Lut, SDI, HDMI, ZEBRA, SLOG3, SLOG2, MATRIX, KNEE, WB, PAINT, MULTI MATRIX, AXIS, PHASE, ADAPTIVE MATRIX, CRISPENING, OFFSET WHITE, SKIN ETC,

I think I know about 60% of the settings from the Sony FS7. But still, some of the options are abracadabra for me. Matrix, I don't know what that is and I don't want to know yet. But I can use this wonderful camera and I get good footage from it.

After three years this camera still ignites discussions about settings and Luts. I always think I am the only one that doesn't (want to) understand all the settings. But now I have some doubt, who, besides Doug, Alistair, Dennis, Camerman Ben and some other respected members who else on this forum has 100% knowledge of every aspect of this camera and its many menu's and settings?

With my dp502 delivering luts and wfm I need to know even less

My manual iris lenses help too.

My interaction with the camera is minimised to s+q shutter angle and c temp switch.

Like most others...probably not as well as I should. I certainly don't mean to turn the camera into a one trick pony but for the work I'm doing I don't stray to far from 1080, 23.97, Cine EI, S2.

There are still things to learned from shooting with my FS7 but as most others I tend to stay in Cine EI and don't dig to deep into settings.

But I made one discovery the other day. When shooting UHD there's two different settings for the SDI output and one does output progressive over SDI instead of PSF 50i. Good to know if one uses a SmallHD monitor which can't do proper deinterlacing of PSF signals.

I know it quite well - certainly over 75%. I Use Custom ( Std and Hypergammas) and Cine EI depending on the circumstances and often find that CINE EI is too flat for the situation. I may get a better result from Custom (with good flesh tones) and I don't have to leave it to the client whose gradings skills are often minimal . This way I can give them what i think is a great picture . I use a Matrix setting I made myself with a DSC chart. On a stage with white limbo std gamma w Custom Knee setting is a life saver. But there are still lots of questions. What the hell is "adaptive Matrix" , Slog 2 vs Slog 3, Still digging into LUTs and LUTCalc especially for shooting CINE EI under mixed lighting. Lots to learn about Post and Resolve.

Interesting how many of you guys are afraid of the Custom menu - CINE EI is not always superior.

I use custom 30 percent of the time def in Lowlight at night HG7, for news (i do less and less) hg8 and Standard5 in lit interviews.
I also get very good results with slog2 in custom mode when shooting in strong highlights outdoors (90% white at 60) blacks at -5 to -8, try it for some reason it creates very pleasing skin tones and gives you loads of highlights. All it needs is a little nudge in contrast and saturation which even news people can do.

I haven't played with either Slog in Custom Mode - interesting idea that I may use on upcoming shoot. Thanks for the Nudge.

Very nice. Did those come out of the camera that way or did you need to do Post work. Add the saturation and contrast in Post or in camera? Slog2 LUT in Post?
S Gamut I assume? What about your Matrix settings - are those even available in SLog2 Custom?

Nice Icarus - thanks for posting. Strangely, I have not tried that combo but will now.
I would say I'm about 85 / 15 shooting EI vs custom. There are certain jobs I do where I absolutely need to have a finished look to files in camera. And I still have clients who don't even want to have a conversation about log - and want the lower bit rate of HD422. And while I favor shooting XAVC-I in the EI mode - the HG's in custom -( I've used Doug's broll scene file in custom multiple times ) - work well with occasionally adding a bit more contrast to taste.
Honestly - the many many options of this camera - obviously some which remain unexplored - keeps me excited about using it for years to come.

it comes out very close to this and its not S-gamut its FL-light which I find helps with skin tones in custom. I didn't do the post on this (otherwise i would have shot cine EI) but I can tell you that it comes out pretty close to this Im sure a 1.1-1.2 contrast + a little saturation helps but nothing an editor wouldn't do with any footage.
Its shot on the Zeiss otus 55mm a very contrasty and sharp lens. But that has been my "halfway house" setting for strong highlights in Custom mode also great for mixed lighting as you can white balance. And easy even for less experienced editors to touch up.

Thats why I say that this camera keeps getting better and better every month.
