Some Pix from Apple Event

What would those have to do with reality? It's basically a mockup.
I'm fully aware it's a mock-up, but this camera was not designed in some vacuum. I'm sure the Panasonic engineers have conducted plenty of research and testing on the actual guts of the system (irregardless of the final form the camera will eventually take). For several weeks now people have been having wet dreams over the camera's specs, it would be kind of nice to see the output. I don't think it's too far fetched to inquire whether sample footage be made available at this stage. If it's not ready, oh well, I can wait. I doesn't hurt to ask.

An anamorphic lens + 16:9 native might be useful for a film blowup. I'm not sure how necessary that is though with 1080p. Even lucas cropped 1080p for starwars.

I can't wait to add an anamrophic lens if possible and also shoot 16x9 together. 2:35:1 or is that 2:37:1............

Us two, we are talking about famous "anamrophic" i.e. 21x7 and a half

;-)

Thanks, but if it SD 16x9 on tape (and that's what they where all talking about), don't reduce the cams low light capability by forcing it to use a HD Chip.

BTW: I heard that the chip is not full 1080... Is that so? can't be!

So basically it's $6000 for the basic camera that doesn't shoot HD, only DV.
If you want to shoot HD it's going to cost you roughly $10,000 because of the cards. And yes you need two or you will be faffing around downloading the P2 cards all the time.
If the cards come right down in price Panasonic will shift a reasonable amount of these.

One thing that struck me was the look of the camera. Not pretty at all. Still, if it does the job (HD 24P) I might consider buying one when the cards get to a sensible price level.

It does shoot HD, it just doesn't record it on-camera at the $6,000 price. You can output uncompressed HD, or capture the firewire stream onto a computer running FCP-HD or Avid Express HD, or stream it to a DVCPRO-HD deck. And there still exists the unconfirmed possibility that it may be able to record direct to hard disk too. And if not, there will likely be a forthcoming FireStore type of device that will record HD.

There's many HD ways you could use the camera, all without any P2 cards.

If you add a P2 card, then you have the ability to record HD on the camera.

Hm I'm really feeling sorry for Barry (and btw. thanks so much for keeping us non-NAB-goers informed! ;o) ... he's again spending countless hours (and postings) on explaining things over and over to all the "n00bs" currently flooding this forum! ;-)
Will you never get tired of it? ;-P

Man... some people (esp. for example my fellow german countryman Philipp) should do their homework first and study all the relevant sites (Adam Wilt & Co.) and some of the threads here in dvxuser/24puser.com that already extensively explain some of the basic principles as progressive vs. interlaced, recording progressive frame in an interlaced stream using pull-down/-up etc.pp. ... *sigh*
And please people... stop the $6000-for-a-camera-that-doesn't-shoot-HD-only-DV-as-long-as-I-don't-buy-several-P2-cards-for-thousands-of-$$$ like postings and threads... it's starting to become spam like!!!

Barry, can you find out or if you already know. Can you record the different frame rates uncompressed to a hard drive?

Also what would be the major difference if you could uncompress the different frame rates vs. the compressed frame rates?

There is no uncompressed recording at all, on any of these cameras. Uncompressed would require over 166 megabytes per second sustained data rate.

If you did have a system that could handle that, and you had a proper uncompressed-HD capture card, then you could capture the output, and it would look like variable frame rates, but it would be recorded in a 60p stream.

As to your second question, I don't understand what you're asking...

Sorry about the second question. Was writing quick to go to the store.

I just wanted to know if there would be any advantage of just shooting slow-motion, etc uncompressed visually?

Well, the thing is, sure uncompressed would be better than compressed, but what are you going to do with it? Do you have a way to capture a 166-megabyte-per-second data stream? A gigabyte going by in 7 seconds? If so, yes you could get uncompressed quality. But I think for 99.9999999% of the users of any of these cameras, that's just not a practical option. Maybe a few years from now though!

Barry,

How do these cameras *OUTPUT* raw data? Obviously not firewire. Is there a special port that you have to hook up to on the camera in order to get the raw output?

Also, I'm assuming you'd need some sort of PCI card or plugin card to receive the raw data.....and a RAID system to write the data to. Correct?

Please explain, how this *could* be done if the 0.0000001 of us actually tried to do it. Not like I actually will, but I'm interested in "knowing how" in case I ever get a whim to capture some RAW HD footage. Thanx,

~reservoir~

It would be through the component out, which is really meant for monitoring. But its analog, not SDI. So its not really practical for capturing.

This is a speculation of course, just like a lot of other things about this
prototype camera is.

From the pics Ive seen I like this cam, but the color does need to be a dark gray or all black. The mock up under the sheet looked like a bigger cam.[font=&quot]

None of these cameras support a direct digital output of the HD data (meaning, HD-SDI, for example). There may be some option in the future, I don't know, but right now you'd have to capture the analog component signal and digitize that.

Well, it might no be worth to get P2 now. But it will drop and when it's affordable, P2 is a much better solution. More portable, more stable, silent, practical. When P2 is affordable enough to get loads of them and in bigger sizes, P2 will be the way to go.

Well, I mean, how do you want prizes to drop if you don't buy P2 cards right
now. Suppose everybody thinks that way, cards' production numbers will not
increase and thus prizes will remain stable - where they are right now. That's
how the market works. Think about it!
