So, should we wait for the huge price drop?

js33, you've got five posts here, and almost all of them are to push this absolutely disproven ridiculous rumor.

If you want facts, fact is the chips are 16x9 and the HVX's standard-def 16x9 image is way, way higher res than the DVX's standard-def 16x9 image.

And its 16x9 high-def image is way way WAY higher than the DVX's standard-def 16x9 image.

And it does 720/60p -- something the DVX chips could not possibly do.

So please stop trying to push an unfounded piece of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. The HVX is a legitimately high-def camera delivering approximately twice the vertical resolution of the DVX in 16x9 mode.

Hi Barry,

I have no agenda and I'm not trying to push anything. I was just wondering that's all. But if you read the post below from the other thread you were talking with Pertierr about he kinda backs up the same thing I was saying.

Actually, even a 4:3 EIA chart should give accurate vertical and horizontal results in TVL units. TVL's are based on image height, and as such, as long as the chart is framed correctly on the top and bottom margins(like barry has done), should yield accurate TVL results in both axes.

The camera is no doubt mediocre as far as horizontal resolution, specially for a camera that has been marketed as 1080 capable! The horizontal results match those of the DV output of the DVX100.

This is how rumors get started.
Next thing you know we're going to be reading all over other forums that the HVX has the same chips as the DVX.

Juan's comments are in reference to horizontal res - not to the entire chip.
(edited to add: and as barry pointed out, it was not a fully informed comment either)

The HVX is NOT using the same chips as the DVX.
I can't believe this topic has even gone on this long.

That's before he saw the chart though.

The horizontal numbers in no way match the DV output of the DVX on the same chart.

I'll post a DVX chart when I get back later tonight.

I know how marketing works as I've put up with ridiculous speed claims and over enhancements in the computer industry for years. I know the video industry is about the same as far as overinflating specs, maybe even worse, but Panasonic should be more forthcoming with info. I don't want to be the guy who started the visicous rumor, hehehe, as I don't even care if the resolution is not quite as good as the Canon. All I care about is the final quality and appeal of the image. While I enjoyed the look of your footage of the karate guy there just hasn't been enough other footage out there yet to get a good idea of what the camera can do.

Also the fact that Panasonic only delivered a handful of cameras and then seemed to stop shipping seems a bit troubling.

No but I did watch the recreation made in Lightwave by Dale Myers which brought up some interesting questions. Does that count?

Umm, the DVX has 4x3 native chips, HVX 16x9. Forget trying to figure out the pixel count, that is all you have to konw to see that this theory is completely IMPOSSIBLE!. Please, move on.

And yes, please wait for a price drop. If you are truly hung up on numbers, Panasonic bashing, or simple won't just choose ANOTHER CAMERA, then continue to wait for a price drop, the HVXb, or the Second Coming. Don't forget, RED is gonna kick it's ass in a short while, wait for that too.

Meanwhile the rest will get the camera they need now (HDV or HVX, either way), start making some money, and have the camera paid for 4 times over by the time everyone else finishes waiting.

If you have no need for a camera right now, then save your money. If you need a camere in the near future then look at the prices/features and fit one of the choices into your budget.

I don't think anyone is thrilled with the HVX's performance in the 4 cam test but most of the professionals who had this camera on their radar was not because they believed it would have the highest resolution (certainly hoped it would). If resolution is your sole factor for getting a camera, your Canon is waiting for you. Enjoy!

Cheers

Well resolution aside I would like to see actual footage compared side by side of each camera instead of shooting res charts all day.

So when will we ever see actual footage compared of the 4 competing cameras?

I notice on the Mac websites that the supergeeks had already taken apart one of the new Intel Macs to study the guts. Well, there are at least a hundred of us that visit DVXuser on a regular basis, (and probably more), so why don't we each kick in 50 or 60 bucks, let Jared or Barry buy an HVX solely for autopsy purposes, take it apart, see what the heck kinda chip is in there? I'm only half kidding; if we took one apart, would that clear up the intrigue?

Yeah, I know, the truth hurts. Last place behind the HDV cameras after all the hype? Come on.

Ok thanks for stopping by.
We haven't had a comical troll stop by in a while.

If you would have went to VideoTex on Friday you could have seen the video that Barry shot in the desert and a three panel of a Z1, HVX and the JVC. The HDV cameras could not compare in the motion dept. Unless you plan on shooting test charts in a studio for a living then please get yourself informed. Heh Heh

My HVX will be here soon, and honestly I dont know if I buy into the hype or not. I dont honestly care how much "better" it is than the HDVs, so long as those who hire me Believe in what I can do with it. In the end they all make a pretty picture in a professionals hands. Under a "microscope" Im sure the engineers can debate, but the other 99% of the world wont care about debating the resolution differences, as long as it is used by an artist who understands how to get the most of it, and the end product is well done.

Oh, and I know I never have to digitize again.

This is crazy. The six way shoot out is very interesting and had some interesting results, but to take that as the last word on the some type of pro-sumer HD ranking is just crazy. When I read that article, I was as just as excited as I was before. The bottom line is visual artists have a new set of tools for visual expression, the likes of which, I do not believe have ever been seen. To me the only valid conclusion that was reached in Adam's article, was why the Varicam and F900 were not $60,000 and $100,000 better.

Besides, I have never met a client that hired me for what my camera could do, they have all hired me for what I can do with my camera.

Man, do all you guys talk about resolution all the time? I think I saw only one post on this thread regarding color and the way the image looks.

Call me crazy, but I'd rather take something that looks more filmic and has way better colors and less resolution than a camera that has great resolution but lacks in the actual image.

I don't have much loyalties towards one or the other, but all of the Canon stuff I've seen (mind you, not H1, just the XL-1 and XL-2) didn't look as pleasing to the eye as the DVX footage I've seen (if you can somehow find the short film HUSK, you will see really what a DVX could do.) Maybe that subconsciously pledges my loyalty to HVX (from what i've heard, a hi def DVX) and makes me suspicious of the H1 (i'm going to assume a hi def XL2 with some bells and whistles). Resolution be damned.

"comical"? So you don't mind paying 6000$+ for a camera coming out last in the test? We just can hope that the test is well, just wrong.
