Some of my Merlin footage

So I'm working on a short film and some of my actors are into Krumping (which is a cross between Moshing and Breakdancing). I filmed them Krumping to maybe throw in during credits or whatever.

Haven't perfected the Merlin yet but I'm working on it. At the bottom of the page is also a rough cut of a scene in which I used the Letus Filp as well as the Merlin (not together of course).

Here is some more merlin footage. This one has a little more movement.

I like the work.

I have had my merlin for just over a week and it's taking some practice. Balancing the dvx100b I have takes some time - but the merlin does give some nice staeadicam footage for sure.

I have a charity running event to film in 2 weeks so am getting in some practice as it'll all be catching moving people.

Any folks got any routines they use to practice learning steadicam? Or a top 10 crash course / tips (beyond the manual) to using a merlin would be great right now :-)

the motion in this footage looks really promising.

is this with the merlin arm and vest, or just the merlin itself?

One thing that helps is learning how to roll your steps, so that you take as much of the jolt out of your gait as possible. At University, one of the exercises I came up with was filling a glass of water to the brim, holding it with your arm extended all the way out in front of you, and walking as quickly as you could without spilling the water. This forces you to learn how to roll your steps and keep your hips level. The less you have to depend on the stabilizer, the smoother your shots will be.

You don't need the Vertical CG distance to balance. - It efers to how high up within the camera it's center of mass is - the higher it is, the more "leverage" or "effect" it has on the rest of the system. But again, that is used for creatin cookbook settings, not actually for balancing from them.

Start (or continue an old thread) in one of the hardware sections of the forum and we can go over balancing details and I can help you troubleshoot without hijacking this thread.
