I feel the way the camera looks has altered perspectives on the problem.  Please consider as if this effect happened to a stock dvx.  What would be your guess as to the cause?
[/quote]

I'm sorry, but how could we possibly ignore the fact that you took a hacksaw to your cam and obviously did some rewiring, given that the XLRs, the firewire, and the video outs changed position . . . ?

Why is it that you’re so unwilling to consider the idea that YOU screwed something up?  I’m not sure how anyone can help beyond telling you to check your settings . . . it’s not like we can get inside your cam and have a “eureka” moment.

Re: so close... have a strange image question

Just curious. Does anyone happen to know if EVS is stocking hack saws yet?

Re: so close... have a strange image question

Yet, you'll use a canon lens on your DVX? Makes perfect sense to me, your not wanting to buy one even if you could afford it that is. That's cool. I'll get back on the short bus with the rest of the XL2 owners. Now where did I put my hacksaw, oh that's right I don't need one. Stupid me. Boy sure do wish *I* were smart enough to saw open *MY* camera....

Thanks for the insightful response. I apologize if it came off as me dogging on the xl2. It seems like a nice camera. It's just not for me. If I had 5k I would try to find an SR-1. It pains me that forums, regardless of topic, are prone to this sort of behavior. I dont want to piss anyone off by stating my opinion. The xl2 just isnt worth the money for my specific needs. The dvx is a sunken cost.

I find it rather funny that you think there is some sort of irony that I would use a canon lens on my dvx but not want to buy a canon camera. Those two things have nothing to do with eachother. Canon optics are good, and it was the only c-mount lens I had available. That has nothing to do with my likes or dislikes of the xl2. And I am sorry you feel that what I have done is a sure-fire sign that I am stupid.

I'm sorry, but how could we possibly ignore the fact that you took a hacksaw to your cam and obviously did some rewiring, given that the XLRs, the firewire, and the video outs changed position . . . ?

These things really arent as complicated as people might imagine. Consider it like a car. There are different systems operating independantly to fulfill a larger effect. There is the xlr board and daughter board. they have 6 total leads going to two xlr connectors. I bought some new ones from radio shack, extended the leads and plugged them in. No great mystery there. The video board has not been modified. I didnt even change the ribbon. I flipped the panel so it would face upwards ( a benefit of the flat flex cable). No modifications to any wiring or circuits were made. I am sorry the crappy cheap metal housing that had my very precious gain control and user buttons are missing. I am telling you that you are decieved by the photos. The camera is stock, all I have done is removed the ffc for the lens control systems. I AM NOT saying that this couldn't be my fault. I may have something loose. Something could be rubbing and shorting out. These are of course possibilities. I suppose I made a wrong assumption that some one else might have had a problem similar to mine and had found remedy. It may be because I dont have much status on this board, I certainly dont post very often - but I have been following this board for quite some time, and I honestly must say I feel alittle let down. For people that are always at the forefront of progressive video technology - I know guys completely renovating the camera so they can pull 4:4:4 color sampling out of the camera. Thats amazing. I am so glad people are out there doing something original. I feel like my motives were justified and I am receiving little more than sacarstic remarks. Is it really that stupid of a concept? Am I totally off base here? I have been shooting video professionally for 8 years and have built custom rigs for several productions here in the NW. This is what I do. I take things apart, I analyze them. What can make them work better? What can I do to improve this design? I think I did. I think this camera has far more potential that the DVX in stock form. I am very close to having this camera functioning. I just thought (mistakingly) that the people I had previously looked to for inspiration might take me seriously and try to help get this camera up and running. If you dont know, thats all you have to say. I would love feedback on the concept, design, implementation or whether or not it was a stupid idea. That is great. But my main goal was to try and see if this had ever happened to someone else. I cant help but think that if I had not shown the pictures of the camera I would have received a totally different response. I thought I was being fairly funny when I said I used the hacksaw. That was to get everyone's attention. Yes I did use one, but I feel this has been blown way out of proportion. This isnt rocket science. I moved some boards around and put on some new cosmetics. I am sorry I have come off as some rediculous hack, building a frankenstein camera and then begging the dvxuser community to bring my creation to life. Not the case whatsoever. All I wanted to know is if anyone had ever had the problem I described. Apparently that was asking too much.

Re: so close... have a strange image question

Well, you were being pretty funny, and I got a kick out of it. Sorry if everyones kind of slammed you, I think it was mostly just in fun... Actually, like I said earlier, I have to hand it to you. I would never try it myself, but the fact that you got an image out of it after everything is totally mind boggling to me. I really think most people on here are truly interested in seeing this to a conclusion, and would love to see you get it worked out. You are obviously a great engineer, AND have a good sense of humor. Good luck. Keep everyone posted.

Re: so close... have a strange image question

Look, I’m not trying to fight with you or call you stupid, but the way you asked the question – “no, ignore all that; what could be wrong?” – especially after a couple people addressed your settings and they checked out -- comes across as a standard question usually asked when it’s an ID-10-T error.  A little more of the info you posted just now, concerning your background, what you did, why you did it, etc., prior to asking the question, would have gone a long way.

If you’ve read the site in depth, then you know that we DO get a lot of bonehead questions along the lines of “I only dropped this thing TWICE, why isn’t it working, the piece of #*(#&!!!!!” – or ones more mild, but in the same vein.  Reading through what you wrote initially, and couple it with the fact that no one really knows you, I can see where people would think it was one of those questions.

Re: so close... have a strange image question

Sporter--We're a little sensitive today, eh? I think this is a matter of folks looking at your black box and getting thrown for a loop because you're asking us to troubleshoot your problems. You're out there scaling Everest and you're phoning us in the pub asking for directions. :-) Like others, I applaud your ingenuity and fearlessness. I also think you probably have a short or crossed wires somewhere. I've done my share of electronic projects and it's usually a matter of tracing back every part of your circuit--step by step, until you find the mistake or bad solder connection. Good luck with the project and please post some clips when (not if) you get it working correctly.

You are more than welcome.   ;)

Again, I wish you the best of luck and hope that you keep us updated on your progress.

Best regards,

Re: so close... have a strange image question

Wow you certainly dont pussyfoot around!!!!

I am amazed that you had the idea and determination to do this major surgery.

I think it could be a useful conversion to give more capability to dvx100 users.

I have noticed that a couple of companies are doing major surgery on 100's to create 3d rigs for example.

You chose to mount the canon lens and mounting, is it possible to fit a 35mm lens mount for the ultimate setup?

Please keep at it and let us know how you go.

Re: so close... have a strange image question

I really do hope you get this to work. I think it looks great. Once you get it working like this, are you going to do the chip conversion thingy so that you can record 4:4:4 (chip conversion thingy is about as technical as I can get).

Re: so close... have a strange image question

Sporter,
Any luck with plugging the Leica D wiring harness back in?

I am curious if there is any circuitry hiding in the lense we don't know about.

Hey Jan C do they make a repair manual for the DVX and DVXa. Would love to get my hands on something with schematics and exploded drawings. I am a visual troubleshooter.

Sporter, Don't let these folks get to ya, stay the course. You are almost there. You can see the top of the mountain. And you will have the most unique DVX of them all.

;D ::) ;D :P ;D ;D :D :D :D

Re: so close... have a strange image question

Sporter,

If you never get this working you could make photos and directions on how to assemble and disasemble the cam and sell the books for $60 bucks a piece.

I will buy your first one!

Re: so close... have a strange image question

It DOES look great. You certainly are industrious. Congratulations on making a great looking camera. Did you get the technical issues worked out yet? Good luck. So what are you calling it? A Canonsonic?

Re: so close... have a strange image question

thanks everybody. Unfortunately havent had too much time to mess around with it the last few days. Needed it functioning atleast as a deck so I can move some projects out the door. I plan on taking a closer look this week, so hopefully I will have an update soon. I have a feeling the camera is looking for some feedback possibly from the lens harness. As far as lenses go, I have heard there is a Nikon SLR to c-mount adapter. I'm not sure what the effect would be since I am using such a small imager (1/3" compared to 35mm) but it might be a great opportunity to run some nice primes on the camera. Anyway thanks for the kind words, I will have more soon!

Re: so close... have a strange image question

Hey there,

I could be way off here, but in your beauty shots, I don't see the white balance sensor anywhere. If that was accidentally chopped while making mods, that would be your problem. Since your 30p mode worked before white balancing, that makes me believe further that that is where your problem lies. Even if it is mounted somewhere, it probably needs it's original plastic cover over it. Hope you get it working.

Hacksaws up,

Re: so close... have a strange image question

ben-

thanks for the input...  now that you mention it, you are absolutely right. Never even thought the WB had a sensor.  duh.  do you know where it is located on a stock DVX?  I have one sitting in front of me I am going to poke around and take a look.  But no I never mounted any sort of sensor for the wb circuit.  thats probably what it is.. although wouldn't it screw up my 30i mode as well?  still worth a shot..

ok so I am looking at a stock one right now.. i only see two potential canidates: there is the plastic cover near the video/firewire output - I am assuming that is IR for the remote.  The only other option that I can see is the plastic panel on the front of the mic? I guess I thought that was IR aswell, but correct me if I am wrong..

thanks for the new hope! I havent even given the camera much attention lately, this has sparked my interest.

EDIT: hahaha helps to check the user's manual. looks like it is near the video I/O - that is crazy - wouldnt the factory mattebox interfere?

thanks ben! I'll look into it and let you all know what happens.

Sean,

Not quite sure about 30i mode. However, if you haven't tried to set white balance in that mode, it would still be on the same last working setting, just like your 30p was before you tried to set it. Glad to help, hope it works for you, keep me posted.

Take Care,

Re: so close... have a strange image question

how is the camera iris control, looks like you removed it, but maybe the camera needs it to compensate the FPS mode change ? Did you tried to change the auto iris setting in scene menu ?
