some questions after a few days...

Ok so, I must say this:

AVID ROCKS! I dont think I'll ever go back to Premiere, and may never go Mac. I freekin love this thing!

I do have some questions/problems tho:

First, how do I delete effects from clips? I know it sounds obvious but I can not for the life of me figure out how to get rid of them!

Second, how do I change the leingths of transitions? (another should be no brainer but for some reason I'm a bit of a blond. with brown hair)

Third, is there a way to apply an effect (the aspect masks specificly) to multiple clips at once?

Fourth, whenever I export my finished cut, the final file is interlaced, not just every 5th frame but every frame. I shot this all in 24pA (DVX), edited it 24pA and my QT export settings are "same as source". Any help?

And finally, what VFX package integrates with MediaComposer best? Obviously not After Effects, but there must be something, seeing as Avid is such a comonly used NLE...

needless to say Premiere has been removed from my computer, and I have wet dreams about avid every night (not really but you get my point).

Thanks for any help,
Dory

1) there should be a "Remove Effect" icon in your timeline. It looks like a circle with a line through it (as in "NO") If it's not there, you can map it to your keyboard or your timeline with the Command Palette (Tools menu, or control 3 I believe.)

2) If it's just a quick transition (cross-fade, dip to black, etc) hit the forward slash (above the enter key) to enter Quick Transition, or click the quick transition in the timeline (looks like a gradient in photoshop). Change the length and placement there. If it's a more complex transition from the effects palette, go into effect mode, and in the bottom of the effect editor window, you should see a type box that is probably defaulted to 1:00. If you hover your mouse over this, it will say Transition Effect Duration. Change this number (use frames. IE, if you type in 15 and hit enter, it will be 15 frames long), and re-render. Or don't re-render if it's a real time effect. You get the point.

3) go into segment mode (red arrow at the bottom of the timeline or the quotation marks key) and select the clips to apply the effect to. Then double click the effect in the effect palette.

4) I have the same problem at times with interlacing footage. My fix (and it may not be the best one. Someone may correct me on this if they would like) is to go into the format button when I export, and under the filter option for the video, turn on blur, and set it to 2. When you back out, the summary will say 5, this is fine. Just go with it. That usually puts enough blur in the image to smooth out the rough interlacing. I've been pretty happy with that workaround for a while. Would love to know if someone has a better solution.

5) I use After Effects. Just export QT references. It's not a seamless as Premiere / AE is (I'm assuming, never actually used Premiere), but it gets the job done.

Cool, thanks for that! When you say CT references, whats that do? Is it a lower quality file, and if so, whats to be done after I work it in AE?

Thanks,
Dory

QT References = Quicktime references files.

A quicktime reference doesn't contain any actual media, just the pointers to the media already on your drive. So, your import into AE comes in at absolute full resolution. Then, export another QT reference out of AE, and bring that back into Avid.

you'll actually render a quicktime with the proper codec to come out of AE but AE does eat QT references fine.
It's Avid's DVD authoring program that can't.
lol

Heres another one, what should I be using for DVD authoring? Is there something that integrates into MC? Or should I just keep using Encore?

Welcome to the dark side my friend. You will find it hard to go back, yet every once in a while you say awwwwwwwww why wont this just work like_____________(insert NLE here.)

Avid has a great tool called Send To profiles which is like a little Macro of export settings and 3rd party launch programs.

You can set this up so that you can hit things like "send to proof" your avid will export your sequence as a ref open Sorenson, automatically encode the file to your proof settings, then upload that file to your ftp proof site for client.

It is a beautiful thing.

Check Out Send TO

Encore will work fine.
Avid has a DVD program they got from Sonic and although they ship it with their Avid software, it does not work as well with Avid as other apps.
lol
I know, ya can't write this stuff.
