Snowboarding Video - Hot Dawgs and Hand Rails

Hey, this is my first time posting my work here. Um, how brutal are you guys gonna be?

In all seriousness though I just bought my DVX100a from a kid on eBay. I paid 2400, but the camera only had 24 hours shot on it - I guess he thought he was gonna use it more than he did. I made a couple quickie snowboard videos, but this was my first time trying to capture an event well.

The event, by the way, is a rail jam that Bear Mountain holds in September. They pay for a bunch of ice to be crushed and then blown on one side of the mountain. They set up a bunch of rails and let the riders do their thing until the snow melts.

Anyway, please let me know what you think!

Nice! Im impressed by the image quality and you got some great shots too! Wish I could have made it down for HD&HR! Im going to try to post footage of this years party @ The Block in south lake though.

Nice footage, ;-) ... I don't usually like any of the snowboarding/skateboarding videos on here but that one held my attention the whole way through. Nice shots, I especially like the ones where the camera is stationary and your "shot and edited" one. Also, the one where the guy falls into you, that was pretty funny.

Your reds do look really good... Was this just stock dvx?

P.S. X-Play is one of my favorite shows and it rocks, and therefore you rock as well, keep up the hilariously good work... ;-)

Wow! An X-Play fan. Thanks for your kind words and please keep watching! (especially if you have a Nielsen box)

The song is "I've Just Seen a Face" which is obviously by the Beatles, but this version is from the film "Across the Universe" which just opened at the Arclight.

This was on scene setting F6. I have shot some other snow stuff, and the trickiest part is this: Because the snow is so reflective, you are CONSTANTLY having to ride the iris. If you leave it on auto-iris, the footage will be way too dark because the camera over-compensates for the snow reflection.

And also I obviously leave it in manual and focus for the rail that the riders are on. When they get too close or far away that can be a problem but I haven't found a good solution for this.

I white-balance off of the snow all the time, so the reds pop a bit because of that. Also, I turn up the saturation in Avid very very slightly.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

I noticed that SOME of your reds were over saturated/blocky, like in the end on his hat...Man, man were saying your reds looked nice because your footage did look saturated, but most of your reds looked really good, and in place. Usually a lot of peoples footage on this site, have blocky reds, because of over saturated images. What were your settings? Good job!

scene settings now plz. Read off what the F6 settings are.

that footage looked really good. What frame rate did you use?

It was 24pa, I believe the scene settings are stock. I did bump the saturation a bit in Avid Xpress DV.
