So, should we wait for the huge price drop?

perhaps a quick newb question based on something i heard...

will the hvx play nice with FCP 4.5 or did i totally read something wrong this late at night?

peace.

DVCPROHD is maximum 1280x1080 at 1080p.
So do you think that European version, which should have 1440x1080 at 1080p, will have different chips or do they just record more pixels without having more resolving power?

Both are possible. You can sample a CCDat any rate. If you design for 1440, you can sample for both 1440 and 1280, and 1440 will be higher res of course. If you design for 1280, the 1440 sampling will be slightly better for technical reasons due to the higher rate, but the resolution will be the same.

Normally you cover the worst case and design for 1440. Having just one camera and changing firmware should be more cost effective. But I dunno about the DVCPRO block. Perhaps that has to be different physically so you won't save that much:)

a) that test was of course with a certain temperature.... there are also cold deserts, so why do you call it "crap" without knowing the conditions of the test? (102 degrees) The point is, that P2 systems are less temperature sensitive than tape-based systems. And sometimes it's just enough to leave the camera in a closed car under direct sunlight... I didn't say that you can't film in the desert with non-P2 cameras, but I said, that P2 lasts longer if the conditions start to get too hard for tape-based cameras... if you read my post carefully, you will find the word "when" - this doesn't mean in any case, but the moment the other cameras stop recording, the P2-cam will go on. Depending on condition. Jan mentioned that "bake" test that you can read here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showpost.php?p=336417&postcount=24 and this test runs at 102 degrees. Still crap?

Yes. First, 102 degrees is actually considered mild here. The kind of weather you can run around all day in. 115 is average in the summer, and we've seen 122 in the past (airports close). What you seem to overlook is that the P2 card needs a life support system... the camera. This camera has the same operational limitations as any other camera, so there is no advantage here, unless you can figure out how to take video with a P2 card all by itself. My suggestion is that we stick to the bottom line and not buy into semantic hype that ultimately means nothing. You may disagree.

b) same issue: depending on the conditions, a P2-camera CAN BE very silent, as we have been told here in this forum - so YES, WE DO KNOW THIS ONE YET. Usually tape-based cameras both make noise and if you use built-in mic then some of them even record that noice. When I talk about the advantages of P2, of course I don't talk about recording on a hd. The HVX running with P2is silent. It's YOU making it loud if you attach a fan cooled device on it. It's like using a cheap 35mm-adapter on the HVX and then say: the HVX's optics sucks! The hd is not part of the HVX.

In the short term, many of us see the HD recorder as an outright requirement to shooting in HD with the HVX, since recording times on the current (expensive) P2 cards is too short... so yes I'd have to disagree that it isn't part of the HVX. Once we have affordable 64GB cards then you are right. Again, my suggestion is that we avoid philosophical and statistical comparisons that ultimately mean very little. And again, you may disagree.
