smallHD DP6 calibration

So Jake are you telling me the AF100's LCD is closer than my setting for the DP6? If so I'd love to know your LCD settings because no matter what I do it's not even close.

How are you guys with color issues comparing your footage? What I used is one of the Datacolor Spyder3 products to calibrate my computer monitors, I throw copied footage up on the computer, I put the SDHC card back in the camera, and I then calibrate my DP6 to match the computer.

Bars and the blue gun.

But without proper phase and chroma controls it is a crapshoot.

You are right, this is the way it should be done, but you have to think outside the box with this monitor. Do your way in conjunction with mine and you'll be able to get the DP6 pretty close.

Dp6 wrote me back and said they have been getting similar complaints. They told me that if it's on for about an hour the image will cool down. That's not what I wanted to hear. I was hoping he would say, "we're working on another update to fix the color issues".

At this point I'm a little bummed at the dp6 performance.

I don't know if people have 1 hour to spare each time they need to use the monitor, that was a very bad response
They should definitely be working to fix it through firmware, but I've read that the firmware update has reached it's limit in terms of color calibration

TVLogic is supposed to be slightly better with color from the get go and if it isn't, you can adjust it accordingly with proper controls

I have both the DP6 and the TVLogic - the LCD has warming up period, meaning that as the LCD heats up, the Blue channel of the LCD gets brighter and brighter, or it gets cooler and cooler. The TVLogic does this the same as the SmallHD. The difference is that SmallHD seems to have default to a slightly warmer setting than the TVLogic initially, so when the TVlogic has been on for 30 minutes it's overly cool.

It seems though that people generally prefer a cool image to a warm one. I find them both useful tools, and for 1200 dollars try to find a better focus monitor... can't be done. Also, try fixing missed focus in post, and then try fixing slightly missed color in post. Pretty easy with just about any editing/post software today, but that's getting off topic :)

This is correct. Also the TVL heats up faster, since it consumes more power than the DP6. We can provide a Cooler look at start-up, if that is what our customers request. We will continue to improve the DP6 with firmware updates. Downloadable software updates occur about every 6-8 weeks. A major update should be available around the 1st of June.

I admit we did a lousy job getting the color issues resolved when the DP6 was first released. That will not happen again. Since then we have purchased some very expensive analysis tools that have allowed us to calibrate the DP6 and compare it to other monitors. We are currently exploring some presets that will allow users to quickly select a desired color profile.

That's great news! Thanks for the continuing R&D to make this monitor even better!

The DP6 uses Hue and Saturation. I am told by engineering these are essentially equivalent terms when it comes to color adjustments.
Phase = Hue
Chroma = Saturation

Looking at the specs released by TV Logic and Small HD, I see that the former consumes 9 watts and the latter consumes 8 watts with HD-SDI signals.

TV Logic has a history of doing firmware updates for their many monitor models and this certainly includes the VFM-056WP, the difference being that dealers do the updates. In fact, I have been told that the VFM-056WP will be receiving a firmware update at the end of May that will include several new features.

DP4's panel has the same color temperature problem ?
We have not completed any quantitive analysis, but the DP4 panel seems to very consistent. If there are changes it would be very difficult to detect without a analyser.

Your product landing page says 8 watts for SDI.
Dino,

Thanks for the catch. I need to resolve some internal engineering docs with the website. That being said, I want to apologize for the off the cuff comment I made that started this thread. I should should have said that the TLV consumes more power and therefore heats up faster. In any case the difference is not 2x, which was an exaggeration. I will try to be more precise in the future.

Thanks again!

No worries, Reed. I think the TVL has slightly higher power consumption due to the HDMI to HD-SDI converted output.

Your post gave the impression that TVL doesn't offer firmware updates, so I'm happy I was able to clarify that issue. I've received free firmware updates on TVL products that I've owned since 2008.

Full disclosure: I have no affiliation with TV Logic, its US distributor Preco or any of its dealers. I have never been compensated in any way by any of those entities noted.

Would using a color calibrator like the x-rite i1 pro would help? Not to create a color profile but to analyze the colors.

I don't know a ton about that device but I do not think it would be able to help set the SmallHD color. I would be curious to see exactly what the device does. We have some really nice equipment here to help with analyzing the color and for the low price tag I'm not sure what it would be capable of helping with.

I just wish they would release a firmware updated that turns the false color to the industry standard! And built in scopes! Come on guys, this is just software stuff. They pledged that the SmallHD DP6 should be "future proof."
