Official Mattebox / Matte Box F.A.Q.

I'm moving this to the HVX area. Also I wrote up a report a while ago about my experience with the CAVision, Chrosziel, and Vocas boxes...

brand name has somethin to do with the price, features as well.

i like the hyson because it folds up so small , like an inch or 2 thick when folded up to store away. the flags are all adjustable and the bottom flag can be taken off to fold it away and have it fit on my rail system

One thing that I have learn ( the hard way) is that you usually get what you pay for. For instance a $500 follow focus will not do as good of a job as a $1500 one, a $500 lens won't be as good as a $1500 lens so you can't expect a $500 mattebox to be as good as a $1500 matte box. As I said before, I own both a Petroff and a Geardear, I like them both, both are quality products but the Petroff is much better. if I had a small budget, I would be very happy with just the Geardear. But since I got the Petroff, I never use my Geardear anymore, and will probably sell it at some point.

my geardear package just arrived (looks fantastic) but i'm having trouble understanding how the baseplate attaches to my manfrooto 503, is there a piece I'm missing because i just dont see how they fit????

I have a question about all these matt boxes. I just got my Redrock M2 adapter and a bunch of Nikon lenses and a Geardear mattbox (medium pre configure package) It all works great. specially on the wider angle lenses. on my 180mm lense, when you focus from 6' to infinity the lense gets longer by 1" or so. So if I have the matt box close to the lense this will be an issue (especially if I have filters in the matt box).
How do all these other matt boxes handled the growth in lenght of telephoto lenses when you rack focus?
thanks?

On my Hysonfilms.com mattebox, i remove the inner ring on the mattebox and it allows the the lens to fit through the mattebox when focusing, no issue here with that.

oh yeah it does. we've got eid soon.. and i'll be loaded with dough. I've got some dough now, i want to buy the bigma 50-500 for my new mickey mouse camera, the 400d. Anyways, Joel just lost his dad, this may not be the best subject to talk about. Joel, wherever you are man, i offer you my condolences from a thousand miles from you.

geardear matte box and base/rod

Greetings all,

I'm really interested in picking up the geardear matte box and such set-up for the HVX. Very good looking product for a great price.. and I like that it's modular and will work with the 35mm adapters.. and can be used as a clip on for run and gun stuff as well as with rods and all that. Just wanted to know if anyone has opinions on this stuff.

The other one that looks good is that set-up from hyson films but they aren't shipping and such now as I read on his site. Of course I'd like to be able to afford a nicer set up but 1500 for a mattebox seems excessive when there are nice affordable solutions popping up all the time.

Any and all info on these as well as other ones to consider is cool.. thanks

That one might be a little overkill depending on what camera you're using it with. It is usually packaged with a 130 - 85mm reducer, but if you're going to a 72mm (75mm OD) front, it's a bit much. Also, this mattebox is configured for 15mm x 100mm OC rods - not your more typical (for 1/3" cameras) 15mm x 60mm OC rods systems.

If you're running follow-focus or DOF converters, you should look at 15mm x 60mm OC as most tend to come on this type of bracket.

The Cavision MB4169-H2 is a better fit for 82mm and 72mm front lenses.

Cinevate just released a new mattebox. For $445 it looks pretty good!

Cinevate 2 Stage Mattebox
pixel_trans.gif

This is a basic mattebox with 2 removeable, rotating filter stages. The base is CNC machined from billet aluminum and locks the mattebox at the industry standard 85mm. It is designed to work of course with our Brevis-to-rails mount and will work both with 15mm and 5/8" rails. The French flag (top shade) is adjustable, and can be removed if desired. There are also two smaller adjustable shades top and bottom. A set of foam inserts to taylor the rear collar to your existing lenses is included. The mattebox allows the use of 4x4 filters up to 4mm (1/8") thick. With two stages, you can use two filters at the same time if required.

soarprod,

If the Vocas is set up with a height-adjustable riser bridge, it should work on any standard 15mm x 60mm OC iris rod system.

Hey thanks overland - I cant tell from the photos but I would assume so - are you saying to use the vocas with say the cavision rods?

If the Vocas has a t-riser that goes to any standard rods configuration (e.g., 15mm x 60mm OC; 15mm x 100mm OC; 19mm x 105mm OC), then you would want a system that corresponds.

Red Rock, Cavision, indiFOCUS, Chrosziel - any standard bridge plate should work once you figure out what the rod diameter and spacing is.
