So whos got a HVX look yet?

I've heard of presets that give the A1 a DVX/HVX film look but I haven't seen much footage. Anybody got a good clip I can see showing me this preset? I'm interested just how close they look.

I don't think that looks like film. Maybe it's the compression that's killing the image?

click the link that allows you to watch it in 720P. Im not saying the entire piece looks like film, but in my opinion there is deff shot that do.

The A1 is never going to look exactly like an HVX, just like I don't think an HVX can look exactly like the best from an A1. The camera's just have a different quality. But if you're looking for very naturalistic color and a generally rich look, check out Disjecta's many pieces shot with his PanaLook preset. Scharky's stuff along the Puget Sound shore was pretty awesome too.

I do think they're very much like different film stocks. You can only emulate so much because the lenses, sensors and DSP's are completely different.

well, i would say that my short film looks pretty film-like... But maybe you would disagree, so watch it and let me know what you think:

I liked this. I don't know if it looked like film, mostly because of the blown out sky which is a video trademark. However, I thought it looked really good and the cinematography added to the mood. Also, one thing that took me out of it was that he kept looking through the shutter at the murderers long after it was obvious they had seen him. Other than that, I thought it was pretty good.

Is a 2:35:1 matte the new thing now? Just wondering.

ive always done theh 2.35:1 matte in all my "film" projects. Why? Because:

1. It gives you more levrage to frame your shots, if a boom mic appears, or a camera man shadow (which often does with run n gun indie shooting) you have room to slide it around and get rid of it.

2. MOST film now adays is in that aspect ratio, so it adds to style. I want my A1 footage to feel as much like fillm as obtainable

And let me note, normally after framing my shots in Gordian knott i then crop out the black mask so when viewed it looks like TRUE 2.35:1.

True, but you are losing a lot of your image by doing this. All you have to do in order to avoid a mic in frame is use a monitor with underscan during production, it really helps. And runnin' and gunnin' problems, it just doesn't seem worth losing a lot of the frame to avoid this. It's not like true anamorphic photography where you get a 2:1 squeeze, in fact there is no squeeze and unsqueeze for this type of work, where you'd at least get a wider landscape. But that's cool, I might try this with a couple shots myself.

What do you mean by this? You can play it on a widescreen tv as you would any 2:35 movie? Thanks t-h-e w-h-o.

^yes, you can play it just like a normal 2351 movie because it is now "true" cinema scope when the mask crop is applied.

dont knock it till ya try it ;) You just may end up liking the feel. In my opinion the A1'S vivid 1440x1080 is pleanty of rez/pixels for me even when masked a bit.

Well, I wasn't really knocking it as I previously stated that I may try it. I am just curious as to why this is being done a lot lately. So, ok. Thanks for the clarifications.

Why it doesnt look like film - not a trace of lighting. A graduated ND or polariser would have kept the sky blue and get cleaner exposure levels. Im not critisizing, people are saying it doesnt look like film and Im jus throwing out some reasons.
