likely option - I remember they have an old news camera and turret on display from way back when...

A no-name 17-102mm F2 popped up on ebay, hopefully I'll snag that for not much. I figured that with such an idiosyncratic focal range that it would likely be the same design as the Canon you mentioned.

The Russian K3 16mm movie camera with the Meteor 17-69/1.9 would be a good item to keep your eye on. There's some vignetting on my GH1 but infinity focus is not a problem.

The Meteor 17-69/1.9 is a M42 mount, but the rear element goes _very_ deep, so if you're looking for an adapter, get one that does not have a rear flange.

The K3 also comes with a detachable shoulder-mount w/ a 3/8 tripod mount.

Looks pretty good, I wish I had a 16 mil camera. I have an m42 adapter, I'm afraid I don't know about the rear flange. At risk of sounding stupid, how can I tell?

No risk of poking the sensor?

With a m43 adapter, the rear element doesn't even extend past the mount, so there's no risk of poking the sensor.

m42 adapters with a flange are designed to depress the stopdown pin. It's not easy to see this from ebay pics, so your best option is to ask.

So if the digital zoom is fixed at 2.6x, would I be correct in saying that lenses made for 1/2" sensors would be optimal -- that is, that they would remain most consistent with the intended focal range? Since 21.6mm (the four thirds diagonal length) divided by 2.6 = 8.3mm, and a 1/2" sensor has an 8mm diagonal. If the 2.6x is fixed, then a 2/3" lens would be somewhat more telephoto than it would be on a 2/3" sensor.

Is this correct? Or am I being dopey again?

Would love to see some pictures or video of the Meteor Zoom from GH1. Can you post something?

Here is a b4 zoom, which has similar coverage over the GH2 chip

It retains a good DOF even in telecine mode.
