Snow Leopard

No, I just upgraded to SNow Leopard. I was just saying that if I had a terminal error and my hard drive was lost, I could go back to Leopard and revert with Time Machine if I had to.

But I had no issues with SL at all. Everything is running like it was but faster.

I've transferred footage, I've edited with FCP and I've compressed footage all without any issues.

My only beef is I wish I could get the control bar in QT X to disappear when I've paused playback so I could capture a still via Grab. :)

Kevin:

Remember that you still have QT 7 installed if you chose the option.

It's located in the Utilities folder.

RE: Snow Leopard / AVCHD Speed Boost

RE: Snow Leopard / AVCHD Speed Boost

I don't think you'll see much speed improvement in any encode/decode/transcode operations just by upgrading to Leopard.

However, I do know that Apple seems to have separated out the "Pro Tools Foundation" Layer (where all the encode/decode/transcode stuff is performed) and this code is (or will be) shared by all of their video apps.

And I fully expect that the Pro Team (probably Quicktime or FCP team) is playing around with offloading encode/decode/transcode operations to GPUs like nvidia and others. Since many of the GPUs have a lot of mp4 and other capabilities "on-chip", it wouldn't surprise me to see an FCP 7.0.1 (or later) update that allows native AVCHD and other native codecs if they can figure out how to leverage on-board GPU hardware for CPU offload.

PPC so I cant upgrade.

FCP at this point doesnt edit AVCHD natively.

I just encode to ProRes 422. I just got snow leopard. Significant speed increase in FCS 2 (particularly compressor and motion). I am running an iMac 2.16 gHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB ram and a pretty good video card.
