I've avoided both Slogs in Custom because you can't use MLUT's. Do you guys find that annoying. Of course I have an Odyssey 7Q which will show me the Lutted shots.

I had always felt the colors were a bit off when choosing slog in custom (at least using 3cine) - and that the advantage of being able to white balance in that mode was of little benefit since I never found a WYSIWYG look I was satisfied with. So I stuck with the HG files (mostly 7/8). But having said that - icarus' post above makes me curious to try his and other paint settings again with more patience. Maybe I didn't explore this option enough those first few months I did most of my testing on the camera.
In theory, this would give you 2 extra stops of dynamic range - as I believe the HG's top out at 12 stops.

Lenny, the whole point of using Custom instead of Cine EI is to avoid having to grade in post. In other words, the goal is to have a WYSIWYG look right out of the camera that is ready to go on air. So why would you want to look at a MLUT overlaid on that? That could lead to nothing but confusion for determining exposure, lighting, white balance, etc. If the Custom look is good enough for WYSIWIG then it surely must be good enough for viewing in the viewfinder and/or displaying on the client monitor. A MLUT shouldn't be needed with a scene file or the scene file sucks anyway. And if think the Custom scene sucks and is going to require grading, then you'd be better off shooting Cine EI S-LOG in the first place -- or going back to the drawing board and building a better scene file.

Dont't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with shooting Custom, but a pleasing combination of paint settings must be chosen for it to be successful.

Of course I understand that in general Doug, but we're talking about using Slog in Custom ( big advantage s white balance). I was simply saying I never considered Log in Custom because there were no MLUT's. However now the idea of using Slog2 in Custom has come up as something that can be adapted to something close to a WYSIWYG look. A new concept to me that I never even considered before. Of course I wouldn't put a LUT over it.

I intend to explore it.

Although I am relatively new to the camera (previously shot with C100 and Black Magic Cinema Camera), I prefer to shoot in CINE EI for everything. I prefer to adjust the image later in post versus trying to paint the picture in camera. It seems to me that anything you can create on the Custom side can be created on the CINE EI side with grading. I've also noticed a significant difference in color quality between the Matrix mode on the Custom side and the S-gamuts on the CINE EI. Even in low light, the colors seem more nuanced on the CINE EI side. I have to say that it has taken me a while to get comfortable with the camera and this forum has been a great help.

I made this two years ago testing the FS7

Filmed in Custom slog3, HD only things I changed were a bit brightness and a bit contrast
