I sat and waited for the XL2 to be announced. Finally, the day is here and I saw the specs. I just got off the phone with Rush. I have a DVX100A on its way as we speak!

Don't get me wrong, guys. It's not that the XL2 doesn't look like a great cam... it just didn't have enough to steer me away from the DVX.

All I had was a consumer camera. For years I have wanted the xl1. Then the xl1s but when the time came I went with DVX100a. Not sorry I did. I see Panasonic as the inovator/Leader and Cannon as playing catch up. I bought a Cannon AE1 program SLR years ago. It never failed me and I love the lenses I had. Cannon was the leader then. HD will have to see who will step up to the plate. It won't be too long for that. We just have to wait and see. Panasonic has my money and I am a very happy customer.

Hmmm ... I've been looking into buying either the XL-2 and the DVX100a. Some problems I am personally concerned about wrt the XL-2 are as
follows:
1) Lots of complaints regarding the Auto Lens on the XL-1s.
The complaints are comprised of backfocus issues and the
inability of the lens to maintain focus, that is to say that it
seems to continuously/intermittently "hunt" for focus.
2) Various complaints regarding the tape/transport and firewire
port on the unit combined with complaints regarding Canon's level
of Customer Service.
Questions regarding the lenses ability to find and hold focus are critical.
I am quite concerned regarding this issue. Since, I aspire to be a nature
videographer, the idea of substituting the 16X manual lens for the 20X
auto is unappealing. This would limit my focal length to 68mm ( 16:9)
I would really like to find a way to expand the DVX to something like 90mm.
This would make me very happy ... ;D
DVX owners seem to have no complaints regarding the quality of their cameras. The quality of the video clips I have seen on this board is
simply phenomenal. ;D
Since I have no urgent need to purchase a camera, I will sit and wait for
awhile. Will continue to learn, listen, and try to take both cameras out for a test drive before I purchase.

The DVX is amazingly comprehensive, it's hard to find something to complain about (excepting wishing there was a longer reach to the telephoto). The DVX's focus ring isn't technically a true mechanical focus ring, but it sure acts like one.
As for 90mm, you'd need a 2:1 teleconverter and there isn't one that I know of. You can get to 72mm easily (with the Century Optics 1.6) but it carries a $700 pricetag and can't zoom out any wider than about Z60. A true 2x teleconverter that doesn't vignette and performs as good as Century would be most welcome. Seeing as the DVX's been out for nearly two years now and none has appeared, I doubt there will ever be one, but I sure wish there was!

The DVX tells you the position of the lens in its zoom range, using a 100-point scale. So Z00 is full wide-angle, and Z99 is full telephoto, and Z60 is just a point along the way.

Well a lot of things about the xl2 are yet to be announced like the feature to download setting directly to the camera I think its sort of the same deal they had with the pd150 and xl1 they both are like apples and oranges, like they say you can have millions of dollars of equipment but you might not be able to utilize them to their ability no matter what camera you choose I think you will be able to get great results if you know what you are doing by either.

I have both a DVX100A and the original XL1. Have to say, I've loved the XL1. It's been a real work horse, consistant images and very reliable. The DVX felt a little more flimsy right from the start. I had a lot of concerns. But as I'm about to deliver my first broadcast show shot on my DVX, I really am amazed with the images. A hell of a lot of color correcting (need to get those red settings worked out), but really tasty footage. I also like the fact that it is a little more portable. The XL1 is a real solid build though and if the XL2 is the same with 16x9 it is tempting - though that whole servo lens crap has got to go. I think the DVX will stay for some time, but I will surely keep my eyes, ears and mind open to the XL2.

I have the standard lens that came with the camera (not the manual lens). Can never do a proper pull-focus, for the servo continues to rotate and you can't set markings. It does have a smother zoom than the DVX though.
