Some SundanceFest H1 24F SDI to DVCPROHD clips

So are you suggesting that we should do a conversion of HDV to DV100 before editing rather than working with the .m2t files? I can certainly see the benefits of that I suppose. After seeing this and testing the XL-H1 in person, I believe that will be the camera that I will purchase this week. the HVX is still compelling, but the Canon is proving to be a winner to me ... thanks for your input!

All I can say is wow ... this footage looks great considering it went through HDV compression to DVCPROHD. I noticed the files are downsized too, but I blew it up to full screen playback on my 30" Apple Cinema Display and it still looks incredibly good ... I can only imagine the raw full sized file. This Canon just keeps looking better and better ...

Agreed on the monitor situation.

I got up close, saw the noise, then scooted back to real viewing length and it STILL looks great.

It could've been compression or whatever.. .but it was good.

I think it's the most hassle-free of all the options on the mac. 24F won't even capture currently in FCP. It skips like there's something wrong with the signal coming in via firewire. When you do capture HDV, I swear I've looked at this, and it seems like it demuxes it and maybe loses some quality. Hard to quantify, but I've noticed a slight loss.

We'll have to re-evaluate once FCP has native m2t editing, not the m2v format it currently converts the transport streams to.

The bottom line is DVCPROHD is a well-established broadcast hd standard, and a pretty decent codec to edit with. It's a reasonable bit rate and fairly easy for current computers to deal with.

On the PC, I would be inclined to go with Cineform. Still, at the end of it all you have to go to some established broadcast format, and again, that's where DVCPROHD has an advantage...that is, if you have something that might actually air in HD at some point.

I'm sure there will be more options in the future, (like a portable SDI for the Canon)
but it does seem like DV100 just plain works.

I am going to do some HD-SDI out directly to an HD1200A deck in the next couple weeks. I will post some footage when I get it done so you can see what the footage is like when bypassing HDV altogether... of course, you need a $30,000 deck to do it =o)

Ash,

I highly doubt you'll be disappointed...but do remember to tweak the settings a little.
You can finesse the hell out of it if you want.

Can't wait to see your results!

These clips are just GORGEOUS !!
I can't believe these have passed from HDV-DVCPro multiple compressions.

I too noticed some clips (DVCPro ones) were set to 640x 360, but this happens when you conform a clip in CinemaTools - No pixel was gone, just QuickTime display size is set to small, so you can set it back to native size and save the clip if you've got QT pro. (Hit command + i to see what the current size is)

Anyway, is this recorded to tape then captured by Kona via H1's HD-SDI ?
I've seen Kaku Ito's footage that went almost same approach but captured uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2. To me, this Sundance footage looks *better*.
For those interested, here is the link to whopping 765MB zip file. (you have to register to dl)

This is a Kona 2 uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2 file captured using Canon XLH1 and its HD-SDI connected to DecklinkHD, then wrapped up to less than 1GB with Kona 2 format.* I made mistake by doing this I should have kept the format as Decklink HD.* I will replace this file later, but I post it anyway for anyone who can't wait.

BTW, I've heard from a shop guy that H1's HD-SDI out is after HDV compression.
Could this be the reason I can't see Kaku's footage be much better ?

PS:
I converted above Kaku's uncompressed footage to DVCPRO QuickTIme.
You can download it here.

This is totally false. THe HD-SDI does indeed bypass the HDV codec and gives you true digital uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 footage from the camera.

The guy doesn't know much about the camera, then - I'd be better avoid shopping from them

I can see the HD-SDI capturing as a problem.

It can get costly to capture such good footage, until those freaking firestore solutions appear.

Sheesh.

So nerve wracking.

If I were to shoot my short on this camera, I'd DEFINITELY be renting a deck. No doubt about it.

I know all about tweaking the XL cameras, most the setups for the XL2 are based on my settings... XLH adds some more to play with...

God damn those clips look good! The miscsundance looks especially filmic. Very impressive Mr. Elton! I might have to get myself an H1 also If I keep seeing stuff like this.

Not sure if you caught this from another poster but for some reason Cinema Tools presents the clip at 640x360 by default, even though the original size is 1920x1080.
That's why it still looked good blown up on your monitor. You were looking at the original HDV to DV100 file.

I feel as stupid guys, believe I've tried all...must be something with Xp or something...I've tried also with Dap...he forced me to open the html file but when pops out, again "Save as target"...I've all system with recent updates, Browser (Mozilla and Ie) all ultimate updates.
I wanna say that last week the page open without any problem, but from you've added this footage I can't open a damn thing.
I remember you that I've Xp in italian version...maybe something with language I dunno. If someone has the same problem please help...

Indeed ... get your info from us

Its amazing how store staffing seems to have very limited knowledge of the items they are selling. When I was at B&H, I ended up answering way more questions about the cameras there to other customers then the actual staff was.

I was truly baffled when one of the sales people told me that the JVC HDV camera's 24P was fake

Elton, on the Blackmagic Decklink and audio --

What would you suggest for audio capturing in this case? Another workaround that might work until post options become better?

Two or three options, but none of them ideal:

--You can recapture HDV audio from tape and then resync later. (blechh)

--Capture via RCA out of the H1 and pipe into miniplug (stereo) into the G5. I've actually tried this and it works fine. Captures and syncs 16bit 48k without issues. Make sure you get a high quality Y cable.

--Get an M-audio interface and capture through 1/4 balanced/unbalanced connections via card or breakout box.

Personally, I think the second one is the most practical, even if it seems a little hokey. The audio chip in the G5 is actually quite good.

First off, that is the best HDV footage I've seen yet. I had the .264 clip full screen on my Dell 2405 and it looked very impressive.

I'm curious - how come you didn't just move the footage from the camera via Firewire? Why did you ingest through the card?

Thanks. I'll be considering pitching at least one Kona LH for production purposes here, or perhaps an actual deck. One of the two should be fine if the XLH1 is our camera of choice.

Still can't find a damned HVX200 to play with, though.

Check the first pages of the thread.

Basically, I think SDI out is a better, more practical alternative, provided you get an SDI card. H1 24F is very efficiently encoded, and SDI out seems to almost bump up the quality, but I can't really prove that.

It's pretty ironic to me that I'm only considering HDV an acquisition codec. The H1 DIGIC does some amazing stuff, but the MPEG2 format, even with an acclerated Kona card, isn't my cup of tea for post.

Yeah I got that part. I guess I see that you are converting to the new codec while going through the card. It seems that for those that don't have that card or want to pay for one can go through firewire and then convert to the superior codec for editing via the computer. Just will mean waiting for the clips to be converted.

The part that impresses me is that the footgage (input via the card or firewire) still came from HDV. Since I'm on a PC, I'm thinking Cineform will be my editing codec and I'll go to uncompressed for some shots that need effects and extra color grading.
