FS7: SmallHD 702 Feedback

Thanks Ben,

Quick question for you guys. From what I understand, the 702 Lite and the FS7 don't play well together. I've haven't used the 702 Lite much on my FS7 (mostly been on my other camera), but on quick glance, it does seem like there's some lines through it.

Ben mentioned something in a private message about a PSF signal. What is a PSF signal and could that be causing the 702 Lite SDI to 7Q incompatibility that I've been experiencing? Like I said 702 Lite SDI works perfect with SmallHD DP6, just not with the 7Q (image has lots of lines and is pretty terrible).

I cannot test it till tonight as I'm about to go on a job, but is there a setting on the Odyssey 7Q that I can change so it will accept a PSF output from the 702 Lite?

Thanks

Definitely no problems with the 702 lite and the FS7 for me. Looks great. Running the 2.4 firmware.

Basically psf is a way of of outputting a signal over SDI and from back when interlaced video was a much more prevalent tech than it is now, the standard way of sending a progressive video signal was via PSF which splits a progressive frame into 2 fields. Not all things play nice over sdi but in this instance I've not had an issue with the FS7 and 702. Not sure what happens with the downstream SDI of the 702 if you're sending it to a 7Q though.

I'm going to make the jump to a Small HD monitor this year and pack away the Sony VF for safe keeping. I'm just stuck on the fence between the 502 and the 702 lite.

702 lite - Extra real estate is always nice and on tripod or in studio I love having the extra size over the 502 but for hand held I'd still have to use the Sony VF as the 702 is just too large for hand held.

502- I could hopefully replace the VF and never have to pull it out. It would leave me wanting for studio or tripod shoots as 5" is on the small size and costs more than teh 702 lite. Also I'd be limited to canon batts when I have a pile of Sony L sitting on my desk.

Ideally I'd still be able to throw it in my camera bag but not worry about snapping the joystick so if possible a pel case is a bit too large.

May end up having to go that way if there's not suitable alternative.

The portabrace hood/case might be an option.

I own the 702 Lite, but use the 502 on my employer Gimbal quite regularly. The size difference is quite noticeable.

I have used the Sidewinder and I find it quite good actually. Some people complain about the ghosting on the side, but that does not bother me at all. The Sidewinder + 502 kit is quite heavier than the stock Sony EVF.

Personally, I'd rather just use the Sony EVF for run and gun and for more controlled situations I stick on the 702 Lite. Different uses for difference situations.

I like a bigger monitor for lighting and I feel like the 502 is a bit small for that and at least for me, the 502 + Sidewinder is a bit clunky for an EVF but I do like it better than the Sony EVF. 702 is a perfect size for on-camera monitor, but a bit big for EVF.

If my Sony EVF broke, I would probably get the 502 Sidewinder combo since it's $1400 vs $1800 for the Sony EVF (I believe that is the price reported by another user) and the Sidewinder can be used on many cameras.

Hi Ben (or anyone with a 702 Lite and a Odyssey 7Q)

Can you test something for me? I just got my 702 Lite and when I send a signal via SDI cable to my Odyssey 7Q, the 7Q image is really messed up. Lines going through it, terrible looking.

However, when I send the image out to my older SmallHD DP6, the image is perfect. I wish I had a 3rd monitor to test it on.

Ben, can you test to see what the image looks like when sending out from 702 Lite to your Odyssey 7Q? I'm wondering if I got a defective unit.

Thanks,

Gene

Update on this. I've realized each monitor has it's pluses and minus when working with various cameras and it's just a monitor thing. For example, on my 7Q, the HDMI In does not work with my FS7 or Red, but works perfect with my Canon 60D. On the 702 Lite, the HDMI can cross covert to SDI on the Red, but cannot cross convert from the FS7 (distorted image). 702 Lite SDI to the 7Q works when attached to the FS7 (I got it backwards in my initial post), but does not work when the signal source is the Red.

Seems like my HDMI out is broken on my FS7 because I cannot get a signal out all from it now.

However, I have the rig I need and worked around the compromises so it's all good.

Thanks Gene you confirmed my thoughts as far as size go. I prefer a 7" monitor in most situations where I don't have to be as light as possible but then I can use the Sony VF then.

Now I'm contemplating the 702 lite vs bright. That bright screen is so nice but I'm not convinced the mechanics would last to make the extra money investment into the 702 bright worth it as a long term purchase.

How are you guys finding the colour quality and brighttness of the 702 lite? Do you notice the lack of rec 709 colour coverage over the bright model?

I'm perfectly happy with the IQ on the Lite.

One other thing to consider (And this is pretty major), is the Lite's power consumption is between 5 to 7 watts (seems closer to 5w IMO) while the Bright is 11 watts. I used a medium sized Sony L-Series battery on the Lite and it lasted a really long time, way longer than my 7Q or my SmallHD DP6. The low power draw is a huge plus as my older DP6 seemed to eat batteries and it's a pain to change all the time. Also, the Lite is 7oz lighter vs Bright (Specs from B&H)

I ended up getting the Faux Dummy Battery which is convenient but super expensive at $139. The SmallHD Faux battery is kind of nice because you can swap out the cable since it has a DC input. I use a 3 foot for my Glidecam and a 1.5 foot for on camera.

Has anyone found a decently robust but small case for it?

I like my kit compact and to have the 702 fit inside my Thinktank Airport backpack. I ended up getting a neoprene iPad case which had a 5mm foam insert that came with it.

I ended up folding the foam inside in half, sandwiched the 702 between the form insert which is in a Zip Lock bag, then I put it inside the iPad case. Really compact and seem quite protective I have.

Pelican would be better, but way bulkier and an extra thing to carry.

Excellent. That's the sort of thing i've been looking for but wasn't sure if the extra thickness of the 702 compared to an ipad would a lot of them out or not. Thanks.

in the menu, verify you're VIDEO OUT settings - i think it's video out? idk, the output settings.

You'll see lots of selectable options that only output via the SDI and grey out the HDMI. I've had this issue and thought my HDMI port was malfunctioning too, simply to realize it was sending only out the SDI ports. Weird if you ask me, but that's sony right?
