So...are AVCHD files smaller/larger than HDV files?

PH mode runs about 21 mbps.

HDV runs about 3.6 MB/s.

Pretty close.

But you're whistling by the graveyard if you expect a pleasant editing experience in RT with native footage in Pr.
 
AVCHD footage comes in many different sizes, ranging from 6mbps to 13mbps to 17mbps to 21mbps-24mbps.

HDV comes in two flavors, either 19mbps or 25mbps.
 
Thanks for the responses, although I keep hearing different answers as far as editing AVCHD in RT, would a quad proc (2.5ghz) 4g ram, PR CS4 handle it alright?

Alright, let's say that I'm I've got 5 minutes of 25mbps HDV vs 5 minutes of PH HMC-150, who's going to be the larger file size?
 
Native avchd is smaller, a 16gb card is about 2 hours were a native hdv tape is around 13-16gb and each tape is an hour. I think it's because avc is more efficent bit for bit, but that's why computers have a harder time with it.

My dual-core 2.4GHz laptop can play back most forms of AVCHD in a 960x540 preview window at or very nearly at real-time in best quality. I would have no qualms cutting footage on that. If you have a quad, it should easily be able to handle it.

I can't say about the relative performance between Vegas and CS4 though, because I don't have CS4.
