So once again: 1080 usable or not?

All I can tell you is that an associate and I just shot a quick project for a client with the EX1 as the A-Camera and the GH1 as B-Camera. Both the EX1 and GH1 were at 1080p settings, and both look spectacular.

On the GH1 I could see very, very small areas that might be considered "mud," but honestly, you'd only see it if you were looking for it (aka pixelpeeping frame-by-frame). In the context of "moving pictures," you'd likely never notice. The GH1 footage overall is so amazingly sharp, and has such beautiful contrast and DOF (shot with the Olympus 50mm macro lens), even this tiny bit of "mud" would never make the footage "unusable."

As for "blocking artifacts" I saw none, either in 1080p or in 720p. From my experience, this is a non-issue.

The EX1 (shooting to the Nano Flash) obviously offers better options (more latitude) for color-grading in post, but the GH1 footage held up surprisingly well on its own.

What is "That". You have to provide the context.

Blocking is definitely an issue. Less of an issue if you lower the saturation in camera and correctly reverse telecine (assuming you are shooting 24p).

It can be color corrected, it just doesn't stand up well to color correction. Worse than a lot of HDV cameras in my experience.

With that being said - you can definitely shoot a feature with it, and make it look great. Just know the weaknesses of the camera.

Those weaknesses got to me and I sold the camera. If I didn't already own a 5d mark II I would not have sold the GH1 and would have marveled at its capabilities.

Blocky color are abundant, but know your camera and it will be alright. The less saturated the colors, the better. Also - don't have any actors in bright red clothing. Avoid bright red at all costs.

Go shoot an awesome movie!

>Im very worried about using GH-1 in places like this: http://www.vimeo.com/5898306

That looks really bad. But why worry when we don't have details how it is shot. Looks like originally underexposed at ISO 1600 (if GH1 at all).

This is the context of the cell phone like footage:

Unfortunately, Im very worried about using GH-1 in places like this: http://www.vimeo.com/5898306 (look at the crowd, footage itself is a crap)...

Give me a break. That is not GH1. It isn't even HD. Why is there so much misinformation flying around in here?

GH1 and 1080p is what you should be shooting most of the time and switching to 720p for slow motion or fast camera movement with a lot of detail in the picture (trees). MJPEG for crazy handheld stuff.

The GH1 is fine and anybody that says it isn't I'm willing to bet either A) doesn't have one, B) isn't using it properly, or C) is a no-doer. David Marlett in this month's Movie Maker magazine describes a no-doer as somebody who has "never tried or tried and failed." And "they're cynical vortexes of negativity." I like that description and have come across a LOT of no-doers.

I have a GH1 and I think you wont have any problems in that situation with 1080 but I cant really confirm it. I'll browse my footage and see if there is anything comparable to that...

That footage looks like it was shot with a cell phone.

I'm pretty sure from his above statement is that this is the kind of footage he'll be shooting. I was never under the impression that he was suggesting that was gh1 footage.

Again, would someone "who knows for sure" please address the above quote which essentially states that even without mud, the footage is "still unusable due to some blocking artifacts which prevents you from doing any color correction... "

listen, there are going to be a lot of people who disagree with each other saying it is and it isn't capable and nit pick the **** out of every pixel because that's just kind of person they are. i'm one of those who say it's capable, plain in simple fact, if you covert the footage using neo scene 4:4:4 or prores you'll have plenty of room to color correct. hell i was able to color correct raw mjpeg footage from the d90 and that's artifact hell. why not just find some raw .mts files out there and decide for youself before jumping ship. plenty of that floating around too. just request some if you can't find any.

I've had my GH1 for a few days and it works perfect on 1080P, 720P60 and 720P MJPEG. I knew that the mud crap was going to be just that, crap. It is amazing, like Nitsuj wonders, why is there so much misinformation flying around here? Especially from people that don't have the camera and all they rely on is video they see on the on web. I am making money with it already as I learn more and more how to use it. I have to thank Panasonic one more time for stepping up to the plate. BTW: The kit lens works perfect. The only other lens I want is a faster 4/3 lens. I don't see the point of having to deal with crop factor and focusing problems of full frame lenses on the GH1.

Oh, sorry guys! Of course it's not a GH-1 footage, just a random stuff from vimeo. I just wanted to show you what kind of places Im going to shoot. Crowdy streets with tones of colorful lights. Of course I will use a tripod or stabilize my cam in a different way, so there wont be too much shaking, but after reading about the mud Im worried about recording it in 1080p anyway. A lot is going to happen within the frames.

I ventured as far as I dared into mud territory at the weekend while shooting a music video for a singer / song writer in a sunny park in Berlin under a leafy tree. I shot in both 720p for the slow mo bits and 1080p for the rest.

Transcoding the footage now so we will see if mud is a major problem or not.

Unnoticeable while playing it back on the camera. But playback of the transcoded files on my Macbook Pro is a disaster. Choppy, compressed, smeary. It's about time they put native AVCHD support into Quicktime or at least got it working properly in VLC Player. Can't believe Quicktime X with Snow Leopard is still such a retard when it comes to MTS file playback.

Will post the finished music video on Vimeo later this week.
