So much noise

I have a dvx100a with 196hours on it. I go to film school so I end up seeing a lot of footage from all kinds of different cameras from dv, hdv, and also film. What I really can't explain is why all my footage looks so bad. I have so much noise and other distortion in it. I am shotting in 24P for the most part and I try to shoot at 1/120 and F 5.6. Sometimes I have to shoot with the ND at 1/64 and other times with the ND filter off and a open iris, but everything still looks about the same.

I forgot to add that the video looks fine when it's not on full screen. I guess when it plays at 720x480 it's ok, but if I would make the video player bigger or burn it to a dvd to play on a tv, then it looks like hell.

I even reset all the setting on the camera to see if that would help, but it did nothing.

I am going to upload a few pictures of how the stuff looks. Could it be something in fcp? I just started to use my mac this year and I really have no idea what I am doing in fcp yet. It looks like the clips need to be deinterlaced, but I have no idea why.

Ugh the pictures are 720x480 so they look fine for the most part. I don't think they are much help.

I understand still are a really bad way of showing my problem, but my internet sucks real bad right now and it's the best I can do right now.

Any feedback would be great. I am new to the camera so I really don't know what I am doing with it yet.

Never deinterlace 24p footage. The proper thing to do is remove the pulldown.

As you're using FCP, one of two things is mostly likely happening here.

1) You're shooting 24p Advanced, but you're either not capturing correctly, or you're not in a 24p timeline.

2) You're shoot 24p standard, and you're not removing the pulldown with Cinema Tools. (And, you may not be in a 24p timeline.)

There's a sticky in the FCP section which describes proper 24p capture.

Hey the steve,
Pic3, Pic2 and Pic4 look bad because of interlacing. My guess is that you either didn't shoot 24p, or you shot 24p and forgot to remove the pull-down. From the grabs, the video didn't look too bad. I am not sure what the problem you are seeing is without moving footage. One thing to point out, which you might already realize, is that FCP does not show interlacing except for at 100%. Another thing worth saying: the DVX shots SD and will look pixellated on both HD tv's, Laptops and ACD's when using full screen mode in FCP (command + f12). This is normal.

Post some footage and we may be able to help you further.

Yeah I am uploading some stuff right now, but I have crappy wifi net at my apparent and it's taking so long. I may just have to do it when I go to class tomorrow.

I am 100% sure that I am shotting in 24P. The tv I use to view stuff on is not hd and it still looks the same. I tried to talk to my professor about about my fcp settings and told me that my settings are fine. ( I don't trust her at all) She told me to use dv ntsc 48khs. I know there is a dv ntsc 48khs with pulldown removal.(I even asked her about that) I am sure she has giving me all kinds of wrong info about everything I have asked her, so I guess I am here to find out some real info

The pictures really do not show any of the noise that I am talking about.
Everything plays fine back at 720x480 (the res the pics are in ), but as soon as I go full screen everything looks so bad. Most people in my class are using gl's or sony vx2000's and everything they do just looks "clearer" at full screen or when it's projected on a wall.

No, you don't want to use a DV 29.97 timeline if you're editing 24p footage. (You CAN, but you see what happens.) If you have 24p material, edit in 24p . . .

But shoot 24pA. Will make your life easier.

Again, check the stickies in the FCP section.

Hey Steve just saw your problems I would recommend trying these settings in FCP and see if you're still having trouble.
to make these changes go into the Audio/VIdeo settings window/

Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48KHZ - 24

Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48KHZ Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal

Also check the Easy Setup window right above that and make sure that your rate is set at all rates also you might want to try setting your format to DV/Panasonic DVCPRO, I;ve found that this list of settings to help with video problems.

I would propose that maybe you don't have a problem at all. Full screen in FCP is not an actual viewing format. You're going to burn this to DVD at its native 720x480 resolution, and it'll be watched on TV, or projected from there. Or maybe send back to tape at 720x480 and watch from that. As long as it looks good in those circumstances, then you're set. I wouldn't worry about what you see during editing. Have you burned some of your footage to a native 24p DVD and checked it out yet?

Other than that, the DVX100A is a noisy camera, and you can turn down DETAIL and turn up CORING to combat that (and make sure you're not using an GAIN).

The gain is off, I am sure of it. I have also burned the stuff to a dvd and also exported it from fcp to watch it. Everything looks the same. I will upload some stuff tomorrow and show you what I am talking about.

Here are 2 videos. This is what everything looks like inside fcp and outside of it. I even used the macs at school and everything looks the same so I don't think it's my computer or fcp settings.

Everyone I talk to says that it looks like it compressed, but I don't see how. The footage is right from the camera with nothing done to it. I understand that blip.tv or youtube does some compression, but this is what it really looks like all the time no matter what.

Could it be the heads? The camera only has 190hours on it.
