Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

Hey Pal,

If not already posted, can you provide a list of items that you used and the steps in making this dolly?
The footages have come very clean.... Very impressed.

Thanks.

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

OK, wheres what I bought:

(2) 1/2 inch pieces of wood (birch I think)
(2) 3 Foot L bracket (In the garage section at hardware stores) with slots already drilled.
(2) Pack of 8 rollerblade wheels with bearings.
(1) 2x4 Piece of Business type carpet
(2) 10 foot "1" inch thick PVC pipe

& (various) Nuts screws and bolts to mount everything.

The steps are listed I think in the link I provided in my other post.

Very nice work. Very cinematic and spooky. Did you use anamorphic adapter or in camera letterbox?[/quote]

In camera letterbox. I want the ANA, but Im only gonna get it when I get funding for a movie I wanna make

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

That looks so good, I just want to sit and watch a whole movie of your work shed!

Please share your design with us. Looks like two angle irons bolted at each end, 16 in-line skate wheels, plank, carpet, pvc pipe runs and voilah!! Am I missing anything? Are you planning any brackets to plant the tripod feet? Thanks!

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

Opps, guess I posted before reading page 2, but anyway my powers of reasoning looked like it was right on the money.

yep, you got all the ingredients. I bought cups for the tripod legs to sit in, but once the carpet was put on, the tripod just doesnt go anywhere! Now, the only very difficult thing is panning while moving the dolly. I have yet to get 1 decent shot while panning with the dolly moving.

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

That's where having a dolly grip helps.  With some help from a couple friends, I built a dolly very similar to Hudson's (sans push handle) and always get raves about the shots.  On a recent shoot for a friend (mini industrial), I only had one helper and she was handling the mic boom.

I needed a dolly shot down a hall and then pan to the talent.  It took a lot of takes as I was trying to shoot the footage and control the dolly at the same time.  BTW, I'm definitely adding handle like Hudson's and finding another assistant!

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

Good point, is there room on the platform for you to ride along as well? How much weight do you think it will comfortably support (in the range of 165....a-hem, 170lbs plus cam and tri?).

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

Yes, theres enough room to ride, but its hard to find someone to waste a whole day with pushing me on this thing! I weigh 155 lbs and its fine. I would think up to 200+ wouldnt be a problem

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

I'm assuming that if you used a curved track this dolly can turn corners, right?

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

NO

You have to have some kind of gimble/rotating axle to compensate for the run.

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

So there I am in the PX, picking up a Wireless PCI card, the 7th Buffy, Garden State, and Hell's Angels. I pass near the kids' section on the way to cashier...

Hmmm....think one of the "trikes" at WRFF.com could be used as a base for a "self-propelled" doorway dolly?

I'm thinking attach a pillar with a head on it between the seat and the steering gear...and get a bigger seat (because my ass is no longer that small).

And probably re-do the way the pedals are attached. Make it so you can pedal backwards, too.

Whaddya think?

Dan
