Some Pix from Apple Event

My understanding of Vegas is that it is format independent. That means that a third party capture (like they have been doing for HDV) is all you need to get the data in. That is also why you can edit audio and video in a million different formats. So odds are high that SOny will NOT shoot itself in the foot by making DVCPROHD format incompatible. And adding it as an accepted format is really easy, so they will probbaly do it themsleves rather than have a third party do it. It would be cool if they announce it in Vegas 6 this week.

The only disappointment I have is that I have to wait until q4 for the HDX200. I guess that means I have to buy a DVX100 now to tide me over. Anyword on what the DVX100b will include, besides ecological updates?

It's lead-free, so I guess it's ok if a baby eats one. :) I think Jan stated that there aren't any additional upgrades.

Last I remember, Jan said that "lead-free" was all she could say about it. I am still hopeful for 16x9 chips. LOL

No. Two 2-GB cards would give you 10 minutes of 720p24 and 4 minutes of 1080p24. You would need two 8-GB cards for the recording times you specified, and they will cost about $4,000 for a pair when they are introduced.

I think he was meaning Two 2G (As in 2 GRAND. The 8GB cards are *supposed* to be 2Grand Each when they debut) Cards....Not Two 2GB Cards. Just trying to help clarify.

PS - Just on a personal note. For $5995 and a 2GB P2 card....I could make it work out nice for me. I will only be shooting 1-2 minute narrative takes....so if I can get a 2GB card for less than 1000...I'd go that route too. Just an idea.

Hi Folks-

Wow. What an exciting day. As I mentioned again this camera has completely allayed my fears about P2. If you just buy the camera and don't want P2- you'll be just fine. Any firewire or USB-2 drive that can handle the 100Mbit data rate will work. It does not need to be a Firestore or other DV specific drive. The engineers have reported using it with an Ipod for example. So there's nothing to fear here. If the worst we can complain about is looks- bring it on.

Noah

PS- chips are indeed 16:9 native though 1/3". When you shoot DV you are getting an HD downconvert on the fly to tape. That means the standard DV picture should completely blow away all other prosumer SD cameras- such as oh say the XL2...

AMEN to that!!

Looks be DAMNED.....this is great camera OUT OF THE BOX!!

My only other question / concern is: Can they release it near the release date of the JVC in July? Everyone else seems to think October / November. Darn....that's a lifetime in this business to wait!!

Do you need a special bios for the drive? I've got an external hd, what exactly would I need to get footage from the cam directly onto it?

WooHoo! That is seriously the best news that has been reported to date.

P2 is the future, but not for my budget now. I can't wait until the price drops because it will be the bizzie. But hooking up a firwire or USB drive will be so awesome.

And for the record, this thing could look like a big dirty pig baking in the microwave for all I care. I just want to see the output. When was the last time you looked at a digital photo and thought, "Man that printer is ugly?" I think it's only been the focus because we can't see the images yet.

Thanks Noah! Unbelievable. Recording to a client's iPod--now that's a trip.

That is great news!

Can anybody recommend some good HDD's that are fast, rugged and run off batteries (or USB2 power supplies). I would love to get one that I can clip on my belt for run and gun situations. Or maybe some company makes a rugged enclosure that you can just plug in regular 2.5" drives. That would be sweet, too.

BTW Noah, were the Panny guys recording HD to ipod?

Plug it in--that's it. You've got to have power for the drive, although I wonder if the HVX firewire and USB2 ports will provide power.

Voilla !!

What?!?

What?!?

WHAT!??!

Are you absolutely sure about this? I can plug in a maxtor firewire drive or lacie firewire drive and it will know when to record when I hit the record button?? Direct to standard firewire HDD? Seriously? I don't believe it.

Smack me in the face and tell me thats what you mean. :)

Are you positive? That's amazing! Why buy a p2 card then? I've bought a 300gb extern. for like $230, that's a LOT of time to record. A p2 card only supplies you with what? Like 16 minutes of 720 and 4 of 1024? Is that correct? It's not worth spending 4 times as much for 75x less the amount of space.

This camera is going to give me a heartattack. No more need for re-capturing, now that is awesome.

Ugh, 6 months away and still in debt for my dvx *sigh*

When you record to P2, it just records folders of video. It'll do the same over firewire to a hard drive.

WOW Noah,
thanks for keeping us all updated!

That's the best news I've heard all day/night

By the way, if anyone is interested, I've been listing all the news I hear, along with links and pictures, on a site I put together today:

http://videoindie.blogspot.com

Nothing fancy, like I said, I just put it together today.

Thanks to everyone at NAB for keeping us informed.

Well if this is true, then that's excellent. Just need a nice way to attach to the camera and you're away. Saving LOTS of money!
