some recent grabs

...well i figure i havent posted any grabs or anything in a while, so i snagged some from a couple of recent projects. couldnt show anything important cause projects are in festivals and other competition stuff..so nothing too special. these just looked pretty as i quickly flipped through the projects. first 3 are pretty diffused cause project is dreamy like.
edit: feedback is of course welcome.

Re: some recent grabs

yeh theyre beautiful... just beautiful.

The colours are just so rich and vivid, looks really good. My fav frames would be the 2nd and 4th, but theyre all great.

For the first two im assuming you applied some filters, or a blured layer or something to give it that diffused look, or maybe you shot with a diffuser i dunno

It looks like youve done a lot of colour correction to enrich the colours

are these for anything imparticular? or are they just random shots

also im assuming theyre dvx... they just look too good for dvx :P

Re: some recent grabs

yeah the foggy dock shot is really impressive how did you accomplish that look? THe colors are bright and vivid on the bee shot, what settings did you use? it looks amazing

Re: some recent grabs

Wow Neil, those are some amazing shots. I love the last one. Did you use the anamorphic lens for that. It is so sharp.

Nice work.

Re: some recent grabs

Fantastic shots.

Please share the details on how you achieved them. What was done "in camera" and what was done "in post"?

Re: some recent grabs

hey thanks guys,

heres the info: top 3 had soft focus filter, and slight contrast added. no correction beyond that. the dock shot actually looked like that when were there, it was pretty surreal. shot with the eyes is alot crisper when its not diffused.
Wasp shot was just taken yesterday. along with some footage of my family on a nature hike. my wife pointed it out, so i shoved the camera in its face and it stayed there. i think it either wants to be a star.. or its dying from the cold.  ;)   anyway  the top 3 are standard f5 with MP at -6 ( setup 0 ) bottom one is standard f6 MP -6 ( setup 0 )   the wasp pic has been color corected . a little curve added, and a slight boost to the red in the mids. now that i look at it , it looks like its been sharpend a little to me..  :-/    i was playing with the clip, and may have left a sharpen filter on.. it wouldve only been at 10 at the most.. i dont go beyond that so it would only be a subtle difference but  it may have been off and its the compression giving the dotties in the background. it was a really sharp image to start with cause the lense was litterally inches away from the wasp and i waas irised down  cause i didnt bring any NDS and such on the walk.
..i got some shots of my daughter that really look like 35mm on the walk too. but my wife is not to keen about me posting pics of my fam on the web. ..maybe i can talk her into letting me do just one.

Re: some recent grabs

So, for the wasp shot, did you shoot that with the fixed lens at 4x3 and then letterbox it or anamorphic or squeeze or letterbox in camera? :D

Re: some recent grabs

letterbox in cam. it was really run + gun. litterally.. i kept running ahead of the fam, and then shoot them as they came by. then i started walking backwards in front of them and shooting as they walked towards me.. untill i fell backwards off a wood bridge into the marsh.. then i stopped doing that. :P

Re: some recent grabs

Sounds familiar. I did the same thing on my trip to Hurricane Ridge in Washington.

Definitely try to pursuade your wife to post some of those clips   :D

By the way, is there a reason why you don't shoot squeeze mode? Are you working with a 4x3 project in Premiere? When you burn this stuff to DVD, is it 16:9 or 4x3....just curious because I do all of my work using the squeeze mode. I don't think I've even had the camera set to 4x3 or letterbox since I got it.

Re: some recent grabs

..well i dont have the "A" model ..so i dont have squeeze mode ;) . but even if i did have it, i would still shoot in letterbox or plain 4:3 and mask in post.
for the little non-film out potential stuff like this, i use 4:3 projects, and make a 4:3 DVD cause nobody besides myself that i know has a 16:9 display. so it makes it easy. id only lose quality by shooting squeeze just to have the dvd player letterbox it back to 4:3 when i could just shoot letterbox 4:3 to begin with. for the film -out or 16:9 or 2.35:1 projection stuff i still shoot letterbox or 4:3 cause it gives a cleaner transfer to HD or film for projection. and using programs like photozoom pro to upres it to 16:9 for matching with anamorphic footage is way better than the squeeze mode stretch.

all pends though.. if i wanted to make a 16:9 DVD and i had squeeze mode im sure id use it for simplicity sake, and ease of use, cause it does work well. but i havent made a 16:9 dvd yet.. well beyond testing stuff. ;)

Re: some recent grabs

whew im glad im not the only one that thinks that way...

Any reason you don't use F6?

Beautiful shots IAL, last 2 are my favs  ;D

Re: some recent grabs

All great grabs, very nice!
I Particularly like the wasp. Did you use like a 3x close-up lens or what?

Re: some recent grabs

last shot was in F6.. :)
i use 24pa almost all the time unless the project is a small strictly video project and im short on time.  the project that the 1st 3 grabs were from was a short film for a festival. its all digital projection.   I actually wouldve used 24pa but  didnt realy need to. it would all fit on a DVD without being a true 24p dvd, and 24pn gives me the smoothest playback in NTSC, and if im sticking to 29.976 i can use my matrox card, and get a project done alot faster cause i dont wait for rendering. i was pressed for time cause i had 5 projects going at once, so i shot 24pn and used the matrox card.  the project was finished just in time for me to get to fedex right before they closed, and overnight it to submissions.

edit: soliton, it was the standard lense. i was really close, and the wasp was pretty big. ;)

Re: some recent grabs

ahhhh okay. I missed the whole "bottom one is standard f6 MP -6 ( setup 0 )" thing. Damn coffee is getting to my brain.

Re: some recent grabs

That shot of the dock is great! The colors and framing on the wasp shot is also very nice. Damn, I need to stop looking at this stuff while I'm busy. Too distracting and makes me want to go grab some more footage.

Or not getting to your brain! ;)

Re: some recent grabs

great stuff !

The man's cloose up is really neat. I understand it's 4/3 matted at 2,35...nice. WHat about in-camera color tweaking, thoses images are a bit desaturated did you decrease chroma ?

I too use Photozoom pro to uprezz it does quite a nice job but i rreally look toward Graham Natress R&D project about uprezz. Is little app seems to give even better results.
