So, how is Premiere CS4?

Okay, now that some of you may have CS4 and used it in real life editing, how is it so far? I'm thinking of upgrading but waiting to see what the responses are. Feed backs on it from average Joe users is of great help. Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing because I'm at the "dump Premiere Pro for Vegas Pro or Avid" crossroads and since it seems as if I'll need to upgrade [again :(] my computer, if there are bug issues, massive resource needs and/or slow running programs... that would be good to know before I buy or upgrade.

CS4 runs like CS3 basically. There is nothing that I've noticed that's different as far as the way it runs. It's got some really great new features, least of which is the text transcribing tool. I never use it. The workflow features are awesome. Track targeting, etc, timeline based settings rather than project based settings, and upcoming support for OMF is a great feature.

It's still got the problem of the playhead not starting IMMEDIATELY when you press L and it also still has the problem of the playhead being ahead of the video/audio in the timeline. The waveforms dont match up to what's playing. It makes lining up things to certain music cues, etc, a little bit of a pain.

But overall, I think it's awesome. You can even output your HD timeline via firewire (it's not in HD, it gets converted down to SD) to an external monitor, something you couldn't do in Premiere CS3.

Re: firewire support in CS4

I have ordered CS4 for my new Toshiba Qosmio G50-402 laptop
I was running Premier elements on my old XP laptop and the firewire link via my JVC BR-3000E deck worked fine, but will not work with Vista are you using Vista and if so was there any problems with your firewire link initially.

CS4 is good stuff

Now you can create a blank project without being stuck in a single fps sequence. You can now create sequences of any fps and stuff it in other sequences.

Batch rendering makes it amazing to work with. Now I can render multiple sequences when I go to sleep.

No crashes in HD yet.

AVCHD works great.

Thats a great idea for seperate projects using the slightly diff titles sequences, great news.

Well they screwed up the P2 1080 24pa setting. It now sees every clip as 29.97 and you have to 'interpert footage' for each clip and clip the 24p pulldown. Apparently it's also doing the same for dvx 24pa footage. Pain in ass considering the new media browser rules and you have work around it in a stupid way.

That is scheduled to change with version 4.0.2; it will be back the way it was in 3.1 and later.

how about the pulldown issue for the hv20 owners? I would like to know that my little handy cam for vacations and home videos can actually be captured in an editor and edited without going through some third party program to remove the pulldown.

Problem is, the HV20 has no pulldown flags embedded in its data stream; no editor will be able to do it automatically, like it can be done with other cameras which do embed the flags.

THANK YOU JIM! Couldn't get this confirmed on the Adobe board. Is the update scheduled for this month? What a dumb mistake.

Other P2 quirks. The media brower rules and saves so much time. Wish bridge could preview P2. Wish P2 would work in Soundbooth and Photoshop. The transcribe feature also can't read p2 mxf and so you have to convert to wave files if you want to use it. It only works for narration though not dialog.

Also want the render and replace for Audition and AIFF and OMF support like promised.

Other than that It's way faster to edit tapeless and the 'open clip in AE' is brilliant.

It wasn't a "mistake," but a re-tooling of the program. They rebuilt the whole way of going about creating sequences. In CS3 (and before), you had Project settings which were what all Sequences had to conform to. In CS4, they've introduced independent sequences, and there are no project settings, so it takes more work to do the automatic pulldown, especially considering it has to work when a sequence of one frame rate is nested in a sequence of a different frame rate.

I worked closely with them throughout the beta testing and insisted that they need to get pulldown removal back to where it was; it looks like it'll happen.

Word is, they're working on it.

No, you just need to make sure your folders (Contents) have "Read-only" unchecked; they have it checked at default. Then, it will work with the P2 material.

I've written a CS4/P2 workflow paper which hopefully Panasonic will have up on their site soon; a lot of this stuff is detailed in it.

It only works for narration though not dialog.

Not sure what that means?

I guess what i was hoping for was something to the effect of what TMPGenc 4 Xpress can do with the footage.

or even cineform.

I thought Final Cut Pro could do it on import? Just what I heard, never tried it myself. Guess not?
