Smurfs

Why is this really happening ?

aug 2011
I have a theory that would explain this.

There are a lot of smurf cartoons, right? But there is no live action smurf movie, right?

Now, we've already seen this happening to other properties that have a lot of cartoons, but no live action version. It happened to Garfield, Scooby Doo, The Flintstones and Marmaduke, just to name a few.

My theory, thusly, is that it happens through osmosis.

We were shooting in the E Village a couple of weeks ago, and there were signs blocking off some streets for the movie "Smurfs" and all I thought was WTF are they doing at Tompkins Square Park? I don't even think you can score there anymore...

What's funny is they seem to have stolen the plot from the 1987 HE-MAN movie with Dolph Lundgren.

...because that plot worked so well with THAT cartoon adaptation.

I thought you guys were kidding.
Wow.

According to rumor the original story involved the Smurfs defending their forest against a big heartless mining corporation come to dig up all their Smurfotanium. A security guy from the mining company was going to have his consciousness transferred into a Smurf body, so as to negotiate with Papa Smurf and persuade the Smurfs to pick up and leave, he was going to fall in love with Smurfette, join Smurf society and eventually lead the Smurfs to victory in battle against the evil corporation.

But then some other movie came out along vaguely similar lines and they had to retool the project into the whole 'let's go to New York City' bit.
