SmallHD's ***NEW*** HD monitor

In all my playing with monitors and cameras the best solution I have found for DSLR is 7d and Small HD

Im sure this smaller version will be similar but in a more RnG lone operator style - great

To me the only competition was (and I dont know the model) the Marshall that is $2500-$3000

The Marshal linked above is just not as good, peaking or no peaking

Really the limitiation is what the cameras kick out

But how close do you have to be for the resolution to be a factor?

What I mean is, if I'm shooting and my 1st AC is pulling focus, we can't be crammed up tight against the screen. This is where focus assist comes into play a lot more. From a few feet away.

I was a few feet away. But you'll have to judge for yourself. I am not a full-time professional camera operator, I only know that what I saw looked better than most of what else I've seen.

Im gonna hold out for the new marshall V-LCD50-HDMI when it gets released next quarter

4 AA battery operated when out on field, peaking and colour correctness abilities and they say under 600, thats a winner imo

Seems like HDMI only. What I like about the smallHD is the SDI option. The resolution won´t get much higher at that screensize, so for 1100$ this thing is future proof.
Speaking of futureproof:
anyone interested in an component only Totevision high res 7"?
Anyone?
Thought so...

I'm pretty much decided on the DP DSLR monitor because its size/weight/sharpness blew me away at first sight at the NAB show. You really have to see it to believe it. The pre-order takes 75 days from order date to delivery and they charge your card first. I think I'll hold off until I can get one in my hands in just a couple of days.

Yeah that's fantas...tic....wait....

...are we talking dollars ..:undecided..or pounds?? jk

lol even if its pounds its still a great price for me, in the U.K we get raped on prices on everything, like apple ipad, all they do is change the dollar symbol for a pound symbol, no exchange rates no nothing, we always pay more for everything, except for things that are made in the U.K like SG Blade, everything else, zacuto, redrock we pay alot more for

Well, at least you get the healthcare. The sales tax must help cover that.

The pics won't really do it justice, but here's mine.

That's a RED monitor on the right. Side-by-side the RED looks very low-res and washed out by comparison.

When I ordered my DP1, it kind of was a leap of faith. I had no experience with external monitors at all. From what I can see now, 7D and DP1 are a very good combination. I can really tell if something is in focus or not. So that works for me. What made the whole deal a real great experience is the SmallHD-Team.
They are very nice and helpful, either by email or phone. You get your questions answered. I ordered the DP1 when it was still on backorder. 1 week after it arrived the DP1x was announced. Better LCD background lighting, a few new features, all for 100 bucks more.
To be honest, I was not to annoyed by that, because the DP1 was great as it was. But then I was startled to see that I had come across a feature in the menu that was supposed to be new with the DP1x firmware, so I took a closer look and saw: They'd sent me the DP1x (says so on the monitor) for the old price (the whole set with sunhood and sleeve and screen protectors including shipping to Germany was 979$). I mailed them to ask if that was a mistake and they said that it was an early birthday present because I was willing to order while it was backordered ;)
100$ saved...

I like the size by the way. When I use it then i go close so that it almost fills my field of few. Great way to concentrate on what I'm shooting. :) If you have questions about my DP1x experience, just send me a PM or write here :)

sorry if been answered but the small hd how is it powered in the field is it AA battery powered or is it like the big canon camera batteries hanging out the back. Because thats one of the things that draws me to the new Marshall is that the batteries are enclosed inside and not hanging of the back

The DP1x sounds intruiging, but it might be a little to heavy for my taste. So the DP-SLR probably is just the right choice. Was shooting for 4 hours on a party last weekend and my arm was killing me afterwards from holding the shoulder rig all evening.

SmallHD offers their own battery (which looks like a 1,8" external HDD). For the DP-SLR they want to offer more options like using DSLR-Battery mounts (so that you can use the same batteries for the camera and the monitor).

@Simon: Shoulder rigs are all about balance. There is an option with a spring loaded pole that carries part of the weight but I don't know where I saw that.

The SmallHD battery is very slim, like FixMix says. It slots onto the back of the monitor and does not increase overall depth by more than a few mm if at all.

Having now seen it in person, I'm gonna say: you have to see it in person. You don't need focus assist because the resolution is so good, you just look at it and know.

Well, I DID see it in person and still say that the exposure indicator and focus assist features of the Marshall are much better for DSLR shooting.

I believe those features are going to be implemented in the SmallHD as well, according to the FreshDV interview at NAB.

I own it in person after testing the marshalls and consider focus assist not required or accurate enough

I am talking 7d here - the 5d is just not focusable using its 480p output IMO

I use the 7d for dynamic footage and 5d for more static shots where I have time to use the zoom facility

These cameras are flawed for focus until we can see 1:1 zoom while recording

The hurlburts of the world use cine lenses, tape, bartechs, pro pullers and distometers ($10K + or kit) - they only use a monitor for framing

IMO SmallHD, and 7d is the closest one can get to being able to focus on a reasonable budget
