Snow falling - Super8 look?

Hello fellow dvxusers.

Snow started falling today. After a couple of hours it was all nice and white everywhere, and it just kept on falling. So I felt bored, and went out to shoot some of the snow, just to experiment with exposure levels etc.

Now I tried to make a super8 look out of it. Think it looks acceptable?

Yeah, looks great. The key is the highlights which are very compressed. It gives the impression of film's wide dynamic range.
Nice job!

Thanks guys!

Actually, the DVX proved itself to be very impressive on cinegamma in the snow. I never blew out a single highlight, and the exposure still looked great.

i hate vegas' crap "dust particles" they look so fake....
but your look is very beautiful man.

Played around in Vegas 6.0, no extra plugins there.

Anyone want a tutorial?

I would also love a Vegas Tutorial. Very much so. I could use this.

Please don't charge for a tutorial. Haha.

(really... don't)

So, here is the very short tutorial on how to make super8-look in Vegas 6.0 without any extra plugins.

First off, here is our base screengrab which is going to be super8'ed.

We start by adding the Color Curves. Make it look something like this:

Then, add the Color Corrector Adjust it like this: (many situations will make you reduce the saturation by 50% or so)

Now comes the Film Grain Make it nice and grainy. You may also put the grain underneath the Color Corrector, if you only want the darker areas grainy.

Then, Film Effects How many of these needed can very well be discussed.

Last of the video effects, the Cookie Cutter to make the vignetting.

Now, the effects row should look like this:

Finally, let's kill the frame-rate. Right-click on the clip:

Your image should now be adjusted into something similar to what you have seen.

Enjoy :)

how different is it going to be to pull this effect off in final cut?

i'm not that advance...i apologize.

Extremely different, but you can achieve it with a plugin like Magic Bullet or Gfilm.

Most of that stuff is drag and drop, but it is easily tweaked.

try zooming into the center of the image a little, wit the Track motion tool, to get that nice, soft yet sharp, yet soft, thing that S8mm has. Cause it is rarely is Razor sharp and in perfect focus. gaussian blur just looks unnatural for this purpose. you gotta zoom in to the cneter portion of the image.

Looks fanfriggintastic. Much appreciate the tutorial too. Thank god for Vegas users. I was getting ready to reply with a request for the mask you used (what turned out to be the cookie cutter).
