FS7: Snowlight: A new test film & blog post

I'm in the same boat. So far I've only done CC 1st pass in Catalyst and then some polish in AE but I need to get some more advanced stuff to make this camera sing. The good news on big jobs I'd just hire a colourist but those little ones where getting every dollar yourself that is where I need to improve on colour grading.

Can anyone recommend a good resolve tutorial? Does the free version of resolve do NR? might have to spring for the full thing or tackle another 3rd party solution.

Its 'odd' to me the people who dont colour - to me Im only in for a camera that colours as I want!. Especially as Resolve has IMO opened a good suite to everyone!

Colouring seems an important skill - even to know where the camera can go - and how different exposures will colour - even if, as is ideal to me, jobs are finished by a full time screen junkie - I prefer to be out shooting!

As for NR - im not sure if Resolve does BUT if you learn to desaturate the shadows then you might find no need to reduce noise as you will take out chroma noise in the shadows anyway which tends to be the worse stuff.

Also we need to experiment at shooting CineEI 500 where possible - I think this will lead to clean files!

In Resolve find the Luminace VS Saturation curve and do a nice roll off at the foot - which takes out chroma shadow noise.

(one can save this as a 'still' and paste it forward - even to future projects) so work is 'minimal' once you have a pallete of 'Stills'

Thanks Sam! I will check that out. Colouring is an art and something I know I need to get better at as you say even just to know what is possible and what isn't.

Thanks Sam et al. I understand the character of color pretty well but the mechanics of jockeying it all on the screen can be difficult.

And much to my sadness, the free version of resolve does NOT have noise reduction. Gah! That's one of the few things it doesn't do.

I think if you are exposing correctly you wont have noise problems.

Personally Id pay a grand for Resolve if it were not free.

As for jokey-ing Resolve usually if you know what you want to do you can find a way to do it after 3 mins on the internet.

The hype is not only image quality. Is also FS7 is perfect body and no rig needed but people now start rigging. People now want to replace crappy evf etc.

Owners like to customize and hotrod. It doesn't dictate that the design or equipment was bad. People purchase a brand new Porsche 911 and then replace the stock exhaust. Doesn't mean the stock exhaust was crappy. Personally, I like the Fs7's EVF. Possibly even more than the F5's OLED VF. Not only for the sharpness but for the fact that I can easily remove the loupe thus facilitating more shooting positions. The inability to remove the loupe on the F5's OLED greatly restricted my shooting. Again, it's preference. Preference for something different does not mean the thing being replaced or modified is crappy.

The upcoming Sony FE 28-135 is unlikely to be of high optical quality. But that said, there will be a time where it means the Fs7 user get's the shot while the F5 user has to explain that they missed the shot because they were switching lenses and dicking around with a finicky lens adapter. Many are excited about the Fs7 because of it's e-mount that means they will be able to use all their arty leica glass or a dedicated lens sans adapter. The two cameras are not in competition. Each have advantages and disadvantages. I can empathize with F5 owners who are tired of hearing that others just got an F5 with better cabling layout & dual slot recording for only $8k. Get over it. They are excited about their new acquisitions just as F5 owners were excited over their acquisition and probably chapped the F55 owners.

In a perfect world an owner operator would own both the Fs7 and an F5. Use the Fs7 for run & gun...use the F5 for studio work and work that is more deliberate. Use both for two-camera interview setups as they will match.

That was a GoPro Hero 4 at 4K on a Phantom 2 drone. (I love that shot too... we only had 5 min to get it and leave!). There are more details in the blog post. Thanks for the kind comments.

Thanks. Just read the blog -- great post! You do a really nice job of laying everything out in an objective manner.

2nd vote for Ripple Training for Resolve. You need the full version of Resolve for NR.

Has anyone shot RAW with the FS7/ 7Q yet?
