So, should we wait for the huge price drop?

After the HVX did crash and burn in the first comparision test, Panasonic won't be able to keep the price for long when the results spread. I mean, it was easily beaten by those "cheap" HDV cameras, why should we pay so much? Just because of the better colors and some variable frame rates (and the latter does not even work for the PAL model)? And not to talk about the pricey storage solution. I mean, a 1080p camera that does hardly resolve more than SD? Come on. I wonder what Panasonic did wrong.

Besides, the footage I downloaded still looks great.

Pascal, to much coffee this morning ? :)

You right, just because the HVX200 has better colors and produces a better
picture doesn't mean anything.

It makes me wonder if the HVX-200 is using the same chips as the DVX and the image is just upsampled in the DSP before outputting the image? That would explain the lower resolving ability of the camera compared to HDV cameras as well as Panasonic absolutely refusing to divulge the CCD specs.

Hey js33 are you smoking crack??
If people would open there eyes and compare
crack to crack you would see the HVX produces
far and away the best video in this class of cameras.
I have seen HDV and I could not shoot the kind of
video I shoot and deliver a decent video with HDV.
Please go to Sony HDV site and download the
WMV HD files and look at them in comparision to the
stuff that has been posted for the HVX and then tell me
which is "better". Plus all the decent Canon footage was
recorded directly from the camera head to a PANASONIC
1200 DVCPRO HD deck. I guess even Canon knows that
HDV sucks. Heh Heh

But guess what? The DECENT Canon footage, as you put it, wasn't recoreded to a DVCproHD codec. More than one post on here dubbing the DVCProHD codec a noisey little bastich.

That canon footage was DV100... hmm. I guess we really SHOULD see a DVCproHD vs HDV comparison, now shouldn't we?

Pft.

mmm....

So if andromeda can pull HD equivalent stuff out of DVX chips.... maybe Pana can do a better job of upressing with the same chips and rebrand it as HVX?

Yes,

There's been a lot of talk about HDV verses DVCPROHD.

I have seen some real nice HDV footage, but the image appears to go soft with movement. I know this has been brought up over and over, but from what I'm seeing is frame independent picture quality looks better with movement.

I was "on the fence" for a while trying to decide if the HVX was the best route.
Well, the rez specs are confusing, and now a bit conflicting, but regardless, it produces decent footage.

Michael pappas has seen the HVX200 footage blown up for 35mm and said it looked really good.

True, Steve(t).

I'm super new to all of this, but I read a lot of posts and articles, and I've already taken into account that both of these cameras don't produce thirty-million dollar results.

The HVX200 has quite a pretty picture...
While the XLH1 has quite a grande resolution scale.

As for 35mm blow up, hell, I could care less. How many of us are actually going to transfer any of our movies to film in the next year or so?

Such an idea is for those whom have a large budget and are already planning to show silver screen, not home theatre.

Everyone should be looking at the NOW picture more than the LATER picture. Most of the work is going to DVD, not HD-DVD or Blu_Ray. That being said, both cameras are good.

HDV isn't HORRID, and though I respect the opinions of those whom say it is, it really isn't and that's the bottom line.

DVCproHD isn't PERFECT, and while it can and probably will be improved upon, it's noisey right now and won't be satisfying to a good lot of people.

Too many people are backing the HVX200 simply out of loyalty to a brand name. If that's what you want to do, then fine, so be it. Justify all of it's short comings and use the short comings of other cameras to make it seem better.

Want proof of my accusation? Go read all the topics on noise, resolution, etc. So many excuses, so many unsatisfied people.

Maybe everyone got their hopes up way too high?

Yes there is some outfit that altered the DVX to HD res so maybe using the DVX chips doesn't really matter. I mean this camera is a hybrid anyway. We take the basic electronics from the DVX and throw in the codec and some frame rates from the Varicam and poof we have the HVX.

But resolution aside I still believe the HVX has the best image going compared to the HDV stuff I have seen especially when the camera moves.

OK, so let me get this right. I can take my DVX apart, get to the chips, take a chisel and lengthen them to 16x9 native (HVX Chips). And then I will go to Miranda or Kona and get an SD to HD converter. Tape it on the back of my DVX. Then I will get an HDDVC pro deck to hook up to the converter, and rig some kind of battery to power it all. And Wow I got me the New DVXHVX2 Million Camera. I don't need to buy another one. Like my dad always says, use what you have lying around first. Oh Crap I forgot that the DVX dosen't do variable frame rates like the HVX well I'll figure something out. Be sides who use different frame rates. You are just supposed to shoot in 29.97 rights?

The HVX is a Different camera what do you not see about that?

Wow... well put Kholi.

I'm sure there are a lot of loyal Panny fans here. How could there not be, just look how well the DVX did.

Yes, there has been a lot of posts regarding noise and rez.
Granted some by me. It's my belief, this is the feedback and concerns design engineers need. Obviously, there's a point of saturation, but everyones thoughts are very important.

I work in a high tech field and if it wasn't for everyone working together sharing their ideas and concerns, we would not exsist today.

As far as the noise concerns, there are apparent settings, not just gain, that can minimize noise. I'm seeing some low light frame grabs at Kaku's web site that looked clean.

I've only been with this forum for around 4 months and I'm blown away with how well the community works here. This is the real thing man. This is the type of input Panasonic can follow. Just look at our moderators here, very professional and know their stuff!

Man, when the thread for camera results hit here, I could not believe the amount of feedback that happened in ONE day! This site is connecting the world with Panasonic, simply amazing!

Yes it is. I'm just saying it's not inconceivable that they are using the DVX chips as the DVX has a 16x9 mode as well. There was some guys that retrofitted the DVX to HD awhile back so it is possible.

Also I said they took some things from the DVX and borrowed a few things from Varicam (variable frame rates and the DVCpro codec). Now if they had only taken the 2/3" chips from it as well. :>)

Yes but you have to admit that Panasonic is being too secretive about the HVX chips compared to HDV camera makers.

But in the end the image is the most important thing.

Js33, you want to take your DVX and use it as a still camera? And then put the clips together in an editor, or special software? Because that is what that DVX HD system basically dose. And if you ask me having to be tethered to a computer on every shoot is a pain in the butt. Most of the time, I can’t stand being tethered to a monitor and audio. And about the resolution I don't think we are getting it right yet. I think Berry and Adam are very gifted engineers, and I trust them more then any other on this board. But even Berry will say that reading charts by default is a subjective task at best. Some of us have had the camera for two months, some for a day. It took me a year before I felt I knew absolutely everything about my SDX900, and I shoot with that thing every day. Now I could build one in my garage. All I am saying is there is know way the footage would compare with the other camera if it was more the 250 to 300 lines lower then the other camera. That just doesn’t seem to make sense. The image would look far worse. Just my 2 cents

Yeah, I agree - personally I think it's a bad move for them to keep the specs secret because it leads to ridiculous speculations. Since the day of the camera's release I've been saying I think they should release the chip specs, especially if they want the camera to be taken seriously as a professional tool. I can't think of any other professional camera where the manufacturer won't release the full specs.

Same goes for Canon and their 24F mode. They're keeping that under wraps.
Though I suppose they could more easily make some sort of 'proprietary technology' argument.

But even without knowing the specs of the CCD, to say that they might be the same chips as the DVX seems laughable.
After a minute of shooting with the HVX it becomes clear that we're dealing with a different camera.
