Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

[quote author=GenJerDan link=board=Clips;num=1104220202;start=30#38 date=01/03/05 at 05:55:14]So there I am in the PX, picking up a Wireless PCI card, the 7th Buffy, Garden State, and Hell's Angels.  I pass near the kids' section on the way to cashier...

Hmmm....think one of the "trikes" at WRFF.com could be used as a base for a "self-propelled" doorway dolly?

I'm thinking attach a pillar with a head on it between the seat and the steering gear...and get a bigger seat (because my ass is no longer that small).

And probably re-do the way the pedals are attached.  Make it so you can pedal backwards, too.

Whaddya think?

hmmm....maybe. One thing that I have learned is that ANY body movement is seen by the camera. My dolly is smooth as butter and if im on it and even move a little, the end result is not professional. WIth that said, I would think that you would get alot of shake with that.

Hmmmm...it would seem to me that the more weight on the dolly, the less shake you'd get. Maybe it depends on the suspension/tires? (And surface, of course)

its not the wight, its the movement of the weight. If your pedaling, the camera will probably catch it

I may be the first one to point this out, but it appears you have spacers or some type of bushing between your wheels and your angle. What is that distance so that the wheels are pointed in at the right angle to fit and roll the smoothest on the track?

thanks.

good eye. Yes I have plastic spacers in there. I forget what size they are. Originally I was walking around with over 100 washers and thought "hmmm...maybe theres a spacer that will work better". They do. Just take 2 wheels and the L Bracket and cut a piece of PVC to take it in with you. Thats how youll know exactly how far to space it.

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

Yes, I too have been inspired!

I've started to build my dolly, and I think I made the same choice you did with the "L" bar.  I bought 1.5 inch, which is forcing me to bump the wheels out (so that they don't hit each other or the 4x6 plywood).  Bummer.  But I couldn't find any 2 inch.

I decided to go with 70mm Krypto Classics wheels and Abec 7 bearings ... because if my dolly doesn't pan out (he he he) I'm taking this baby to the skate park to see what it can do!!!

Question:  How did you allign the "L" bars along the bottom?  Snapline? Eyeball?  ruler?

Why 2 sets of wheels at each corner?

I'm using one set of wheels (skateboard) for now, and a 2x4 piece of birch which I think should be stable enough.  But I have a second piece just in case ...

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

There are 2 sets of wheels to lessen the "jerkiness" when you roll onto a new piece of pvc pipe if i remember correctly

For a second there I though I was watching a trailer for a high buget movie, the lighting was something else. ;)

barant: That dolly is absolutely cool looking!

I've finished building mine, but it's in T.O. and I am in DC, so it will take a week or so until I get to post something. So far, a quick test I did looked awesome - except for the light. I need to pull out decent light (my fluorescent basement lamp just doesn't cut it), and something nice to shoot.

I have a suggestion - how about one of the upcoming DVX Fest contest featuring all the DVX users home-made dollies? I think that could be fun. IIRC, there are at least four or five out there already.

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

Hey Barant,
From what people have said, your footage sounds amazing. Can't get it to play myself, WMV's don't like macs too well. Anychance of making a MOV file?
But even more importantly, would it help to connect the two PVC pipes together? Probably at either ends where the dolly doesn't roll. Would this keep the track and the camera more steady?
Thanks,
Justin

Re: Some video from MY dolly I just finished!

When I put together my dolly I found some great wheels at Walmart of all places. You can get a mini-skateboard for just under $5, so you get nice thick wheels. Great video by the way.
