I am looking for a good soft case to use as a carry-on for my camera. Has anyone used Kata? what would you suggest? I kinda of like backpack style but want decent protection for my gear. Thanks

kata cc-193

i just got my hmc150 and ordered a kata cc-193 case for it.

while i haven't had a chance to actually use it, i'm really happy with my purchase.
the bag is big enough to fit the camera and all essential accessories, yet small enough (like small duffel bag) to fit in the overhead on a plane. there's plenty of room for a matte box, mics, batteries, charger, xlr cable, etc.

it also has great padding, and while it is soft compared to a pelican, it has plenty of rigid structure to protect your gear. it also has movable velcro walls to create custom spaces inside the bag. it has a convenient outside strap thing that you can use to slip the bag over the handle of a wheeled carry-on. and the shoulder strap is ergonomic and super-comfy.

i also like that the bag is not flashy and doesn't scream "i'm carrying expensive camera equipment in here!"

its also water proof. i found mine for about $100.

I used a Lowepro AW/DV for two years of constant travel on planes with my DVX100B (same size as HMC150) and it is excellent especially for run and gun. Lots of pockets, fits in 90%of overhead bins and under most seats if you don't overload it. I was able to carry it on most flights while wearing a Targus backpack with my Macbook Pro in it. I did this for two years everywhere in North America and to the Caribean. I am not sure if I would have gotten away with both in Europe. But it is a great camera bag if you want another option from the backpack type. Since I am doing much less run and gun(get off the plane and shoot stuff) my HMC now travels in a Thermodyne and I bought a used one for the DVX as well.

I love the kata rolling cases... very nice. I also love the lowepro backpack. Great for all your accessories and a breeze to carry on location. I have both and use the rolling case when I have a lot of gear and can use it also as a dolly to carry extra stuff. If however I am out in the wild or on a real run and gun job.. then I use the lowepro backpack.
