C100: Soft static when used with Sony Wireless kit

I've recently noticed a soft, but present static noise when I use my Sony UWP wireless kits with the C100 through the two XLR inputs. No such noise is present when I use them with the zoom H4N.

However, when recording with the transmitter directly plugged into the 1/8th input on the c100, bypassing the handle extension entirely, the noise wasn't present.

Also when I use the c100 handle with the RODE NTG1 w/ phantom power, there is no such noise.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I have the same problem - I have the Sony URX-UTX model. Thinking it was the C100 I actually had the handle replaced- but the noise has reappeared. I think it's a earthing problem with the cables. I tried the UTX on a EX1 - no buzz. If you hook up via a mixer their is no buzz... which suggests that its something to do with the c100/UTX combo... looks like its back to the dealer.

What are your settings on the C100 handle in terms of gain and input type? If the gain is much below 4, you might be artificially amping up the noise floor of the receiver. If you are set to phantom power, you might also be getting static. I know that the Sennheiser G3 gains a hiss when you are feeding phantom power back into the output.

Gain is set to 5. Mic input which is all normal. I'm sure its an earthing/wiring issue otherwise it would buzz when the input is from the mixer as well. No issues with any other mic i.e. wired lav or shotgun. No buzz on EX1.

Just did another test connecting receiver to another XLR cable and then into the c100. No buzz! It must be the wireless cable (3.5 to XLR)

I've experienced this problem as well on both C100 and C100 mkii and been frustrated by it, but blamed it on the receivers themselves. Glad to hear that's apparently not the case! Any idea if the 3.5mm-XLR out could be replaced with another generic cable?

With further thought it would seem the problem may be related with the c100 - i.e. a wiring/polarity issue. Otherwise you would have the same issue with other cameras. I swapped the cable from my now defunct URX system but no change. I have a short xlr cable that I have attached to the wireless cable and that has sorted the problem. I do not have test equipment so will need to get a proper tech guy to sort it out properly

It's poor design/understanding of how professional gear is used professionally on Canons part. The C300 has the same type issue. It's bad grounding/power filtering. I have to power my 300, accessories and wireless all separately. It's a total pain in the @$$. I'm used to being able to power everything attached to my "real cameras", even my F55, with ONE attached battery. So I have to have Canon batteries to power the body, an attached A/B to power the VF and or on-cam external monitor and recorder(if using one) AND if I need wireless, 9V's(or little Sonys) for the batt sled adapter for a Lectro receiver.

Hell, I don't even have to go wireless to get audio issues. If I power the camera and an accessory from the same source(A/B battery) even hard wired to a mixer I'll get buzz/hum.

I use these all the time when doing karaoke gigs-

This will kill-off the constant cyclic hum not hiss, that's a gain issue as previously mentioned.

I've had this issue in the past with the C100mkII and Sony wireless receivers. The solution is to switch out the Sony 3.5mm to XLR cable for another manufacturer's. I've had no issues using cables from several other manufacturers, but Sony's (I tried several) all exhibited this same issue when used in combination with the C100mkII.

I've had a similar issue. The was the 3.5mm -> XLR cable that came with the Sony set.
Used a cable from a Sennheiser set and had no issues.

Another weird quirk -> I had a beeping when I was recording as well (with the cable that came from the sony set), which only happened with Duracell 200X cards. (took me a month or two to figure out where the beeping was coming from!!!)
